Is there a "Tangram holiday"? If not, maybe we could make today the "Tangram holiday".

I first saw tangram as a kid. I had a set and played around with making shapes, but I was never that excited by it. At the time I was also interested in origami and found its geometry more interesting (the similarity being that both use the geometry of dividing squares with 90° and 45° angles... and more for origami). The tile set strikes me as a little arbitrary, e.g. compared to Pentominoes, where the puzzle is defined by a complete set meeting combinatorial criteria (i.e. the 12 pentominoes). I.e., why do two kinds of right triangles repeat but the middle one is paired with a equal-area parallelogram? (So you can pack it into a square I guess, but it still seems like an arbitrary choice.)

Random thought: how about recursive tangrams in which the middle square is partitioned into tangrams? What kinds of shapes could you make? Not exactly fractals because the small parts would be limited to a small area. I'm not sure.

You can dissect a right triangle or parallelogram as shown on the Wikipedia page. This gives a fully recursive Tangram tiling:

If you drop some shapes (the square or maybe the parallelogram, which I never liked ) then you should get a fractal along the lines of the Sierpinski carpet. Hausdorff dimension left as an exercise.

Inkscape tip: It is really easy to draw Tangram by snapping to midpoints. I draw the thick blue lines in Inkscape but stole the center dissections from wikipedia (I am tempted to redo the whole thin in Inkscape but I feel I have used up enough time already.)
