I doubt that it's a good idea for hasslers pages to even attempt listing *all* hasslers (rather than just *notable* ones, LW:NB). See viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6290 for earlier discussion.

Really, I think grouping by period would be better (well-defined and unambiguous), compared to grouping by "hassled object type" (which can be vague). Create one page for every period that is neither too low nor too high, and then maybe have sections for different types of oscillators.

That's not so bad now, though it still is a little bulky-looking.dvgrn wrote: ↑October 28th, 2024, 3:50 pmJust for a change, a trombone-slide adjustment with a couple of Snarks doesn't have to be painfully long to work:

Still, what should be done in instances like this where there exists a hassler for a specific evolutionary sequence at a certain period, though it doesn't merit placement on the wiki page due to bulkiness. Currently the Century hasslers page suggests no p47 hassler exists.

I think that particular variant should instead be shown in an embedded viewer, immediately after the added sentence, like this:hotdogPi wrote:mention two different placements of eater 1s (I think the infobox should be changed, but I don't want to do that without discussion

The eater 1s can be placed on either side of the blinkers. Placing them on the inside provides a spark with better clearance:[...]Code: Select all

Note that the added sentence mentions "a spark with better clearance", therefore it makes sense to show the phase with the spark in the embedded viewer. Note that that cannot be done in the infobox, as the infobox shows a minimum-population phase, and in this case the phase with the spark isn't a minimum-population phase.

Those viewers are animated (I'm not sure whether the animation helps or distracts in those cases). If the goal is to show the spark, it may be preferable to add a non-animated single-phase pattern.

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
I believe the one in there is one was used for a previous incarnation(s) of the P57 Glider Gun, which has sufficient clearance to be useful and, as far as I know, hasn't been reduced beyond certain welds used in the current version.Vort wrote: ↑October 30th, 2024, 6:53 amGallery on Quinti-Snark page suggests following p3 sparker:Wouldn't it be better to replace it with this one?Code: Select all

So, I would say if it's clearance could be much improved, then perhaps it would be notable enough for mention. Until then, probably not.
EDIT: it seems there were several reductions to that sparker in the past for the p57, some similar to this one, though still of much higher clearance.

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
A significant number of people are interested in such possibilities. It's just that many of those people are busy with something other than "being a LifeWiki editor", and vice-versa, the currently active wiki editors may or may not understand/be interested in these suggestions.Vort wrote: ↑October 30th, 2024, 6:53 am[...]
My previous suggestions got zero response, is anyone interested in these optimizations at all? Should I post more?
Do you think it would be possible to make a stamp collection of some sort, for this specific topic, showing what possibilities exist? Maybe that would have more chances of changing the situation, compared to posting them one at a time.

Unlikely events happen.
My silence does not imply agreement, nor indifference. If I disagreed with something in the past, then please do not construe my silence as something that could change that.

Long story short -- sure, please post more!Vort wrote: ↑October 30th, 2024, 6:53 amMy previous suggestions got zero response, is anyone interested in these optimizations at all? Should I post more?
The general rule of thumb that I use is that if a variant of something is "useful" in the sense of allowing a bounding-box improvement to the glider-gun collection, or something similar where we're collectively tracking bounding-box size ... then it probably can be safely added on the appropriate LifeWiki page, at least to the gallery section of variants.
(Looks like you've used the variant you posted here, just a few hours ago, among other places.)
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
I'm talking not about better p3 sparker in general, but better specifically for quinti-Snark.WhiteHawk wrote: ↑October 30th, 2024, 2:55 pmI believe the one in there is one was used for a previous incarnation(s) of the P57 Glider Gun, which has sufficient clearance to be useful and, as far as I know, hasn't been reduced beyond certain welds used in the current version.

Was quinti-Snark used for p57 gun? I can't find it right away.
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Ah. I thought you were talking about the sparker, and jumped over the part about it being quinti-Snark.

besides in Lifeline and RLE comments, change all occurrences of "gen" on the wiki to "generation"?

Or "tick", when that captures the intended meaning better.get_Snacked wrote: ↑October 31st, 2024, 12:34 pmbesides in Lifeline and RLE comments, change all occurrences of "gen" on the wiki to "generation"?
AFAICT "tick" carries the meaning of "passing from one generation to the next generation", while "generation" is a pattern of cells at a specific time. In a sense, ticks happen "between" generations.

