Finally straying away from the rule tables, here is a Generations rule that bears a striking resemblance to Life in terms of the end product. There are two main things commonly found in the results. A 5c/12 (!) spaceship:

A p20 oscillator:

x = 4, y = 4, rule = 23568/357/4
.2A$A.2A$.A.A$2.A!
Both have predecessors that are entirely composed of state 1 cells and have a population of under 10. (For the oscillator, the "predecessor" isn't really a predecessor, but an actual state of the oscillator.)

Interesting...
I found the origin of that common ship:

x = 4, y = 26, rule = 23568/357/4
.2A$.2A$.2A9$.2A$.3A$.2A10$2.A$2A$2.A!

the first is a common short methuselah, the second is the same, but with symmetry blocked, and the third is a precursor
