EDIT by dvgrn: The message below refers to a joke Hitler birthday message, which has now been deleted.

This is really not funny.

EDIT: Sorry for being so rude, but please understand that he was an evil man who seized absolute power in order to enact a terrifying repressive state rivalling Stalinist Russia in brutality, and also directly caused the death of about 30 million people in Eastern Europe, as well as made many more people suffer. I know that you were joking and you probably didn't mean any harm (I know Hitler isn't seen as so bad in some other countries), but you really shouldn't make a joke like that about someone like him.

Sigh... I was hoping that the deleted post would send a clear enough signal that topics like celebrating Hitler's birthday are really, really unwelcome around here. But let me be more clear.

@BTS-fan, I won't delete this latest post, but have a good look at it. Your post doesn't say that you, or anyone at the party, supported Hitler's actual actions. But still, the post got reported.

Now, I really don't enjoy dealing with post reports on silly posts in the Sandbox, and it seems unlikely that other forum moderators do either.

Please understand that the absolute easiest way for me to avoid having to deal with any similar post reports in the future, is to put a permanent ban on your account.

I understand that there are places where a mention of Hitler doesn't receive this kind of visceral negative reaction. It's a big world, and not everybody gets told about all the same pieces of history in their classes. See this BBC article for example.

However, here on the forums there's a definite expectation that you have to be able to learn from your mistakes. This latest post of yours doesn't show any sign that you're making any effort to do that.

So this is your official notice: one more post from you that's reported for similar reasons will most likely result in a permanent ban, with no further warnings.

dvgrn, I think these posts just mean that your post is slightly ridiculous. These are two very serious posts. Why would they really quote this if they think it’s true and not just quoting a random post saying the RTC is down to 16 gliders?
Also very strong evidence that they are alts or they use each other as alts.

Anyways

EDIT by dvgrn (unless it's JP21 pretending to be dvgrn again, who really knows at this point?) replaced rule-2 word with a link just to keep some well-meaning busybody from reporting this post so that then we could go round and round again a few more times on this silly moderation merry-go-round. Apologies to anyone who might be offended by this edit, especially either JP21 or dvgrn, whoever didn't actually make the edit.

...
(The context is a remark that says sixteen copies of the CGoL textbook, whose front cover depicts a large glider, can be arranged in accordance with the 16G reverse caber tosser design so as to produce a "real-life" pattern construction.) Thank you for posint this in a different, less serious thread so that I can ask the following question:

Are all of the sixteen gliders in the recent RCT mechanism in the same phase (up to rotation) as that on the book cover? Reflection is not allowed due to the lack of mirrors in a RCT and the CP violation.

By the way, your quote is already included in some previous posts in this thread. New material:

HactarCE wrote:Anyone who's ever made almost anything in a CA circuit rule has suffered the tyranny of timing. If your gate inputs aren't perfectly timed, they'll flat-out fail, often silently.
Timing is not a tyranny. Indeed, the Moore neighbourhood provides a way out of this problem – it is exploited by Wireworld and Wireworld Modern to the limit in order to synchronise the signals.

A desire to have no timing concerns at all only makes larger patterns run slower (because of the variability in when gates are triggered, confusing Hashlife) and tougher to construct (because when signals bunch up, you don't know if a moving signal coming in from the side will hit the desired signal or not). The rules that realise this desire are more like marble machines than electronic computers.

As well as that, all "classical" cellular automata (i.e. as von Neumann created them in the 1940s) by definition run on a discrete clock.

Darn, you're right of course. I'll have to send my different books to the different start locations in different spaceships on different relativistic paths, such that time dilation comes into play. Fun detail: every million years (from the book's reference timeframe) the book cover glider spontaneously evolves to the next glider phase. It cost an extra $1.37 for Lulu to add that feature, but they assured me that it's been implemented for all Lulu books printed after February. Not the Amazon / Barnes&Noble ones of course -- I couldn't get them to promise me anything.

... If that doesn't seem sufficiently plausible, then once I get to the book-placement stage, a little work with some glue and an Xacto knife can easily produce book covers with the correct glider phases.

Also, I'm planning to build a LifeViewer structure along these lines in the next couple of weeks, but probably quite a bit bigger, as kind of a sidebar for a 50th-anniversary-of-Life article that's coming out in the New York Times. If I put in a LifeViewer label giving attribution -- "Otismo's Cyclotronic Park", maybe -- would it be okay if I hung up this artwork of yours somewhere in the larger gallery?
Here is a way to make the Simkin glider gun single-barrelled that some people might find interesting. (I certainly find it interesting.)

