With so few transition differences between Conway's Life and pi-puffer Life, you'll find that there are quite a few reactions that work the same way in both. MIght be worth doing some experimenting on large stamp-collection pages, for example, and just see what works and doesn't explode.
Yes, that's one of the advantages of exploring a rule that is similar to B3S23; people have extensively explored that rule and found a lot of patterns, and a decent fraction of those patterns will also work in any closely related rule (unless it's B2a3S23 or something). Something that might be useful is a collection of smallish patterns in ConwayLife designed for being tested in other rules. Sure, one could just run individual collections in the relevant rule, but I don't want to have to do that individually for over a dozen collections.

This tells me that the lightweight emulator (and also the middleweight and heavyweight emulators, but it was only necessary to include one), fumarole, and octagon 2 work in NewSnakeLife. I knew that the fumarole works in NewSnakeLife, but I didn't know that octagon 2 and the XWSS emulators work there, so this was useful for me.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Good news: There's a smaller (6,1)c/6 frontend that I forgot about.
Bad news: It's tucked away on a piece of paper that I don't have with me right now. I'll share the frontend in the morning. Hopefully the dot dies out in that rule-I find frontends where the dot dies out to be much easier to stabilize than frontends where the dot explodes.

For user mode:
stack overflow -> raises SIGSEGV -> call signal handler if stack space is available, otherwise kill the process
For kernel mode:
kernel stack overflow -> fault -> double fault (CPU reads TSS) -> crash (e.g. BSOD)
double fault + fault -> restart CPU
For windows user:

Raise first chance exception (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION) in kernel mode
Raise second chance exception in user mode
If debugger is not attached, kill the process
