I felt there needed to be a thread for this.

This thread is meant to be like a combination of the Thread for requesting help, the Thread for your basic questions, and the part of the Gustavo ramos Rehermann's patterns thread where he accepts those challenges.

You can ask for help on something, and it can be as varied as "I need a challenge involving glider syntheses" to "I want some help with this P458 gun in ATPP".
Or you can respond to someone's request for help/whatever.

To start, how would I make a distaff rake/glider loop rake based on the c/7o in eatsplosion?
Here it is, for reference:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 7, rule = B2n3-ekqy4c5e/S2-cn3-eky4aij5e

It's not clear that that will be possible. First you need a way for a c/7 ship to have a non-trivial effect on a still life or active reaction as it passes by. I haven't tried all possible glider collisions, but on a quick search I can find a way to delete a glider (below right) -- but all other reactions I've tried, even grazing ones, seem to destroy the c/7.

Code: Select all

x = 50, y = 15, rule = B2n3-ekqy4c5e/S2-cn3-eky4aij5e
bo5bo25bobo6bo5bo$obo3bobo25b2o5bobo3bobo$2obobob2o25bo6b2obobob2o$3bo
bo38bobo$2b2ob2o36b2ob2o$2bobobo36bobobo$2b2ob2o36b2ob2o6$15b3o$15bo$
16bo!
If you can use a c/7 to make some active junk out of an incoming glider, while still letting the c/7 escape, then that would be a start. Or make the active junk out of any other fast spaceship that you might be able to turn active junk back into -- I haven't looked to see what's available in the eatsplosion rule.

To get a rake you'll eventually have to find a way to get two gliders out when you put one glider in, but there's no need to worry about that if you can't get past step 1. The c/7 seems to have thumb-like protrusions with some weak interaction potential, rather than actual usable sparks.

There is this, but the failed replicator goes at the wrong speed for a small rake.

Okay, that's a potential start -- except the bi-block settles faster than you really want, and it doesn't look like you can drive another c/7 past it and get a reaction going again.

Maybe you could get something to happen if a c/7 passes an active reaction made by crashing a second glider into the bi-block:

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 37, rule = B2n3-ekqy4c5e/S2-cn3-eky4aij5e
20bo$20bobo$20b2o3$3bo5bo$2bobo3bobo$2b2obobob2o$5bobo$4b2ob2o$4bobobo
$4b2ob2o19$bo5bo$obo3bobo$2obobob2o$3bobo$2b2ob2o29b3o$2bobobo29bo$2b
2ob2o30bo!
But if you go that route then you've more than doubled the size of your problem, because you have to produce two extra gliders along with the output glider, and get them into the right relative locations. Probably not an easy task, so this suggestion is a likely dead end.

Still, the next thing you'd want would be some kind of long-running active reaction, with lots of opportunities to affect it in different ways by sending a c/7 past it. Basically you just keep experimenting and collecting mechanisms, and eventually see if you can string them together somehow to close your loop.

Yes-- I have tried to find a way to do so but the ship's head extends a little too far past its usable sparks.

Perhaps this could be remedied with this reaction?

After posting this in the thread for basic questions, I wondered about making rake guns in life with the strategy of using the rakes' gliders to synthesize more rakes. How would I go about this? I suppose I would need a rake synthesis; none of the rakes listed on the wiki have syntheses listed on the wiki even though there are obviously rake syntheses, especially for space rake or something.

EDIT:
an ecologist synth picked out of the golly pattern collection:

Code: Select all

x = 62, y = 82, rule = B3/S23
4bo$5bo$3b3o2$12bo$10bobo$11b2o2$6bobo$7b2o$7bo18$23bo$24bo$22b3o21$4b

53bobo$53b2o$54bo8$35b2o$34bobo$36bo2$50bo$49b2o$49bobo!
perhaps this ecologist-based backwards space rake would be best, because it should be easily synthesized and the gliders are fairly well spaced:

Code: Select all

#N Backward space rake
#C Stolen from the wiki
x = 23, y = 20, rule = b3/s23

o3bo13bo2bob$4bo18b$o2bo!

But it’s not the same; I want a rake gun that uses the rakes’ own output to drive the gun;
It would be an “engineless gun”.
