How can I convert the text in the rule table into a format that golly can read?
Copy the text into a file called circleoflife.table and then put that file in your local rules folder (which you can see/change at the bottom of Preferences > Control). It is NOT a good idea to put .table/tree/colors/icons files in Golly's Rules folder because those additions are likely to be lost if you update to a newer version of Golly.

Ok...I am embarrassed to say I don't know how to save it as a .table file.

put it in a .table file (just make a txt and change the extension) and put that into the rules folder.

Thanks!

EDIT: out of a random soup I found a pattern that grows quadratically. I didn't think it was a big deal so I didn't save it. But looking through the thread, I am not sure any others have been found :o . It basically looked like a pufer...but at regular intervals a "double puffer." It came out of a 20 by 20 random soup, but I have not seen anything else like it.

I did just find something mildly similar:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 20, rule = circleoflife
BC2.BA.A2C3B3.C$CA3.B2.C4.A2.BC2A$AB3.C3.A2.CB.B.B$2.C6.CA2.C.ABC2B$
4.4A3.2CBA.A.AC$2C.C2.B4.B5.A.B$2C.C4.BA5.CB2AB$C.C3.2A2C2.B.C.B2.C$
2.CB.BC2.BCA2.A2C$AC3.B.B2.BAB.A2.A.C$.A2.B4.C.B.C2BA2.B$7.BA4.AC.BC$
.2BC2B.C2.B.AB3.BC$.C.CAC2.CA.C.AC2.CA$A2.A.AC4.B.2A.A2.B$B.C4.2CAC.C
.A.B.2B$.2BAB2.C2A8.AB$2.CA2.2B2.A2B.2B.CBA$C2AB2C4A4.2ABCAB$.2C.AC2.
BAB2.B2.C2.B!
But this is very different from the first pattern I found, which released new puffers symmetrically at regular intervals.

I am really interested to see smaller versions of my true breeder (the one that I didn't save), and would like to see what the smallest pattern with quadratic growth is.

On a side note, here is a simple eater:

Code: Select all

x = 41, y = 11, rule = circleoflife
34.C$30.B.B3AB$32.C.C.C$2.B.B23.B.BABABABAB$B3.B25.C.C.C.C.C$2.B25.B.
BABABABABAB$32.C.C.C.C.C$30.B.BABA.ABA$34.C3.C$32.B2.A.A$36.C!

EDIT: I found something similar, that produces replicators at regular intervals, though it is NOT symmetrical:

Code: Select all

x = 603, y = 85, rule = circleoflife

you highlight all of the text, then copy and paste.

Whatever you do, DON'T USE "SELECT ALL"! That adds spaces to it that aren't necessary and makes it unreadable to Golly.

EDIT: oops, I read the wrong page.

137ben, save it as a text file in Golly 2.1/Rules, but change the .txt on the end to .table.

Also, I found a clean replicator breeder: (seems sawtooth-ish; demonstrates a Serpensinki triangle)

Alright, I know this is crazy sounding, but this ca is very, very similar to B017/S01. Look at this:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 9, rule = B017/S01
bo$bo4$o$2bo$2bo$o!
The only issue is that most other patterns don't work, so I think that there is either another condition we have to add, or this rule only works how it is presented. I'd like to see what we can come up with.

...What...

That makes no sense! How can the glider move at c/2 when its front doesn't oscillate?

Is this a strange Golly bug? :\

This is because the rule uses B0 without S8, which means that the entire universe essentially blinks. To speed up the program and avoid the annoying visual effects it would cause, Golly switches between two related cellular automata, which essentially has the effect of switching all of the states in the universe every generation.

The comparison to B017S1 is quite interesting. It shares the same 2-cell replicator, but B017S1 also contains a property similar to "day and night", that inverting a pattern does not change its behavior.

EDIT: actually, that seems to just be because GOLLY inverts the pattern on odd generations, and I see now that inverting changes the patterns behavior unless you also displace the generation counter by 1. So never mind my statement about day and night.

Anyways, in CoL, a straight line of cells of one color dies, unless they are mature, in which case the ends become small oscillators. In B017/S1, a line of on n cells becomes a replicator if n is even, but dies if n is odd, so they are different in that sense.

Also, random soups in b017/s1 stabilize, while in circleoflife they explode.

On second thought, the two rules aren't all that similar aside from the 2 cell replicator.

Early on, a solid p2 oscillator diamond forms, while rakes and replicators surround it. The diamond is not destroyed, it actually grows as the chaos around it "settles in" to the crystal structure.

In that soup is this glider eater consisting of a single blinker:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 4, rule = circleoflife

Here is a filter which allows every 10th glider while eating the others:

Code: Select all

x = 37, y = 25, rule = circleoflife

Neat, huh? From the center to the right is slightly over 3.5 times longer than to the left, I think.

Holy cow, that's amazing! Did you randomly find that, or did you make it by hand?
I saw the reaction that created the replicator and used two guns to make it. So I didn't find it in a soup. =D

A method for constructing oscillators, guns, AND double guns of arbitrarily high periods:

Code: Select all

x = 179, y = 42, rule = circleoflife
9$113.B2$113.B2$22.B.B105.B$100.B.B19.B.B$100.B3.B15.B3.B5.B$102.B19.
B2$49.B.B!
Remove one of the eaters to make it a gun.

Here is a pattern of with 1 that exhibits quadratic growth.

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 1, rule = circleoflife
2A2.2A2.2B2.2A2.2B2.2A!
It can be extended with different combinations of young and mature pairs, for a variety of interesting effects.

The minimal form is:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 1, rule = circleoflife
2A2.2B2.2A!

After some thought I realized that my replication breeder might produce strange results if the pattern the replicator creates is perturbed early on. I made another rake that threw a glider back into the breeder and found a spot where it didn't just make a mess. No only does it create a row of replicators that are out-of-phase with the rest, but they still interact with each other, in a strange way. It's clear that what's represented isn't just a Sierpinski triangle– It's a 1D cellular automaton which I'm playing with here. I clearly made the pattern asymmetrical, yet a Sierpinski triangle is still created. Let it go for a few thousand generations and look inside– You can see the out-of-phase replicators, the fractal triangle, and the asymmetry of the pattern.

Code: Select all

x = 111, y = 85, rule = circleoflife
106.B$100.B5.B$104.B3$98.B.B.B.B.B2$110.B$110.B3$110.B$110.B2$98.B.B.

27.B.B.B.B.B2$39.B$39.B3$39.B$39.B2$27.B.B.B.B.B3$33.B$29.B5.B$35.B2$
25.B$27.B$23.B3.B17$41.B$5.B17.B3.B5.B5.B$23.B15.B.B3.B.B$5.B8.B10.B
19.B.B$16.B$8.B.B$12.B27.B.B.B.B$4.B.B23.B.B7.B5.B$B17.B11.B.B9.B.B$
6.B$8.B.B3.B.B!
It is possible that all configurations of this pattern's replicators produce these fractals.

(I like this rule.)

You save the rule table with notepad as a .tree (it might try to save it as .tree.txt; if it does remove it afterwards) and put it in the Golly Rules folder. Oh, and restart Golly. Then copying and pasting these patterns will work.

This is why you don't use Notepad.

This is why signature character limits are pointless.

I think the 1d rule in question is W22, which gives Sierpinski triangle from a single cell. Large asymettric debris can also release similar patterns to your newest result with CoL.
