Since there is a renewed interest in rule B1x2_S23V and not wishing to pollut the thread on the Other Cellular Automata board I have started a new thread in the Sandbox.
It turns out that rule B1x2_S23V is a member of Square Cell's Rule Table family. The Rule Table dialogue is:
I tried some variants. For example this one:
which supports knight ships.
