Umnjaaw language

Post by BokaBB » November 15th, 2020, 6:51 am

Another language project by me.
Some time ago I have posted about the existence of the Umnjaaw aliens which I once fought. It is going to be a right moment to create their language.
I imagine Umnjaaw language as extremely.... better see it yourself.
Here is a small amount of random text that should say. It doesn't mean anything concrete, just a demostration how Umnjaaw language should look like.

Trrrenggrrrgrtr Umnjaawrentgrreengrgrhua hrtrgrhgdddgreerrrrrar grtttrrgrntgreaentgr rtgrrentrrrr.

In order to make it we need to solve some problems.

1. Phonology and orthography
A -/a/
G -/g/
R -/r/
H -/h/
E -/e/
U-/u/
T -/t/
W -/v/ or /w/,not sure
D - /d/
J - /j/
M-/m/
N -/n/
Ng - ng sound as in Hongkong
Nj - the sound of the Serbian Њ,please find out what is it in IPA.

2. Structure
I am not yet sure but I think it should be an agglutinative language like German,Inuktitut,Hungarian or Turkish and be capable of producing extremly long words like trrengrrengggrergrrtgrwearreewwttrrgrgrggrghhtrrenggrrrhuargrrengrgtrengrrrrengtrgrhrgrtreenggrrgrthengrrr (it is supposed to be one word, but you may see it broken). I don't have yet decided anything else, but hopefully will with my friends if we solve some arguments. You can also join this project.
3. HOW THE PUCK HUMAN BEINGS SHOULD PRONOUNCE IT.
Umnjaaw have better developed vocal organs than us and the sounds I saw are in the language are just the closest we can get(fortunanely, there exactly as much sounds in actuall Umnjaaw as in my representation and there are no problems in that section). We MUST find an easy way to pronounce this language without changing body. Pronouncing it letter by letter must be boring and I think we must speak Umnjaaw as some sort of roaring from the throat that resembles sounds of our languages. It would be hard to learn to do such a thing, howeve
The only word with the established meaning so far is Umnjaaw that is the name of the beings that speak this language.
Come to a challenge and participate in making Umnjaaw!
I promise I won't be authoritary.
Have a good day!

Њ is /ɲ/. You can find IPA values of Serbian Cyrillic characters at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_Cyrillic_alphabet.

No problem, but I made this on laptop. Also, I often have insufficient time to see IPA value.
Can you participate in making this language?I promise I won't be authoritary neither here nor in making Komal.

Trrrenggrrrgrtr
lol but wouldn't the trills just conglomerate and make it something more like /treŋgrgrtr/? Regardless, /ŋgrgrtr/ is a consonant cluster to be reckoned with, unless you're gonna have something be syllabic

see also: /hrtrgrhgdddgr/ in hrtrgrhgdddgreerrrrrar (also I'd recommend you have a rule against repeating a phoneme multiple times in a row in the same syllable)

I'd kind of recommend that the language not have such... long consonant clusters unless you're aiming for this perhaps?

-------------------------------------------

funny idea: make it a true alien language. this is a linguistics term used to describe a conlang/language that has the absence of a linguistic universal. i won't go too much in depth about them but basically they're patterns that commonly occurs systematically across natural languages. linguistic universals include having "proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.", having "vowels and consonants", and so on.

examples include kelen, drsk and some of my own cursedlangs that i hope never see the light of day

or you could keep it as a natural language, just make a really abstract and confusing writing system

or you could make it so that it's phonology has sounds that haven't even been given letters by the ipa or are just impossible for humans to make (such as a velar trill, glottal trill, pharyngeal lateral fricative, whatever)

thread for other ridiculous linguistics concepts - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4864
i is squishyboi, a professional dumbass hiding in the sandbox

get some icecream here - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4666
also painfully relevant - super loaf

Umnjaaw have different vocal organs.
The fact that multiple same sounds are next to each other is a SOUL of this language.
Please begin making it.

How we should pronounce it?Sound by sound? As some kind or roaring from the throat?Don't pronounce it at all ourselves?Umnjaaw don't have many vocal cords.I will stop making them temporarily.
