Life on the Slope

Post by Extrementhusiast » October 15th, 2010, 11:14 pm

This thread is for the rule "Life on the Slope". ("Life on the Edge" is actually identical to this rule in overall behavior, but I find this rule easier to work with.) Here is a collection of various things, most of them spaceships:

Code: Select all

x = 730, y = 494, rule = LifeOnTheSlope

A GUN!

Code: Select all

x = 41, y = 19, rule = LifeOnTheSlope

30.A2.B2$31.BA$28.BAB2.ABA!
Yes, it did have to do with the p39 oscillator. Another copy of the p39 oscillator can eat this glider stream; I leave it to the reader to figure out. I wonder if there are any stable eaters, like in the original Life...

Wow, a gun really is possible!

About the eater stream, here's a spoiler...

2.ABA!
My solution may be different from yours.

One thing I don't get about this rule– There's two states and they have the same color. I don't get how this rule works in general.
Using logic I figured out how to rotate a pattern 90 degrees– rotate it and switch states 1 and 2.

Turns out there IS an eater! Check this out:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 12, rule = LifeOnTheSlope

Wow :D

Next:
can we create oscillators of arbitrarily high periods?
can we find a stable glider reflector (and create oscillators of ALL arbitrarily high periods)?
can we create SPACESHIPS of arbitrarily high periods?

Well, I do know that you can create arbitrarily large oscillators:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 18, rule = LifeOnTheSlope
3.A.A.A.A.A.A.A$.B$17.A$A$17.A$A$17.A$A$17.A$A$17.A$A$17.A$A$17.A$A$

Be careful not to create illegal patterns, such as that eater. The state of a live cell should be determined by the parity of its location; otherwise it is not a valid pattern in the original Life on the Edge rule.

And oscillators of arbitrarily large periods can be created, assuming we have an annihilation collision between two perpendicular gliders. Then, a loop comprising four guns would facilitate all periods 39n.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Cool gun! And I look forward to seeing your collection Wojowu.

I have some unrelated questions (for everyone): Life On The Slope uses a particular neighborhood as well as a particular rule. Has anyone tried different rules in the same neighborhood?

I assume that, at the very least, the author of the Life On The Edge ( Franklin T. Adams-Watters) did indeed try out different rules, but I can't find any mention of it. The only reference to either rule that I've found that didn't lead back to Golly or to the Ruletable Repository is this one:

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.the ... 0c81905af1

Is there anything else to read about the rules or the neighborhood, besides what can be found on this forum?

Here is a (somewhat rare) tagalong.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = LifeOnTheSlope

The tagalong is very common in random "explosion". Here are few I've found in 1 min. looking for them:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 28, rule = LifeOnTheSlope
ABA.AB$B.BA2.B$.BA3.A$.A$.BA2$12.AB$14.B$14.A$10.BA$9.BA$9.A.A$9.BA$
5.AB12.AB$4.A.A.AB11.B$8.B.B10.A$A8.BA6.BA$.A14.BA$16.A.A$16.BA9.AB$
29.B$29.A2$26.BABA$28.A.A$28.B.B$26.AB.BA$26.BA!
And here is my way to stabilize 7 cell spaceship:

Code: Select all

x = 42, y = 46, rule = LifeOnTheSlope
9$12.AB4.AB8.B$12.B.B9.AB2.A$10.ABA2.B.B6.B2.A$10.B2.A.AB9.A$11.B2.A
6.B3.A$12.BA.A.AB2.A.BA$13.B4.AB.B$12.B2.A.AB.BA$10.A4.BABAB$10.B5.B.
B2.AB$17.B5.B$14.BABA.A6.B$19.B3.B$15.B4.B.B$11.AB2.A11.B$11.B2.A$13.
A7.B11.B$12.A11.B4.AB2.A$10.BA16.A3.A$27.A3.A$27.B2.A$29.A$28.A$26.BA!
Anyway this rule is pretty unpleasant for computational and other models, because colliding two gliders doesn't yield a nice variety of results. Also it's very explosive...

Here's a triple rake:

So I noticed that this guy popped out of a soup. It looks like it could be stabilised into a smoky ship or puffer. Not that I have the patience to do that :p

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 13, rule = LifeOnTheSlope
