About a year ago, I found an outer-totalistic rule which features large, chaotic, asymmetric explosions. This rule has the added quirk that these completely chaotic explosions can be made to break down completely upon certain interactions with outside junk. I didn't pay too much attention to this rule at first, but a lot of people said it answered an old conjecture regarding explosive patterns in otherwise non-explosive rules, meaning that there's definitely some significance regarding this behaviour.
Using the following lifeviewer demos, such an explosion can be initiated from within the pattern via adding a single cell - in this case, at position (5, 0). Note how the generation in which the cell is added matters (the first stops the explosion, the second does not) - this is very likely due to the nature of the "checkerboard" neighbourhood, which effectively alternates every two generations:

Such behaviour has been known previously in non-totalistic rules in which patterns of a higher symmetry explode, but rapidly stabilise if an element of asymmetry is introduced.