Code: Select all

x = 83, y = 75, rule = B3/S23

Here are the attributions. I don't think that I missed any particular thing, but there are many different attributions to make, so there would be many opportunities to miss something.
  • The idea of cancelling out an extra gun lane with gliders from a gun of a different period and using an eater 5 to prevent the collision point from shifting into one of the guns was conceived (probably independently) by MathAndCode, loosely inspired by a pattern by Entity Valkyrie 2.
  • The double-barrelled p120 gun uses a loop made of two of the same conduit found by Michael Simkin using CatForce, which was written by Michael Simkin. The first mention of using it to make a gun appears to be by Scorbie, although said post specifically mentions that Simkin would have thought of that. The first Herschel conduit (and therefore probably the idea of Herschel conduits, although I don't know for sure), the first usage of a block as a transparent catalyst, the first usage of a block as a nontransparent catalyst, and the idea of chaining Herschel conduits to make a gun are all by David Buckingham (R64 and the associated p256 gun).
  • The original version of single-barrelled p36 gun was found by Jason Summers, with improvements later made by Adam P. Goucher and Scot Ellison. It uses a p36 oscillator that he discovered, which includes caterers, which were discovered by Dean Hickerson, or jams, which were discovered by Achim Flammenkamp, and fishhooks, whose existence and usefulness as catalysts were discovered by Bill Gosper, (Also, the honey farm was discovered by the JHC group, which was led by John Conway.) and a heavyweight emulator variant found by Scot Ellison, where the original concept of emulating the sparks of XWSSes (which were discovered by John Conway as part of the JHC group, which he led), was realized by Robert Wainwright.
  • LifeWiki lists the discoverer of the eater 5 as unknown, but of its components, the tub with tail was discovered by Charles Corderman and Hugh Thompson, and the block was discovered by John Conway as part of the JHC group, which he led.
  • The glider was discovered by Richard Guy as part of the JHC group, which was led by John Conway. Guns were proven to be possible in B3S23 by Bill Gosper.
  • The original concept of cellular autonoma was created by John von Neumann. The fact that B3S23 is an interesting cellular autonomon was discovered by John Conway.
  • I found the concept of the greatest common divisor (also known as the greatest common factor) helpful in choosing a single-barrelled gun that would minimize the chance of a glider collision destroying the eater 5 before it could disappear completely. This concept was (independently) conceived by the ancient Greeks. I was able to find the greatest common divisor of 120 and 36 quickly due to my usage of Hindu-Arabic numerals, which were invented by Indian mathematicians, with the invention of zero by Brahmagupta being essential to the creation of a place-value number system. Arab merchants, European mathematicians, and my preschool and elementary school teachers are also responsible for the fact that I know about and use Hindu-Arabic numerals.
  • The fact that I know about all of the patterns that I used is due to LifeWiki and its various contributors. LifeWiki's sorted compilation of the two-glider collisions was originally created by Jason Summers. The fact that I was able to closely view, manipulate, and combine patterns is due to Chris Rowett's creation of LifeViewer. The fact that I know about Conway's Game of Life is due to Wikipedia and its various contributors. The fact that I am able to access these is due to the fact that I have a computer. My particular computer is due to Apple and Intel. Many of the discoveries made by other people were likely also made with the help of computers, and while I cannot be certain of the exact companies that were responsible for their computers, notable computer companies besides Apple and Intel include Microsoft and IBM. The first computer was made by Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace, the latter of whom wrote the world's first computer program. Computers today can be so powerful is because of the invention of the integrated transistor, which was due to Jack Kilby, Kurt Lehovec, and Robert Noyce based on ideas by Werner Jacobi and Geoffrey Dummer. Also necessary for me to access LifeWiki, LifeViewer, and Wikipedia was the invention of the Internet by Bell Labs.

hello,everyoneDo Stephen Wolfram and Gerard 't Hooft propose that literally every Cellular Automata is a universe? Both Stephen Wolfram and nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft think that the universe is a Cellular Automata. As far as I know, 't Hooft developped a series of frameworks to build different models of Cellular Automata and Wolfram also proposed a framework where network nodes could produce different Cellular Automata universes. Both of them proposed specific models of Cellular Automata to describe our universe (or rather they are working in a Cellular Automata description that can be applied entirely to our universe), but since they proposed a framework to create different Cellular Automata models, this makes me think that these authors think that literally every type of Cellular Automata correspond to a universe So, does anyone here know of this is correct? Does anyone here know these works well enough to tell me if these physicists think that every Cellular Automata model corresponds to a universe?thx

