Re: Let's create a good language!
Okay. For pronouns, I propose <lit-> for first person, <so-> for second person, <hai-> for third person animate (he/she/etc), and <zen-> for third person inanimate (it/etc). These take the usual case/number endings. As usual, these aren't final. Also, I propose <ngwe-> for "food".

Re: Let's create a good language!
I think we should have a separate plural suffix for persons. Or should we have entirely different plural persons?fluffykitty wrote: ↑November 18th, 2020, 6:34 amOkay. Re: Let's create a good language!
There's no single plural suffix, since that's included in the case markers, so separate plural pronouns. Also, if we don't do that, third person plural with both animates and inanimates uses <hai->.
That's not a user page. You should move it to your userspace.Schiaparelliorbust wrote: ↑November 18th, 2020, 3:17 pmAlso, I made the language part on my user page: https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Hunting%27s_language

The page could not be moved, for the following reasons:
The title is the same; cannot move a page over itself.
A page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid. Please choose another name.

https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/User:Sc ... s_language is usable. Also, we still need verb affixes and auxiliaries before we can start making sentences.

Ok then infinitive is -(m)ay. M is there if and only if it ends with a vowel. I think I did it: https://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/Schiapa ... s_languagefluffykitty wrote: ↑November 18th, 2020, 4:08 pmhttps://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/User:Sc ... s_language is usable. You need to select the User namespace. Also, infinitives are great and all, but we still need the finite forms.

How do I do that?
Ok then simple present will be -han + person suffix. I don't think present continuous should use an auxiliary verb. What do you think?fluffykitty wrote: ↑November 18th, 2020, 4:23 pmAlso, infinitives are great and all, but we still need the finite forms.

Re: Let's create a good language!
There's a dropdown on the "Move page" page.
Okay. How about we make the person suffixes be the pronoun stems without the initial consonant? A primitive present continuous might be a good idea. How do you think we should do passive stuff?Schiaparelliorbust wrote: ↑November 18th, 2020, 4:43 pmOk then simple present will be -han + person suffix. The page doesn't work now. It returns me to the main page.
I think that maybe we can change the vowels in the pronoun stems to make suffixes. For passive, there should be a suffix like verb + suffix.fluffykitty wrote: ↑November 18th, 2020, 5:09 pmOkay. That works.
Okay. What should the tense endings be?

Minor, this is not Hunting's Language - this is a collabrative project.

One thing that we should do is not have one-to-one translations between (all of) our words and English words. For example, we could have <kxuzp> "door/window" and <kets> "water (nonpotable)". For base, I've heard good things about base six.Schiaparelliorbust wrote: ↑November 19th, 2020, 6:07 amCan you make some too? Also, can we choose our number base?

Ok, that certainly makes sense. It makes it more realistic. Though I really do think that door and window should be separate words. They are very different things, the only thing they have in common really is the ability to open and close.fluffykitty wrote: ↑November 19th, 2020, 6:43 amOne thing that we should do is not have one-to-one translations between (all of) our words and English words. - Can be opened and closed
- Air and people can pass through if open
- Often lockable

You can say that for many other things.fluffykitty wrote: ↑November 19th, 2020, 7:04 amSimilarities:

Clouds and fog:
[*]Both are made of tiny water droplets.
[*]Both can obscure your view.
[*]Both are colorless.
Languages oftentimes have two or more words describing very similar things like "lose" and "misplace" in English.

Re: Let's create a good language!
That's true. Maybe we should use the same word for "cloud" and "fog".Schiaparelliorbust wrote: ↑November 19th, 2020, 7:16 amYou can say that for many other things

Distinctions like that aren't always made. For example, French "savoir" and "connaître" are both (usually) translated as "to know".Schiaparelliorbust wrote: ↑November 19th, 2020, 7:16 amLanguages oftentimes have two or more words describing very similar things like "lose" and "misplace" in English.

Turkish also makes that distinction "bilmek" - "savoir" and "tanımak" - "connaître".
