Methuselahs

Post by cgoler2 » March 11th, 2021, 1:57 pm

I found a very small methuselah that stabilizes at generation ~5000. It emits a rare eater 1 at one point.

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=-17,-7 Gen=53
x = 4, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
bo$b2o$3bo$3bo$2b2o$2bo$2bo$2bo$bo$bo$2o!

First of all, welcome to the forums. I recommend that you read the forum rules. For example, rule four states that one should only post discoveries that are new and interesting, and 4iib specifically lists a methuselah that lasts for fewer that 20,000 generations or does not fit in a square with side length twenty. While you methuselah does fit in a square with side length twenty, it only lasts for about 5,000 generations, as you stated. In addition, you should be aware that not every pattern deserves its own thread. There are several threads that serve as a collection for many patterns, such as https://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1141, and posting your methuselah in there or certain other already-existing threads instead of creating a new thread would have been better.
As for fishhooks, while they are not extremely common, they aren't rare either (although the way that the fishhook is formed in your pattern isn't one of the most common methods. For example, here is a transparent fishhook reaction.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Bunnies has 9 cells and creates a scorpion.

I managed to get yours down from 14 to 12 cells:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
2b3o$3bo$4bo4$bo$bo$o$2bo$b3o!
This is just R + wing, so while it might look arbitrary in its initial form, it's simpler than it looks.

This is a good glider+lwss synthesis for a methuselah.

Code: Select all

Please stop posting useless methuselahs outside of the useless discoveries thread. It's getting annoying (which I'm sure is why rule four exists in the first place).

yes, if you are fascinated with Methuselah, pls vote for 52513M in POTY 2021 (next year).
That Methuselah lasts 52513 generations:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
3o2b2obob2ob3o$2obob3o4bobo$bo2bo2bobob3obo$2bo2b2o3bo2bo$2bo5bobo3b2o

What's the longest known methuselah made from two common objects? (I wouldn't call the larger of the two objects in Lidka common.)

In page 1 of Useless Discoveries, two Rs take 9,496 generations to stabilize, and the initial pattern is even simpler than most, since it has C2 symmetry. This beats the OP's pattern.

Maybe this would be good:

Code: Select all

The longest that I can think of is blom. Also, bunnies becomes an R-sequence and a honey farm predecessor early in its evolution.

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
6bobo$7bo2bo$bo8b2o$b2o$2o!
Also, one predecessor consists of an I-sequence hitting a block.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
bo$2o5bo$6bo$6bo$5bo$4bo$4bo!

Does the spark in the middle count as an object?

It's part of the honey farm predecessor. Without it, the honey farm predecessor would instead be a block predecessor.

It's barely a methuselah, only 216 generations. Also, the fact that it's made out of blocks in not interesting. Methuselahs are barely ever notable. Please read the forum rules.

I've tried moving one or two of the blocks to various locations. 216 generations is at about the 40th percentile, i.e. below average.
