Merrylife ( B3-eq4ciqt5ky/S2-c3-k4yz5i8 ) is a rule I’ve been researching since around august 23rd, and so far I’ve only posted about it on the discord server, but now I have so much known tech that it could actually warrant making a whole new thread on the forums for it, so here it is, a whole new thread. The rule is named after the common sparky p50 oscillator in it, which is the basis of most tech in the rule, named the merry:

the oblique signal is already known and documented on the conwaylife Discord, it was among the tech that was left out of the first post due to not being as relevant since there aren't any known uses for the weak "spark" at the end. that being said though, the reaction with a ship is new, and may give the block signal more potential applications

sorry for the double post, but it's been 4 days, and yesterday we finished a 12 glider construction operation which fires a loafship forward and with enough clearance to hit it with a glider. by rewinding the highlighted glider in this demonstration, you can control the distance in which a tship is fired. coupled with another reaction of a glider and loafship that makes a 2 block + blinker constellation or block+blinker+glider constellation, it should hopefully be enough to make two arm universal construction with no more than 6 operations (trigger arm 1, trigger arm 2, fire arm 1, fire arm 2, and potentially up to two other fire operations for arm 2)

also, what should the loafship operation be named? i dont know of any existing terms for it in other fields of tech, or even any cases in which a method similar to this firing at a certain distance from the arm has been attested before. current name ideas are prong operation, pushprong operation, leader operation, or timed push operation.

The "3 phases delayer" actually delays the ship by 4 generations but advances it by 2 cells. If you apply it twice it will advance the ship by 2 generations{a}.

Here is what I did:
  • First, I advanced the ship-2-gliders reflector until it showed the same phase as the reflector, then I removed the 90° reflector and pasted the duplicator so that the ships lined up.
  • Then, I advanced this device by 2 generations, selected it and a glider and reflected it diagonally, then reset and pasted this pattern over the glider{b}.
  • At this point I ran the pattern 168 generations, which moved some of the gliders and ships but kept others the same, and I added those new ships in.
  • I then copied the glider-ship converter, reflected and advanced it, and pasted it over the new glider.
  • The t ship it produced was not aligned with the duplicator below, so I moved it back 21 cells, then another 21 cells, at which point the ship was to the right of where it should be{c}.
  • By running the pattern, leaving my mouse over the middle cell of that ship, and resetting and counting the distance, I could see that it was 11 cells to the right of where it needed to be{d}.
  • I ran the converter and glider 4*11=44 generations. The glider was still alive, so I copied that, reset, and pasted it over the same glider.
  • The t ship reached the correct spot, but after 358 generations, as confirmed by selecting it in generation 0 and running the pattern until a ship reached that same phase near the box. 358 is 22+8*42.
  • In order to make that 358 into a multiple of 42, it was necessary to determine how to adjust the triangle. The reflector and duplicator could only be shifted along their diagonals, and they had to be shifted by the same amount, or the 4c/10 ship would not be in the same column. Also, the distance between the reflector and duplicator could only change by a multiple of 4. This meant that the triangle could be adjusted by shifting the reflector and duplicator by 2 cells along their diagonals. This basic unit took 2*4=8 generations longer to reach the reflector, 4*10/4=10 generations longer to reach the duplicator, and 2*4=8 generations to reach the spot where the unshifted reflector would have put it, for a total of 8+10+8=26 generations.
  • To find the right number, I added 26 to 22 until it was a multiple of 42. 22+4*26=126=3*42. This corresponds to moving the reflector and duplicator back 4*2=8 cells.
  • Moving the duplicator back 8 cells was easier because I could just run it 8*4=32 generations, which would move the glider out 8 cells, then copy it and the glider, then paste that pattern so the gliders line up. To move the reflector back 8 cells, I had to run the pattern 168-32=136 generations and do the same thing. (168 is the gap between gliders from the original triangle gun, and there was no reason to preserve this particular number)
  • At this point, it worked except some gliders were crashing into each other. I removed all gliders except one to find the period, which was 1092. Fortunately, this is not a multiple of 168 so I didn't have to adjust the gun again because the loop can only handle 2 gliders at a reduced period.

{b}: In 2 generations, a glider flips itself across the diagonal, so if you reflect the entire pattern across the diagonal, you get the glider in the same phase, but the thing the glider hits has been reflected. You can reflect diagonally by performing a rotation and a reflection. Try it!
{c}: It's easier to move a device in than it is to move it out. Also, I could move it 21 cells instead of 42 cells because a glider is c/4, so would get there in 4*21=2*42 generations.
{d}: I didn't actually count it, but used the selection tool to mark a 1*1 selection over that square. Then, I made the other end of the selection the middle cell of the original ship. The length of the selection was 12 cells, so the distance is 12-1=11 cells. Alternatively, you can select the cell 1 cell to the right and not subtract. (If the original selection is on the left, you would want to select the cell just to the left instead) Instead of dragging the selection, you can release the mouse and shift-click over the other spot to expand your selection.

I made a mistake and thought the original triangle didn't work due to parity, but it does. The t ship was simply 2 cells off, which was fixable with the shifter. Then, it can be adjusted by moving the glider-ship converter and other reflector 4 cells, which changes the period by 36. Pulling it in 4 cells on both sides makes the period a multiple of 42.
Any sufficiently advanced software is indistinguishable from malice.

First dealing with the possible phases and positions for the 4c/10 makes adjustments difficult, so I connected two converters in a way that one input gliders produces one output glider in the other direction.

I extended the glider streams so that there were three gliders going in and three gliders going out. Then, I copied the entire pattern on the first generation, rotated it 180 degrees, and placed it in a way that lined up one of the glider streams with a stream from the original pattern.

Finally, I moved the reflectors closer together, rephasing them as I went, until both glider streams lined up.
