Also, I've got difficulties with DNA.

I thought it would be more reasonable to leave the effort of describing/presenting someone else's ideas to someone else, no?

Linking to someone's (possibly incomplete) recently made page in this way looks like you're trying to "manage" them and their ideas. Please don't do things like that.

I was just told this morning that a moderator have "asked [you] to stop responding to [my] posts and LifeWiki edits for a while". Now I am not believing that it worked.

I see the published LifeWiki user page, I am in favor of the author's idea, I build my opinion based on it and then I just make a post with proper attribution. Did I steal their creation by claiming that it is mine? No. Did I distort their thoughts in a malicious manner? No. Did I violate other copyright rules? No. I have never heard about any academic integrity restrictions that prohibits citing published but incomplete ideas. Certainly you can ask others not to use your public incomplete idea, but I see that as a special case and not a general assumption. You can instead just develop the idea to maturity and not describe/present it until you feel it is safe.

At least, you did understand that this is related to academic integrity, and you did acknowledge that you understand this.

Yes, explicit is better than implicit. Explicitly speaking, what is your issue and what do you think should be done instead?

In this case, you could probably give someone else chance to present their ideas separately from your ideas.

Saying "On the same topic" and "a further step" mixes two different things:
* something from a recently created page in someone else's userspace,
* your thoughts about the topic.

"On the same topic" and "a further step" also may or may not be an incorrect interpretation of someone's ideas.

You are phrasing as if my temporally/chronologically earlier post has deprived their chance to present their ideas, which is false. There is no action that I did that physically or mentally inhibited them from making the LifeWiki page at the beginning, or crossposting the content to forums thread later. Or should I think LifeWiki page as not a presentation?
Saying "On the same topic" and "a further step" mixes two different things:

* your thoughts about the topic.
How so, semantically? I understand that there is a shared focus between thoughts of the thread, thoughts of the LifeWiki page and thoughts of myself, so me saying "on the same topic" is at least reasonable to myself. There is also undoubtly distinct elements in the latter two thoughts, so me saying "a further step" is valid.
"On the same topic" and "a further step" also may or may not be an incorrect interpretation of someone's ideas.
Before the author speaks, how can anyone else determine what is correct interpretation and what is not?

I think it's much simpler than all that.

Just because something is not formally "prohibited"/"not recommended", does not mean it's a good idea to do that.

You could give them some chance and some time to present their ideas in some way, as they see reasonable. It is possible that they would do that -- or it is possible that they would not do that and leave that page as is -- no way to know for sure.

You could make an attempt to more clearly separate your thoughts from someone else's thoughts.

And meanwhile nobody else is not allowed to use that publicly viewable content? This is a nontrivial restriction.

Give me an example of phrasing that counts as "attempt to clearly separate". This chain of conversation could have ended much earlier if you had explicitly tossed this example out at the beginning.

You can do multiple different things with someone's work.
You can simply refer to someone's ideas, without attempting to "use" them in any particular specific way.
You can try to describe someone's work on it's own, if it's something more or less complete and you understand what it is all about.

The talk about "restrictions" is a distraction. Just because there is no formal restriction saying "do not do that", does not mean it's a good idea to do that.

Confocaloid, this ongoing conflict with GUYTU6J is really starting to look very silly, from a perspective outside of these endless arguments over nuances of phrasing.

Many of these attempts of yours to change GUYTU6J's behavior on the forums look very very similar to 'trying to "manage" them and their ideas'.

Please don't do that.

Official Public Polite Request
Since my private request clearly had no effect, I'll repeat it here: please take at least a month off from policing GUYTU6J on the forums and wiki, and just see how things look in 2023. If GUYTU6J does something that you find objectionable in the meantime, please give someone else a turn at trying to correct the problem -- without you pointing out the problem in any way, unless it directly affects something that you yourself are trying to accomplish.

Then, if nobody else says anything, please seriously consider the possibility that you're misreading GUYTU6J's intentions, and that whatever-it-is is might not be so objectionable after all -- possibly just a slightly non-standard phrasing, for example, maybe due to English not being GUYTU6J's first language.

I'm finding edits on the wiki where I prefer GUYTU6J's opinion, and other edits where I prefer your opinion. Of course I'm not sure that I'm right in either case. But I'm not finding any edits on either side where anyone is doing any significant damage to LifeWiki articles -- you're both just pursuing different visions of what works best on the LifeWiki, and stepping heavily on each other's toes in the process.

