What is the pattern in the lifewiki logo?

Post by drc » July 13th, 2016, 1:06 am

Title. I'm just wondering if it's just random soup.

Nope, not a random soup! Rather than spoil the fun, does anyone recognize it/have any guesses?

Is it a certain generation of a certain pattern?

And is it 100% accurate?

Yep, it is (part of) a particular generation of a pattern that has a page on LifeWiki. And it is 100% accurate.

I think I have it, but the bit near the top of the image is kind of distorted, so I can't tell if there are cells there or if it's just that famous checkerboard shadow illusion coming into play.

I don't have access to Golly right now, but I think it's either gen 17 or 25 of the R-pentomino. I'm not sure what the domino spark in the upper left is about, though.

It's actually a block (squint really closely -- you're probably just seeing the right 2 cells in the block).

I thought it was meant to be gen 21

Maybe. I probably miscounted.

You're on the right track with the R-pentomino, but it's a larger pattern that uses an R-pentomino in a reaction (and might be too tough to guess honestly, since the only other clues are the block at the top-left and a few other cells that are wrong at the top-right).

Found it :D

Rather than give it away, I'll say if you load the pattern from its page, the lifewiki logo is gen 20.

Another hint, if you put all the visible cells from the logo into golly, a nice pattern shows up to the left 7 gens later which gives a clue to the pattern's name.
Physics: sophistication from simplicity.

Found it!

And here's a segment of the pattern as a hint:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
11bo$10bobo$11bo$2o9bo$2o9bob2o$10b2o4b4o$6b2o3bo8bo$7b2o2bo6b2o$4b2ob
o3bo3bo$4bo6bo$4bobo$5b2o4bobo$12bo!
Also a hint (but not the actual pattern).

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 6, rule = B36/S23
2b3o$bo2bo$o3bo$o2bo$3o$9b3o!

No, the pattern's name (at least the name of the article) doesn't. I don't know if the reaction has a name of its own that I never heard of which is different from the name of the pattern, though.

Found it thanks to this. Good one!
