tempest (0345/2/6)

Post by SquishyBoi » September 11th, 2020, 8:13 pm

hi hi
so i decided to finally start searching for multi-state rules and i came across this simple rulestring, 0345/2/6

"wow that's cool"
- no one

i called it tempest because 1) the spaceships look like violent gusts of wind to my peanut-sized brain, and 2) tempest is an underrated word and is used not nearly as much as it should

play around in here

Code: Select all

x = 1 y = 1 rule = 0345/2/6
!

-------------------------------------------------------------

oscillators

the only interesting oscillator that comes to mind is this extendable p84 "lattice"

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 27, rule = 0345/26/6
A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A2$26.A2$A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A2$22.A3.A2$A3.A3.A3.A3.A2$
18.A3.A3.A2$A3.A3.A3.A2$14.A3.A3.A3.A2$A3.A3.A2$10.A3.A3.A3.A3.A2$A3.
A2$6.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A2$A2$2.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A3.A!
but there's also this incredibly common p12 oscillator (call it the waterwheel for convenience) that can also be extended into a signal transmitter

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = 0345/26/6
.CBA$D.A$E3A$2.A!

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 7, rule = 0345/26/6
2.EDCBA$.A2.A2.A2.A$12A$.A2.A2.A2.A$.A2.A2.A2.A$12A$.A2.A2.A2.A!

Code: Select all

2.EDCBA$.A2.A2.A$9A$.A2.A2.A$.A2.A2.A$9A$.A2.A2.A$.A2.A2.A$9A$.A2.A2.
A!

guns go pewpew

1. a p20 proton gun made from a sort of p20 that shoots two at a time
2. the "double" p20 proton gun
3. a double-barreled p12 that resembles a wave machine

Code: Select all

$26.2D$26.2E!
5. a double-barreled p60 made from the aforementioned p12 guns
6. a double-barreled p57 made from the aforementioned p19 guns, that emits c/2 spaceships, which are substantially slow compared to all the other spaceships in this rule. might as well call it the "snail"
7. if we then combine two p57 snail guns (along with eaters on each side), we get this delightful p171 that emits 2c/3 "phoenix". the phoenix is a lot faster than the snail, yet far from reaching the proton's speed

Code: Select all

x = 77, y = 19, rule = 0345/26/6
48.C.AC17.CA.C$48.D2AD17.D2AD$48.B2A19.2AB$48.E.BE6.A3.A6.EB.E2$45.A29.

ok that's enough

blinkerer and some rad spaceships

if any of you are hardcore veterans to the forums (i'm talking 2012 or earlier), or you're just someone who reads every single thread on this site for entertainment, you're likely to know who the user "blinkerer" was. his last post was on october of 2012, where he discovered some neat spaceships, along with some other patterns as well in the Transers II rule. but then i noticed that Transers II (along with Transers I and III) was incredibly similar to Tempest (0345/26/6 compared to 0345/2/6)

because of their similarities, a few of blinkerer's discoveries are actually compatiable here

here's a siderake and two other spaceships (i'll just call them the c/10 chicken and the c/36 tarantula)

Code: Select all

x = 71, y = 18, rule = 0345/2/6

and finally, a sawtooth for the rule

AB.BA$3.A!

-------------------------------------------------------------

reflector and stuff to do

to finally end this stupidly long post, here's a simple 90 degree proton reflector, that can be reused, although it changes position

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 8, rule = 0345/26/6
2.A6$2A$2B!
- find some more interesting oscillators
- perhaps a gun that combines p171 guns?
- make a spaceship out of the extender
- logic gates?
- take a nap

i looked if anyone on the forums had anything closely related to the rule, and i only found transers. what a valuable lesson: when you come with a rule, search the entire goddamn forums for anything that even resembles it

well at least it's not too bad

Assume good faith before accusing others. It is very common to rediscover outer-totalistic rules and 345 (three consecutive numbers) plus 0 (for a dot) looks reasonable to me. It's also possible to find it by brute-forcing.

For instance, I found 124/3/3 by brute forcing. A quick forum search turns out it was discovered 8 years ago, and probably way earlier anyway...

Also, the sawtooth is not a real sawtooth because the spaceships emitted prevents it from returning to the original pop, but pairing it rescues it anyway:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 22, rule = 0345/2/6

He didn't mention whippy dippy in the ice-cream truck, which contains his mediocre CAs, so he did not claim whippy dippy is his rule. (Otherwise, you may also accuse A for Awesome for claiming B38/S23 is his CA, but he didn't. He just created the thread.)

i don't really know what to say, since there's no viable evidence that i "looked for the rule"
and if that's not enough, think of this as a kind of "six-generation" version of 0345/2/10, because if you've seen the "transers trilogy" (as i like to refer to it as), there are completely different patterns for simple changes to the generation number

interesting stuff, here's some other things i'd like to add

a simple p5 proton gun that's related to the one in tempest

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 6, rule = StarWarsVariant
.AB.CB$2.3A.A$.2A.2A$D.3A$.B.A.D$2.2AB!
an asymmetrical p15 oscillator

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 18, rule = StarWarsVariant

rad little wickstretcher in action

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 86, rule = StarWarsVariant

and this simple backrake, which can also be turned into a pseudo-wickstretcher by adding an eater onto the end

Code: Select all

anyway what's a thread without updates :D

here's a double-barreled snail gun (i'll just call it the honeycomb)

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 20, rule = 0345/2/6
4.A.A$4.BAB$3.CDADC$2.CB.A.BC$2.ED3ADE$2.2A.A.2A$.B.BE.EB.B$C.A.A.A.A

this cocoon thing that's related to the honeycomb

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 26, rule = 0345/2/10

5.A!
a double-barreled "wave machine" gun

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 12, rule = 0345/2/6
2.A$.ACA$.ECE$2.A$5A$.A.A$.A.A$5A$2.A$.ECE$.ACA$2.A!
the "cross" still life that is used to transmit signals can also be used as a proton eater, which makes this extensible p6 oscillator. this also proves that the p12 and p19 proton guns can also be used to make extensible p12 and p19 oscillators

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 23, rule = 0345/26/6
.E.BD$D.2AE$C3AB$B.A.A$.A$2.2E$2.2D$2.2C$2.2B$2.2A2$2.2E$2.2D$2.2C$2.

weird breeder:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 7, rule = 0345/26/6
E$3.2A$2.2ABA$2.BEBE.A.A$2.2D.C2AB2A$3.A.BDAB2A$3.DEBC.A!
And a interesting reaction:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = 0345/26/6
3.A2$6.A$CBA$CBA!

Not inactive any more! :D

StarWarsVariant supports the extensible guns by Stephen Silver here:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3576

Guns with periods >4 can easily be constructed. The first three:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 82, rule = StarWarsVariant
