(Personal) Redeveloping CA on a desert island

In this thread, I'm going to pretend that I wake up one day on a
desert island with only my laptop but with all CA-related stuff (Golly, apgsearch, etc.) removed, and I want to redevelop CA technology. Essentially this is
this thread but slower and more systematic.
Don't interrupt my storyline; you can start your own thread if you like to.
Rules (for me):
[*] Don't just reconstruct patterns from your memory, rediscover them.
[*] Every "search program" used must have source code publicly available. (I'm going to put them on a GitHub repositry)

If you don't want anybody to contribute, why are you doing this on a publicly editable thread? Wouldn't it make more sense to do this on a static page only you can edit? e.g. in your userspace in LW

Why don't it get locked? And more importantly, why do it here instead in a userspace?

Look at all the "Random posts (<username>)" threads in the Sandbox.
Also, if you want to discuss relevant issues please do not do so in this thread. I'll ask a moderator to move all this discussion to a different thread.
