I should have said "canonical form" -- the usual way of comparing one gun pattern to another, especially when the bounding box changes a lot.

B2n3/S23-qHistory was used above, because otherwise you can't see how much space each gun really takes up.

The rules for canonical gun form, dating from Jason Summers' gun collection way back when, are:

1) Height should be less than or equal to width.
2) Gliders should escape either from the bottom or from the right side of the gun.
3) If you run the pattern for one tick, an output glider should turn on a cell outside the bounding box.
4) No other sparks should be born outside the bounding box in any phase of the gun.

There's nothing that says the LeapLife gun collection has to follow those rules, but they do come in handy sometimes when you're comparing options.

This post lists only some of the possible ways to get a two-state copy. You might also like the LifeViewer methods -- but I see I've already told you about them.
In LifeViewer you can set the current drawing state to 2, then hit Ctrl+Alt+K to get rid of the state-2 cells. Then Ctrl+C gets a copy of the state-1 cells only, that can be pasted into a [LeapLife] universe...

This sounds like some kind of bug report, or maybe a call for help, but it's amazingly vague and mysterious. Are you asking me not to ever post patterns in B2n3/S23-qHistory?

I wanted either a separate label color, or I wanted to show the shape of the history cells, in the last three patterns I posted, so a History pattern seemed like the best way to communicate. But if the message doesn't get across to everybody for reasons that I don't understand, then I can pretty easily double-post every pattern in two-state and multistate. Seems like a lot of unnecessary clutter, though, so I'd like to understand the problem better.

1) "The image of the code" might mean a visual picture of the B2n3/S23-qHistory RLE. On your phone, LifeViewer should provide that. Does it not? On your computer, you won't see the picture correctly until you install the rule table that Hunting just reposted. Is that the only problem on your computer, or is something else going on?

"The file" could mean several things, but none of them make any sense yet.

2) When you Ctrl+C copy the B2n3/S23-qHistory rule table out of Hunting's post, then switch to Golly and type Ctrl+Shift+O, then Golly should install the rule for you. The rule will end up in C:\Users\{YourUserName}\AppData\Roaming\Golly\Rules\ if you're on Windows. 'AppData' is a hidden folder, so you can't see it, but you can type the path into File Explorer and it will take you there. But there's really no need to ever go look at that file once it's installed -- if Golly puts the rule table there, the rule should Just Work after that. You could move or copy it to your Rules folder, but there's no point really.

After you've installed the rule, when you Ctrl+C copy a B2n3/S23-qHistory pattern RLE to your computer's clipboard, then switch to Golly and type Ctrl+Shift+O, Golly should display the pattern. Does it not do that? What, specifically, does it do instead?

Okay, I've looked at it. Now please explain step by step exactly what you did to create that pattern. It looks like some kind of text file incorrectly interpreted as ASCII, and there are lots of ways for that to happen, and lots of text files that could produce that picture. I probably can't help with intense random biases (though I kind of share this one). You'll just have to wrestle with that on your own. Admittedly the AppData folder is an evil Windows feature, but Golly has to use the multi-user folders that Windows provides.

The multi-user functionality would allow different people to share the same computer, and have different versions of the same named rule installed in Golly without conflicting with each other. In the history of the world this has probably been useful approximately never. But there's also the possibility of different users wanting different Golly preferences, or different settings for helper scripts. That's probably never actually been used either, but at least it's theoretically possible that it might have come in handy once or twice.

Sure. But if there's a rule with a competing definition in the AppData rules folder, Golly will use that one first. Luckily there are very few cases of two different rule definitions with the same name, probably because people who do that tend to die young of extreme frustration, so generally this isn't a problem.

See Golly's documentation for the details, as usual. The links to "your rules folder" work if that HTML page is opened in Golly via Help > File Formats. It just opens File > Preferences > File tab.

Thanks for creating the LeapLife GitHub repository, by the way. We can start dumping all kinds of stuff in there that it would be awkward to try to keep in the first post of multiple LeapLife forum threads. Maybe just add a link to the repo in the first post in this thread?

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: No. You have to wait for more than 2 days before eventually, someone does something that is special in this rule. This is one of the many rules where there's not much things in it, just like CGoL but many people are interested in finding more and that's why Life had way more than this rule. People don't randomly just focus on LeapLife (you know).
