Putting this in sandbox so I have something to link externally. It illustrates how self-organization occurs in a wrapped reversible CA universe. Initially, the 20x20 center box is assigned uniformly with 50% density. If you put it in a larger box, it will generate moving objects.

Code: Select all

x = 100, y = 100, rule = critters:T100,100

However, without the empty space around it, it has to maintain the same density and uniform distribution (because it is reversible and deterministic).

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 20, rule = critters:T20,20

It seems to drop the top left row and column, no matter how I define it and I wonder if that's a LifeViewer bug. In any case, it illustrates the basic point that there is no "emergence" when packed like this.

Update: Here is a 10x10 box in a 50x50 torus that should have a shorter cycle in principle though I'm sure it is still extremely long.

Code: Select all

x = 50, y = 50, rule = critters:T50,50

I see a problem here. Namely these simulations are looped, which means they're artificially stimulated. Without it their lifespan would be considerably shorter.
