Just a reminder that your rulestring is slightly corrupted apgsearch doesn't like it. I'm now trying to apgsearch this rule.
Edit: very very cool.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 7, rule = S02a3enr4aei5cq6akn8/B2a3ej4aeik5c6ekn7c/9
4AB$.A2BCD$.AC2DEF$ABCE2FGH$.CDEG2H$2.EFG$3.GH!

Since Square Cell, Life Viewer and Golly accept my rule string, perhaps apgsearch is too picky!

your string is not in the correct order. you wrote 4ekai instead of 4aeik(lifeviewer will automatically change your rule string. when you click change rule it gives the correct one.)

A robust program should not require the letters to be in any particular order.

well it does require that, and it's obviously not my fault. I guess I will just have to waste a few minutes everytime. but I do write my rulestrings in the right order so most people usually doesn't get themselves into trouble.

Here is the Square Cell dialog that is used to select and display non totalistic rules:

It displays the rule in this thread. Notice how easy it is to experiment when testing a rule. Change the arrangement of highlighted buttons by simply clicking on them and then run the simulation to see the effect. The buttons are clearly marked and no letter translation is required.

What yujh meant is that there are a few extra transitions, which is quite visible when comparing with the images in Hensel's table. If "full" symmetry is implemented as rotate4reflect, then the inconsistency would become curious.

All of my example patterns in this thread were generated by Square Cell using the rule table above. What is curious about them?

Sorry for the confusion, but by "a few extra transitions" and "inconsistency" I meant in the rule setting dialog, not in the generated pattern. I am curious why Square Cell is programmed to show the dialog that is different from the official transition table.

It seems that oscillators and guns of all periods > 12 can be constructed using patterns like these:

I think my implementation of the non totalistic rule family was one of the first. This reference:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1077&p=7774

tells what motivated me. At that time there was no 'official transition table'.

My implementation permits the exploration of rules with just rotational symmetry and rules with no symmetry in addition to rules with full symmetry. To preserve a desired symmetry, one must carefully select buttons when playing with the rule dialog.

It turns out that with careful arrangement of the parts the original oscillator design does support oscillators and guns with all periods > 11.

Oscillators can be constructed with periods 24, 28, 32 ...

Code: Select all

x = 57, y = 15, rule = b2a3ej4ekai5c6ekn7c/s02a3enr4eai5cq6kan8/9
A.A.A.A.A.A.A9.A.A.A.A.A.A.A9.A.A.A.A.A.A.A2$A11.A9.A11.A9.A11.A2$A
11.A9.A11.A9.A11.A$5.A.A19.A.A19.A.A$A.H9.A9.A11.A9.A11.A$3.FGDEBC2A
16.A.A19.A.A$A.GHEFCDABA.A9.A.H9.A9.A11.A$25.FGDEBC2A16.A.A$A.A.A.A
.A.A.A9.A.GHEFCDABA.A9.A.H9.A$47.FGDEBC2A$22.A.A.A.A.A.A.A9.A.GHEFC
DABA.A2$44.A.A.A.A.A.A.A!
Dividing this sequence by 2 and 4 shows how all periods > 11 can be obtained:

24 12
28 14
32 16
36 18
40 20
44 22
48 24
52 26 13
56 28
60 30 15
64 32
68 34 17

The first 4 oscillators and guns:

Code: Select all

I'm now trying to apgsearch this rule.
Did you find anything interesting?

By running this rule starting from a random distribution, many natural guns like this:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 19, rule = b2a3ej4ekai5c6ekn7c/s02a3enr4eai5cq6kan8/9
9.A$7.A4.A2$14.A$17.A$4.A3$2.A3$16.A$.A12.A$8.DC7.A$.2G.H2.ED.C2A$2.
2H.2HDF2DABA4.A$A.2GH.FGDEBC2A2$3.A2.A.A2.A2.A!
can be found.

Can anyone show that no oscillator or gun with a period < 12 exists?

I made it check if there is an explosion or not, so the script didn’t go through all soups(or it won’t be possible to search). The only thing I found new is they/2d ship that I posted a while ago.

Consider variants of the 9 state rule above. The simplest of these just change the number of states while using the same rule table.

Examples of an oscillator and corresponding gun for:

Notice that the still life tracks need to be modified for the 3 and 4 state examples but the 5, 6, 7 and 8 state examples use the 9 state tracks.

Sarah and otismo,

The 5 state variant seems to be the best:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 9, rule = b2a3ej4ekai5c6ekn7c/s02a3enr4eai5cq6kan8/5
4.A4$A4.2A.A$3.CDAB$4.BCA2$4.A!
Two ships in the original 9 state rule have been found.

The 2 state variant is different and challenging. A rule for the real enthusiasts among us.

21 state (well, arbitrarily large state numbers) are interesting:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 9, rule = b2a3ej4ekai5c6ekn7c/s02a3enr4eai5cq6kan8/21
4.A4$A4.2A.A$3.CDAB$4.BCA2$4.A!
:?: :?: . . . :!:
Give me a suggestion of something to draw here!