:tick = generation
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Previous discussion of this point can be found here.
EDIT after confocaloid's following post: this still doesn't seem like an interesting topic to get into an argument about, unless someone actually starts substituting "tick" for "gen" in some LifeWiki articles according to confocaloid's theory that "generation" and "tick" aren't synonyms. However, since confocaloid is quoting one side of the previous discussion below, here's what I said at the time:
dvgrn wrote: ↑May 19th, 2024, 10:04 amThe question of whether or not "tick" and "generation" are synonyms ... doesn't seem to need another post from me, since no editing questions hinge on it at the moment. I'll just add a few links here in case there's further discussion in the future: it looks to me more like "tick" and "generation" are synonyms, but that "tick" is more commonly used in some situations and "generation" is more commonly used in other situations.
Usually if "generation" is used in a situation where "tick" is more common, it's readily understood and no one complains that the term is being misused -- example 1, example 2, example 3. Substitutions in the other direction also happen without confusion or objection, though maybe that's even rarer -- example 4 -- possibly partly because the "T = {N}" syntax attracts anyone who might want to say "tick {N}" in place of "generation {N}".

Life Lexicon is focused on words and phrases, sometimes at the expense of ideas behind those words and phrases.get_Snacked wrote: ↑October 31st, 2024, 12:43 pmLife Lexicon says:confocaloid wrote: ↑October 31st, 2024, 12:38 pmAFAICT "tick" carries the meaning of "passing from one generation to the next generation", while "generation" is a pattern of cells at a specific time. In contrast, LifeWiki aims to collect and explain existing ideas and knowledge.
In this case, the difference between 'tick' and 'generation' is important for a Lifenthusiast who is trying to understand things, despite apparently being hard to grasp for a lexicographer who is focused on "common usage" at the expense of understanding:
confocaloid wrote: ↑May 19th, 2024, 11:47 amI posted those specific examples to illustrate the difference between meanings. Here are some previous examples from forum posts by others (I quoted parts that contain forms of words 'tick' and 'generation'):dvgrn wrote: ↑May 19th, 2024, 10:04 amAre there any example uses that bear out either of those examples? [...]confocaloid wrote: ↑May 19th, 2024, 3:09 amI believe the two terms have different meanings. In my understanding, in Life/CA-related discussions the word 'tick' usually refers to a step between two generations of a pattern (for example, going from a phase of an oscillator to the next phase), while the word 'generation' usually refers to just one phase. For example, 'the generation T = 0', 'the tick from T = 0 to T = 1'.
MathAndCode wrote: ↑October 18th, 2020, 1:01 pm[...] Obviously, the eight-tick predecessor that I found would be extremely unlikely to actually occur, but even the six-tick predecessor looks mostly decent, and some variations of that six-cell predecessor that also work, such as 5bo$2bo$b4o$o$b2o$2b2o$4bo2bo$5bobo, look very plausible. Even the seven-tick predecessor bears a strong resemblance to generation thirteen of the B-heptomino, so it's possible that this can be made in a similar way, although getting around the tub could be tricky.Rocknlol wrote: ↑October 23rd, 2021, 5:33 pm[...]MathAndCode wrote: ↑September 7th, 2021, 5:18 pm[...] Here is a version that has the same population and lasts for two generations longer: [...]

The count of results keeps increasing, as expected when evolving the input pattern further, and for the 28-tick descendant it reaches 281.
However, from generation 145 on, the count starts to decrease, and at 251 it drops to 0. This means that there is no 12x12-1G-octohash result for the octomino ash (constellation xp2_yj2552z696ycezy0888y41110s0111zw70ggg07yh696zzybg8gzyb121).

Category:Pages needing cleanup states that "Template {{cleanup}} automatically adds pages to this category", but at the moment (see archived copy) there are excessively many pages in the category without explicit inclusion of said template. Please verify if all of the 1,282 pages in the category are unanimously agreed to "require cleanup to meet LifeWiki's quality standards", or if a bug is affecting common elements of these pages like a pattern template.

It is intentional. Several criteria trigger inclusion of pages in that category.FlutterWithKSparkler wrote: ↑November 2nd, 2024, 11:55 amCategory:Pages needing cleanup states that "Template {{cleanup}} automatically adds pages to this category", but at the moment (see archived copy) there are excessively many pages in the category without explicit inclusion of said template. - Pages where the caption of an embedded viewer contains explicit HTML breaks are automatically placed in category "Pages needing cleanup". As a rule, captions should either avoid forcing any linebreaks (automatic word wrap only), or else explicitly state the intention to enforce word wrap in this specific place by using a template Template:br instead of the raw HTML markup.
- Pages with the "rulespecial" parameter in the infobox (which is deprecated and disabled) specified are automatically placed in category "Pages needing cleanup".