Here's some of the specially used thread and their function, for everyone, I guess:

Very OCA related Q&A
Thread For Your Unrecognised CA (TFYOCA for short):
Unrecognised, or basically just new rules go here
Usually you post new rules before you make a thread. This is for less new topics. You can see how people react to your new rules or someone might corderize something, etc. Usually don't make too many posts on just a single rule in that thread (don't be more than a page, but I've somehow done that twice :? ), if you have a lot it should deserve a thread (not always).
Miscellaneous Discoveries in Other Cellular Automata (MDIOCA for short):
Miscellaneous Discoveries in Other Cellular Automata. Also not so notable discoveries in very old threads, that is to avoid necroposting (like bumping a thread after a long time, like half a year).
Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds (5s) Project:
yes it's just what its title is.
Smallest Oscillators Supporting Specific Periods:
.
Miscellaneous Spaceship (collections) in Other Cellular Automata:
MDIOCA, except it's just for dumping ship collections[s], or iNoMed's (former) hobby[/s].
Spaceships in Life-like cellular automata:
New spaceships or smaller than the record spaceships in OT rules. OT rules only.
Oscillators in Life-like cellular automata:
Same description as above except spaceships are replaced with oscillators.
Rules 1 transition from Life:
Only for discoveries in rules 1 transition from CGOL. You can treat it as a thread for a specific rule, kind of.
Rules 2 transitions from Life:
Similar to the above, only difference is also the only difference in the title.
Close life variants:
Sort of overlaps with the above two threads.
Rules 1 MAP transition away from Life:
...
Truly Bilateral Life-Like rules:
...
Outer-totalistic hexagonal rules with spaceships:
Same as Spaceships in Life-like cellular automata thread, except it's hexagonal.
Soup search results in rules other than Conway's Life:
Soup search results in rules other than Conway's Life. For soup searchers, well only LP03 (or sometimes yujh) post in that.
Triangular neighbourhood rules:

Rules with interesting replicators:
For interesting replicators. Doesn't mean looks interesting, but has very unique properties, like these. GUYTU6J and wwei has a ton of very interesting replicators.
Rules with interesting dynamics:
Rules with interesting dynamics. Like Fuzy and Cloudsdale styled rules. whatever. Or like rules where there's a simple agar and there are some dynamics in the agars, like ships that rules in the agars.

You can see how people react to your new rules or someone might corderize something, etc. Usually don't make too many posts on just a single rule in that thread (don't be more than a page, but I've somehow done that twice :? ), if you have a lot it should deserve a thread (not always).

Based on that posting. I created an SQLite database from it, so it could be searched for things like this, but made no attempt at checking for duplicates or other cleanup. Not familiar with SJK format.

It turns out that paulrw63 or MadMan was not only concerned about his paper collection and pattern names.

Theoretically, gliders can build any oscillator,spaceship, puffer... BUT I've seen some P2 oscillators that do not seem to be constructible by gliders.

对牛弹琴

Pronounced "duì niú tán qín", a famous Chinese idiom that roughly translates to "mooing at a piano player" (at least this is how my bovine friends explained it to me).
To be more accurate, it means "playing an instrument for a cow to hear" -- obviously a cow will never visibly appreciate your music, so your efforts are fruitless.
“ 对 牛 弹 琴”
the first character means "to(do sth for sb.)"
the second one means cow
the third one means to play (an instrument)
the last one is an instrument.

I keep finding only 85. Here are the counts I get for each stage. Please correct me if I'm wrong:
11 = 4 + 3 + 4: block-on-cover, barge, block-on-cover
12 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3: boat, boat, ship, ship
10 = 3 + 3 + 4: boat, boat, 2 eaters
12 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3: beehive, beehive, tub, tub
40 = 8 + 32: 4 beehives, final activation
85 = 11 + 12 + 10 + 12 + 40
Heh, you must be wrong. I count gliders by the infallible method of, um, deleting all the stuff that isn't gliders, and then dividing the remaining population (425) by 5.

Except apparently I divided the hundreds place by 4 instead. 85 gliders, as you say. Quick update to the LifeWiki coming up...!

Yup, in a 1x1 bounded universe or a 1x1 torus, an ON cell is a Garden of Eden but an OFF cell is not.

Seems like that pretty much concludes the things that one can say about patterns in 1x1 universes.