It would be great if you could find a way to give each other some space, such that convoluted discussions like the above never have to happen again. The last ten posts are clearly getting absolutely nowhere, while wandering off deeper and deeper into the weeds of "what I believe you meant when you said blah blah blah".

I'm sure they were all just as unpleasant to write as they are to read, so hopefully it will be great relief that you can both stop writing such things now.

I was going to feature this in a CGoL ArtWork - but it looks like a stand-alone
ArtWork all by itself - do not even know whose pattern it is - in one of book's
collections - should I go for it or leave it alone - DOES definitely inspire me...
Ha, that's definitely a piece of collaborative community art -- check out the attributions under the first entry in the Quetzal table as a starting point, but this particular one may have been an improvement on the original by someone not named there. Would have to check.

The form shown in the table is even bigger and more convoluted... but maybe that just makes it better from an artistic standpoint!

Anyway, the pattern in question was at one point the smallest-bounding-box p52 glider gun that anyone could come up with. It's a true-period Herschel-track-based gun, as the article says. In these micro-miniaturized modern days, it has been replaced in the gun collection with the slightly smaller and simpler

I would like our community to make an NFT of the above pattern in our NFT Gallery -

it does not HAVE to be priced, but I would like to see it priced @ Ten Million Dollars

( in ether or whatever crypto - and if a consensus develops to price it higher, I am all for it -

the higher, the better, in my not so humble opinion, and WE NEED TO DO THIS or be sorry... ).

EDIT ONE :

Because if/when the U$dollar IS crypto, I do not think anyone would object, NFTs will be "normal"

( even if we do not like it ) and other people ( like me ) will be making NFTs with or without the

support of this community ( which I for one would rather have ); not that THIS community would

make ANY NFTs "more legit" than any other NFTs; I just feel that this community should "control"

( be the ultimate "authority" over ) the most desirable CGoL NFTs that anyone would really want.

Cheers !

That makes the gun pseudo period. Generally we prefer the true-period gun unless the pseud-period gun has a smaller bounding box. In this case they have the same bounding box, so the true-period gun is preferred.

Edit: I was wrong, of course. The period-doubling semi-snark means the period-doubling boat-bit does not make the gun pseudo-period.

Can you describe specific symptoms of the problem? This is strange. IIRC cut-and-paste from code box to Golly always worked correctly for me regardless of any comments/commands, as well as saving the RLE to a file and opening it via File/Open pattern.

Here is why LifeWiki needs a General Disclaimer, like some other encyclopedias and reference works:
GUYTU6J wrote:For a statement "as of {{tl|currMY}}, no pattern with such property exists", it will remain true as long as no such pattern exists, and it is more up-to-date than using "as of year/month/day" when somebody just happened to think of checking the status. When a pattern with such property is found, it is expected for editors to delete in time the statement that has just shortly become false and add a description for the fresh discovery. What is the point of keeping a misleading (by virture of being outdated, not reflecting recent situation) statement of non-existence of something if nobody intends to update it? (Note: on the other hand I am fine with an existential statement like "as of year/month/day, one or more pattern with such property exists"; even if outdated it is verifiable and less misleading than the contrary.)
GUYTU6J wrote:That you do not see the implication does not ensure that no LifeWiki reader would think that way and then ask questions like "what is the current status, and why is LifeWiki not updated".

The template {{tl|currMY}} is to update statements of non-existence automatically so as to reduce workload for editors (no need to manually update [https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?titl ... did=120161 like this]). Statements of existence backed by construction/proof has a fixed date (that of publication), while statements of non-existence not backed by any rigorous proof do ''not'' because they are (to different possibilities) prone to be ruled out in a future date.
I believe people here are volunteers, and are not obliged to do anything - in particular, I think no one is obliged to update LifeWiki. An extremely short summary is that one should not expect too much from editors.

There seems to be something wrong when someone starts talking about "reducing workload for editors". The word "workload" seems to carry the implication of looking at something that was supposed to be a fun recreational-mathematics hobby -- and apparently failing to see anything fun -- and instead seeing a "job" to be done.

See, Life is not a "job". Life is a hobby. It is supposed to be fun.

The constant talk about "expecting from editors" and "misleading statements" is not exactly fun.

Very good point. So I designed a template that automatically updates LifeWiki statements. So what is the fuss here?

The template fails to accomplish what it is advertised to do. It "updates" only half of a statement.

As I already said on Template talk:CurrMY, there should be a fixed static date in "As of (date), ..." statements -- not something that changes dynamically.

The template attempts to do automatically something that is impossible to do automatically. I think the template should be deleted, and the transclusions reverted to the last specified fixed date, unless/until someone can update them properly.
