Glider-loop puffers should be pretty easy too. Unfortunately, since 4c/18 is very close to c/4, low-period loops are currently impossible.

GUYTU6J's old 2c/4 partial, could be useful for seeding RLS searches. Posting here for future reference.

EDIT: That did not pan out nearly as well as I hoped.
Edit 2: Two seeds for odd-symmetric searches:

Would anyone be interested in a sort of "math challenge/academic challenge of the day" sort of thread? I guess it's technically not related to GoL, but it is academic, which might help reduce low-signal high-noise posting.

Asking here, I guess, to gauge interest without bothering somewhere more GoL-centered.

Or I suppose we could just do that in this thread-- no reason to create a new one!

Anyway, here are some challenges EZL and I have looked at, related to a 3-ary self-distributive property:

- What are some examples of functions with domain and range over Z_n (for various n) which satisfy f(a,b,f(c,d,e))=f(f(a,b,c),f(a,b,d),f(a,b,e)), f(a,f(b,c,d),e)=f(f(a,b,e),f(a,c,e),f(a,d,e)), f(a,0,0)=a+1 mod n?
- what functions with domain and range over Z_4 satisfy f(a,b,f(x,y,z)) = f(f(a,b,x),f(a,b,y),f(a,b,z)) and f(a,0,0)=a+1 mod n?

Solutions-- and problems-- relating to this are, of course, welcome.

@squareroot12621, now that you're famous and all, please just do a quick review of the first sentence of the forums' rule #4. The goal we generally try for is to keep the discussions on topic and the signal-to-noise ratio relatively high, especially/mostly in threads outside of the Sandbox.

@yujh, your one-liner response didn't say anything about the topic of the thread either, and it caused another response that also didn't say anything about engineered diehards. That makes your contribution at least twice as out of line as squareroot12621's original post.

It would be good if you could continue to practice just ignoring this kind of thing, especially from newcomers to the forums; if you think about it, it wasn't squareroot12621's post that actually wasted the time of a Grumpy Old Lifenthusiast moderator -- it was your post.

Couldn't agree more. 给我整破防辣

Personally, as an user who has stayed in the forums for several years, I feel ashamed by the idea that simply starting a topic that HAPPENS to be suitable for others to deposit their notable work makes the new thread-creator FAMOUS. While this time I can interpret it as an early April 1st joke, I have to confess that I keep feeling myself incompetent in FAMOUS CGoL pattern construction. I am in the former situation of Freywa but only eight years worse. Basically nobody cared about repeat results, and doing a few still life and oscillator syntheses on the catalog of easy and (sorry for being a bit exaggerative here) labor-intensive part does not make myself stand out apart from getting me a long list of redlinks. (Even if I want, I don't know how to synthesize space-dusty spaceships.)

(the second RLE is from the (2,1)c/6 technology thread; LifeViewer commands are added by me)

I like the combination of tracking feature with LifeHistory theme because it makes it easier to see that the thing is a moving object. If someone does not want tracking, it can be disabled through GUI by clicking the button in the lifeviewer window. (On the other hand, it seems impossible - at least I do not know how to - for a user to enable tracking through LifeViewer's GUI if there are no lifeviewer commands in the posted code to begin with. With a spaceship I can enable autofit feature through the GUI (and Golly also has the autofit feature which is often useful) but the movement is not constant-speed in that case; with a puffer or a rake, autofit seems to become less useful for this use case.) And I do like to keep the object of interest visible and have the output (if any) move away.

Use code tags, not viewer tags.
Not everybody wants to see your patterns, and this causes much more bugs than opening a viewer by some codes.
I would suggest you to not be Yujh and be nicer? Like pls? Idk

The waypoints are especially annoying. They don’t alllow you to control the screen.
Hit "R" or the reset button once as soon as LifeViewer opens, and all the waypoint stuff is instantly disabled. That doesn't seem too terribly inconvenient, given how useful LifeViewer commands can be sometimes.

I made a simplified version of LifeHistory, just as a starter for Tutorials/Creating custom rules.

I believe that this is not what the history part meant for, it’s just an extra function. Also no idea that this article existed

Do they exist in Minecraft?
  • Block: Yes, they're everywhere.
  • Blinker: You can turn a redstone lamp on and off repeatedly.
  • Beehive: Yes, added recently.
  • Glider: Do elytras count?
  • Loaf: Yes, bread is an item.
  • Boat: Yes.
  • Ship: No, only your one-person boat.
  • Tub: You can create one by building a hole and filling it with water.
  • Pond: Yes, they occur naturally.
  • Long boat: No, boats only come in one size.
  • Toad: Frogs exist in the 1.19 experimental snapshots.
  • Ship-tie: No.
  • Beacon: Yes, and they are extremely powerful.
  • Barge: No, again, boats come in one size only.
  • Half-bakery: I suppose you could create a shop that sells both bread and other foods.
  • Mango: No, but melons exist.
  • Eater 1: Not really.
  • Lightweight spaceship: Creating self-moving redstone contraptions with pistons is possible, but I don't think it would qualify as a LWSS.
  • Long barge: Again, boats only come in one size.
  • Aircraft carrier: No. No aircraft, either.
  • Pulsar: No.
  • Paperclip: No.
  • Middleweight spaceship: See lightweight spaceship.
  • Long ship: No, one size boats again.
  • Integral sign: Well, you can type it in chat if you know how to...
  • Shillelagh: Do axes count?
  • Boat-tie: You can have two boats next to each other, but you can't tie them together.
  • Snake: No snake mobs yet.

You can tile the glider:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
2BD3FB2D4.D$BDBF2B2D2F2.D6.2BD3FB2D$B3DF2BFDF.7D.BDBF2B2D2F$9.F2.D6.B
3DF2BFDF$13.D14.F! [[ ZOOM 20 VIEWONLY ]]
You can also place it on top of itself:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 16, rule = LifeHistory
2BD3FB2D$BDBF2B2D2F$B3DF2BFDF$9.F$4.D$3.3D$2.D.D.D$4.D$4.D$4.D$4.D2$2B
D3FB2D$BDBF2B2D2F$B3DF2BFDF$9.F! [[ ZOOM 28 VIEWONLY ]]
Therefore, the glider can be a periodic tiling. :)

Code: Select all

4b8o$4b8o$4b8o$4b8o$4o8b4o$4o8b4o$4o8b4o$4o8b4o$4o8b4o$4o8b4o$4o8b4o$4o8b4o$4b8o$4b8o$4b8o$4b8o![[ THEME 0 AUTOSTART GPS 8 Z 16 T 1 T 1 Z 19.027 T 2 T 2 Z 22.627 T 3 T 3 Z 26.909 T 4 T 4 Z 32 T 5 T 5 Z 38.055 T 6 T 6 Z 45.255 T 7 T 7 Z 53.817 LOOP 8 ]]

Re: Engineered numbers

Post by yujh » April 8th, 2022, 8:25 am

when i am bored, i sometimes add or remove 1 from a number, and then try to calculate it, making a "engineered number" 61 is a good number because it equals to 1 + 60.
