I've thought of a challenge that I think might be interesting.
What is the largest non-pseudo still life that you can find which can be cleanly destroyed by a single glider?
I'd probably exclude still lives such as long^n boats, because they kinda ruin the challenge.
Here is the largest one I've found so far, a 44-bit still life:
Code: Select all
x = 13, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

although a bit off-topic (too small to win any prizes), I just crafted this still life and tried to kill it 1G:

I hate to squelch your enthusiasm, but in theory one could build a long fuse and hit it with a glider. The fuse could be made longer to beat out any other still life:
Code: Select all

(provided, of course, that you could have a thing on the end that actually died instead of producing random ash; I just fooled around with the end of the fuse until it produced something that exploded when the fuse was hit.)

Here's a slightly less trivial way to construct very large still lifes. The tables in between stretched beehives can be changed (there should be an odd number of "tips" on each side).
Code: Select all
x = 150, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

This old fuse turn can also make complex still lives:

If we could make a still life that produces a single glider, that would allow for more things. It is possible to make a G-LWSS seed which could be connected to something:

That wasn't useful to the "random challenge" because you can't connect it, but it is a nice find.
The reason why I wanted to find a still life that cleanly produced a glider was to do stupid things like this:

Another interesting task would be to impose more constraints... would it be possible to create a large still life that a) is NOT extensible and b) can still be killed cleanly by one glider. I'm not sure whether a) is even possible, but it'd be worth a try.

The fuses with the barge bookends cannot be extended because the fuse would create 2 blocks and only 1 would be destroyed.
The short fuse (between the first glider producer and the first turner) cannot be extended because it would move the blinker further away from the glider (there may be a still life where it is longer).
The long fuse cannot be extended because it would change the timing between the glider and the LWSS and make the collision fail.
The fuse from the second glider producer to the second turner cannot be extended because then the second glider wouldn't make a LWSS.
Finally, the fuse between the second turner and the LWSS producer cannot be extended because the glider-LWSS collision would be shifted and wouldn't destroy the blinker.
It seems very likely that you could make much larger still lives just like this one. In fact, you can probably add many more cells onto it (this added 80 cells from the original).

There are almost certainly ways to make arbitrarily large still lifes. For example, it seems likely that you could make a still life which creates an RCT, does something silly and then cleans itself up.
Also, it might be "fun" to try and create still lifes that synthesize things when hit with a single glider.

If we could make a still life that produces a single glider, that would allow for more things. It is possible to make a G-LWSS seed which could be connected to something:
Code: Select all

Basically this has already found by me (perhaps already by a lot of us) but failed to post it as something useful, and thus no record of this was made so nobody can actually know……
Maybe LifeWiki has some record of this, but since it’s too easy to find they didn’t notice.
