The tub is slightly unusual, but it's really just engaging via B3c instead of the usual B3q.

Yeah. Still looks like a standard interaction with a nonstandard engagement.

Nice! I know I found that catalyst at one point but I definitely don't remember finding anything that simple to react with it.

Yes, although to be fair, your example here uses a P pentomino parent that turns right back into a block as soon as it has two cells instead of three on the row above the long Z again, which I think is more common, as opposed to mine, which takes three more generations to recover. Also, I managed to reduce its population by one cell.

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
2o$o$6bo$2b3o2b3o$8bo2$7b2o$7b2o$11bo$7b5o$7bo$9bo$8b2o!
Also, when I was trying to reduce it further, I found a much more contrived extension of that interaction.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
8b2o5bo$9b2o2b2o$14b2o2$5bo$obo7bo$b2o3b3o2b3o$bo10bo2$11b2o$11b2o$15b
o$4b2o5b5o$3bobo5bo$5bo7bo$12b2o!

Edit: Here's a slightly different recovery:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
8bo$8bo$8bo$o$5bo$b3o2b3o$7bo2$6b2o$6b2o$10bo$6b5o$6bo$8bo$7b2o!

Another edit: I got two more recoveries.

Code: Select all

x = 55, y = 17, rule = B3/S23
6bobo7bo26bo9bo$7b2o5bo2bo26b2o5bo2bo$7bo6b3o26b2o6b3o$15bo36bo$35bo$
6bo29bo6bo$bobo7bo24bobobo7bo$2b2o3b3o2b3o24b2o3b3o2b3o$2bo10bo25bo10b
o2$12b2o35b2o$12b2o35b2o$o15bo36bo$o4b2o5b5o25b2o5b5o$o3bobo5bo28bobo
5bo$6bo7bo28bo7bo$13b2o35b2o!

Yet another edit: I reduced the population of the active region for the catalysis where the block recovers quickly to nine.

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
bo2bo$2o3b3o$o5bo2$5b2o$5b2o$9bo$5b5o$5bo$7bo$6b2o!
I also achieved a population of nine by modifying wwei23's example.

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
obo$b2o$3bobo$3bobo$4bo2$3b2o$3b2o$o$5o$4bo$2bo$2b2o!
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Here's an unusual ship and fishhook catalysis (followed by a standard ship and fishhook catalysis for extra style points):

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 26, rule = B3/S23
2bo$obo$b2o24bo$27bobo$27b2o4$14bo$12b2o2$12bo$12bo$12bo4$2b3o$17b2o$
17bobo$18b2o2$15b2o$16bo$13b3o$13bo!

Edit: I found another (which unfortunately messes up the first).

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 19, rule = B3/S23

Another edit: Here are two unusual block catalyses:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
5b2o$5b2o4$12bo$12bo$2o10bo$2o3$7bo$6b3o$6bo!

Yet another edit: Here is an unusual fishhook catalysis:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
3bobo$2b3o2$5bo$5b3o$2b2o$bobo$bo$2o!

Fourth edit: Here's yet another unusual ship and fishhook catalysis:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 12, rule = B3/S23
2bo$2b3o$5bo$4b2o2$7b2o$6bobo$bobo2b2o$bo2bo$3bo$2o$o!

Fifth edit: Here's an unusual tub catalysis:

Code: Select all

10bo$9bobo$10bo7$17b2o$3o14b2o$10b2o$9bo2bo$12bo$5b5ob2o$7bo$8b2o!

Sixth edit: Here's an unusual eater 5 catalysis:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

Seventh edit: Here's an unusual block catalysis:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
