The "Gray Cells" in LifeHistory Rule

Post by Extrementhusiast » May 3rd, 2010, 11:17 pm

As far as I know, the gray cells do not change, they do not influence birth, and they kill all of the eight cells surrounding them, unless the cell in question is also gray. This stuff is fun! Here is a H->G that only uses one gray cell:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 6, rule = LifeHistory
F3$.3C$2.C$2.3C!
You can also call them grey cells, it doesn't matter what the spelling is, as long as it's one of the two spellings mentioned.

This stuff is fun! Here is a H->G that only uses one gray cell:
You're not meant to use the grey cells! They're designed for demonstrational purposes, so that you can divide a pattern into non-interacting sections. By the way, the original term that Dave Greene coined was killer cell.

His original e-mail to Brice Due (which he later forwarded to me) contained the following mention of the extra LifeHistory states:
Along the same lines as the possible 'start' state for LifeHistory,
something I thought of at random this afternoon was another
easter-egg-type State #7 (6 if we're doing zero-based numbering): a
'killer' OFF state, good for drawing boundaries around subpatterns in
large stamp collections and making sure that none of the subpatterns
accidentally affect each other.

[This was always a problem with Herschel conduits in particular,
because of all the gliders they throw off. If you run a big conduit
stamp collection, you quickly end up with explosions here and there as
the conduit outputs leak into neighboring conduits and make a mess.

But if you add eaters to absorb all the extra gliders, they look just
the same as the eaters you really need as catalysts. So what's the
clearest way to mark the glider absorbers as optional? Could mark
those eaters with your 'start' state, I suppose. Or just show them as
"marked OFF", so the glider goes right through the eater but you can
see where to put one in if you need to... and then draw a killer
boundary around each conduit.

-- Might be worth adjusting gencols output matrices to include
boundary cells, too, to avoid similar interference on envelope-reading
expeditions.]

Guess I'll ask for advice from golly-test on this eventually. But
right now I'm fairly tempted to include the 'start' and 'killer'
states in Golly's official LifeHistory rule -- and then just not use
them for most patterns. If there aren't any state-5 or state-6 cells,
everything will behave just like five-state LifeHistory anyway -- just
as LifeHistory will behave like HistoricalLife if there aren't any
marked cells, even if you're copying and pasting between the two
rules.

I'm sorry, but I didn't know that I wasn't supposed to use them. They're still fun though when you use them in the wrong way! (I think you're being a bit too formal about this, calcyman.)

My apologies. But using grey cells as active components within your pattern will ruin its compatibility with ordinary Life.

I'm actually fine with that. Should I share more patterns?

Should I share more patterns?
That's completely your decision -- I was merely clarifying the intended purpose of the grey cells, but I suppose that you can use them however you want.

Failed Herschel conduit that lasts A REALLY LONG TIME and also produces an LWSS:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 17, rule = LifeHistory

I tend to use white cells to start off Herschel conduits. Some of the conduits have strange properties. One of them (top middle) is a 180-degree rotational conduit (no flip) that can handle two Herschels at once. Another one is a vertical Herschel flipper that only translates the Herschel vertically (making the rare case of a vertically symmetric Herschel-based multi-barreled gun instead of a rotationally symmetric Herschel-based multi-barreled gun). There is also a Herschel duplicator (pretty obvious, there are two red outlines of Herschels) which has one turned clockwise by 90 degrees and the other simply translated. There are two extensible Herschel conduits: one is at the bottom right, the other one is at the bottom left. The bottom left one transforms the Herschel into an HWSS, which then gets turned back into a Herschel. The bottom right conduit has single gray cells that flip and translate a gliderless Herschel repetitively. The last gray cell in that conduit is used to delete the first block that is naturally formed from a Herschel.

These grey cells also allow some very peculiar looking oscillators:

The bottom left one transforms the Herschel into an HWSS
How did you find that?! HWSSes are difficult to construct; do you think you can remove the killer cells from that pattern?

Actually, I found that one accidentally! :mrgreen: I was trying to make a Herschel conduit, when I noticed that an HWSS was given out, with some extra debris. Then I simply added a few gray cells to get rid of that debris. Voilá!

Prior to the postings of the other weird oscillators, these were two of the weirdest oscillators that I could find:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 8, rule = LifeHistory
4.AB$3.BC.A$3.A.CB$.F2.BA$F.B$.A2C$C3.C$2C.2C!

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
3.F$.AB$.BCA$C.B$2C.F!
The white cells are stator cells (cells that stay on all of the time)

I think many oscillators can and will be formed by surrounding an active pattern with gray cells.

This is an 'almost-oscillator' which has only one cell difference. Is there any way the bottom-right cell could be replaced to allow it to actually repeat?

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 8, rule = LifeHistory
2.3F$2.3B$F2BA2BF$FBABABF$FBABABF$F2B2ABF$2.4B$2.3F!
This tiny P2 fits in a 2x3 box (it's probably already known.

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 2, rule = LifeHistory
F2A$FBA!
Is anyone maintaining a pattern collection for this rule?

Currently, I am, but only for oscillators and conduits. I will probably expand it.

Here is a 90 degree stable reflector I found:

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 41, rule = LifeHistory
.A$2.A$3A24$27.A$25.A.A$26.2A2$24.2F9.F$21.F14.2F3$42.F$17.F20.2A$29.
F8.2A$28.F.F$41.F$34.F$22.F!
The recovery time is 102 tics, as demonstrated.
I am absolutely sure a better one can be found after making this.

