EDIT by dvgrn: Moving all these to a Sandbox thread for now, just as a nice example of "please read the forum rules"

There is a new flotilla in the G1 census:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
oooooobobooboobo$
oboboboobbobbbob$
oboobobooboobobo$

ooobbobboobooboo$
oobobboobbbbobob$

oooobbobbbbobooo!
I think the way it forms is quite standard, but the interesting thing is how wide it is!
if you look in T 215 south of the
(x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
oooooobobooboobo$
oboboboobbobbbob$
oboobobooboobobo$
oobbbobboooboooo$

bobooboobobobobb$
bbbbobobbbbooooo$
bobboboooobboobo$
ooobbobboobooboo$

you will see 3 blue thingies (if not gliders)

Hello, Conway-gamer! People are starting to report your posts to the moderation queue, and that will probably start happening more if you keep posting messages along these lines.

First, here's a link to the forum rules. A lot of us long-term forum dwellers would greatly prefer it if you wouldn't post multiple short messages in a row on the same thread -- see rule 3(a). People who are subscribed to the thread then end up getting multiple notifications, which gets annoying after a while.

Instead, in cases like this, hit the pencil button to edit your previous post and add your additional thought by adding it there with the word "EDIT:". (bubblegum already said this, but she might have said it too short to be understandable to a newcomer. By contrast, brevity is not one of my faults, but I may have others...) EDIT: fixed pronoun.

Also, please do some reading in the LifeWiki and/or the Life Lexicon. The "glider gun-methuselah hybrid" you're talking about is more or less a glider-producing switch engine, with a block-laying switch engine along for the ride. I guess it qualifies as an ark, since there are some high-period interactions going on behind the BLSE and GPSE. But maybe not, since the two switch engines are both independently stable if you remove the other one.

Switch engines have been common knowledge for fifty years now. We're very happy to have new people come along and discover all this interesting stuff that's showing up in Catagolue, but if you have basic questions about what they are or what they're commonly called, it would be good to ask those in the basic questions thread.

(People who have been looking at these things for a long time tend to be painfully careful with their terminology. The puffer that you're talking about can't be a gun, because the glider source is moving... and it's not a methuselah either, because it doesn't last very long before it "goes boring".)

There's no need to point out the blue thingies -- that flotilla is why Hartmut posted that soup here, and everyone reading the thread already saw them and knows what they are. They're two LWSSes and an MWSS traveling together.

That post has one more example of something to please not do. There wasn't any need to put in a second copy of the pattern, since you had just quoted it... and when you do paste RLE into a message, please remember to put [code] tags around it, so that it can be displayed in LifeViewer.

To be specific, the puffer here can be colloquially (? i guess, it's not documented on the wiki anyway) referred to as a dirty rake, to express the fact that it produces spaceships not that anyone really calls it anything other than a GPSE.

also my pronouns are she/her, idk if i left something in my profile or what

Many patterns with four-way symmetry and an odd number of rows and columns in the center will produce that pattern. It's called a pulsar.

Code: Select all

x = 60, y = 3, rule = B3/S23

As hotdogPi said, pulsars are pretty common, so predecessors are not notable.
This definitely doesn't deserve a new thread. Maybe take a look at the forum rules?
Also, Golly (golly.sourceforge.net because I don't know how to add external links) is a CA editor that's much better than the online web applet you're using. It also has a lot of demo patterns for you to take a look at.