Here... have some impossibly close blinkers:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = lifehistory
F3AF$A3.A$A.F.A$A3.A$F3AF!
You can also chain them together:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 5, rule = lifehistory
F3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF$A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A$A.F.A.F.A.F.A.F.A.F.A.F
.A.F.A$A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A$F3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF!
And it produces an interesting result when you destabilise one end:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 5, rule = lifehistory
F3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3A$A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A$A.F.A.F.A.F.A.F.A.F.A.F.
A.F.A$A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A$F3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3AF3A!

This stable 90 degree microreflector fits in a 12 x 15 bounding box:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 23, rule = LifeHistory
2.A$A.A$.2A6$16.F$14.F$19.F2$21.F$15.A$10.F2.A.A$14.2A4.2A$20.2A3$21.
F3$17.F!
It recovers in 52 tics, ready for another glider as shown.
It is an alien life form but it can be mixed with standard life patterns that don't use grey cells for testing and proof of concept.

I find these cells to be fascinating. A bit of tinkering around found me this:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
F7BF$.2B3A2B$2BA3BA2B$.B2AB2AB$F.5B.F!
This moves a house forward at 6c/17.
I also found a 90 degree turner:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 14, rule = LifeHistory
10.F$F.B.F2.B.3B$4B2.7BF$16B$15BFB$17B$15BFB$16B$4B.11B$F.B.F.F7BF$7.
2B3A2B$6.2BA3BA2B$7.B2AB2AB$6.F.5B.F!
Plus a duplicator:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 59, rule = LifeHistory
4.F7BF$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.9B$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.9B$5.7B$
4.F7BF$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.9B$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.9B$5.7B$
4.F7BF$5.8B$F.B.F9B$.13B$B2A12B$BABA10B$3BA9BF$BABA9B$B2A9B$.10BF$F.B
.F7B$5.F6B$5.6BF$5.8B$4.F.6BF$5.7B$4.9B$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.F.6BF$5.7B
$4.9B$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.F.5B.F$5.7B$4.9B$5.7B$4.F7BF$5.7B$4.F.5B.F$
5.7B$4.9B!
And a surprisingly simple Pi => glider:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 16, rule = LifeHistory
F.5B.F$.B2AB2AB$2BA3BA2B$.2B3A2B$F7BF$.7B$F.5B.F$.7B$9B$8B$7B.F$B3.B$
3.3B$3.B2AB$4.2A!
This uses just a block and 3 killer cells!

With these mechanisms, you can build what I like to call "Pi tracks".
Here's an example:

Code: Select all

x = 131, y = 138, rule = LifeHistory

Thsi is a large version of a p188 glider gun - I know it can be condensed.
If anyone has found any of this before, well, kudos to them.

And could any of these be condensed?

The pi to glider component can be done without the block:

Code: Select all

x = 81, y = 120, rule = LifeHistory

Single stage converters probably exist for all R, B, C, Pi, etc.
I don't think anyone has found all of them.

First question ever. Often referred to as The Question. When this question is asked in right place in right time, no one can lie. No one can abstain. But when The Question is asked, silence will fall. Silence must fall. The Question is: Doctor Who?

Using some of the many devices people have made so far, I decided to make a controlable gun. It's propbably not in any way optimal, but it's the most complicated thing I have ever constructed myself:

The main part is in the top-right corner. This is a reaction between a glider and a pi which results in nothing. However, if you remove one glider, the pi creates a block. The next glider is destroyed if the block is there, so the pi creates another block.
But, if you remove another glider, the next pi destroys the block instead.

With me so far? :)

Next, I had to find a way to non-destructively test for the block and coax out a glider. I used this reaction:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 4, rule = LifeHistory
2A3.A$2A3.3A$5.A.A$7.A!
If there is a block, the Herschel disappears. However, without the block, the Herschel emits a glider before being destroyed.

The rest of the machinery - nearer the middle - is used simply to get the glider stream out of the pattern.
(It also inverts the output, but that doesn't make much difference.)

To try it out, simply let the pattern run for a bit, then insert a block in marked ON state where the red block is. The pattern should start emitting gliders. Repeat, and the pattern shouuld stop.

Of course, you would normally trigger the reaction with an input glider, shown in red as well.

G -> B and B -> G combine to make reflector,
B -> 2G can be used to make splitter:

Code: Select all

x = 42, y = 20, rule = LifeHistory
35.F3$F29.F$3.D29.D$2.3D27.3D$2.D.2D26.D.2D3$11.F29.F3$F9.2A18.F9.2A$
10.2A28.2A3$11.F29.F$3A27.3A$2.A6.F22.A6.F$.A2.F26.A2.F!
Modified splitters used to make guns:

Code: Select all

x = 90, y = 32, rule = LifeHistory
7.F2.2A2.F$10.2A$16.F5$17.F4$2F8.F2$66.F2.2A2.F$69.2A$75.F4$77.F$16.A
4.F8.F50.F$14.A.A48.F$15.2A2$14.F54.F$33.F39.F7.A7.F$79.A.A$80.2A2$
15.F59.F$20.2A58.2A$17.F2.2A2.F52.F2.2A2.F!
The gun on the right is p128 but can be stretched to any period 128+8n, n=1,2,3...
The gun on the left can have multiple gliders in the loop to reduce the period of the gun.

Is this not the exact same type of "special" cells as the death-forcer "black holes" in EE's ExtendedLife rule, or is there some difference?
