bounding boxes of spaceships [LifeWiki Discussion; infoboxes]

Post by confocaloid » June 19th, 2024, 10:09 am

Currently LifeWiki does not have a standard for measuring bounding boxes of spaceships. It's unclear/ambiguous what is measured.

There was some prior discussion on this topic (links below). So far, there was no conclusion on what to do. This thread aims to provide the new place to continue the discussion.
There are at least two main unresolved questions,
  1. Should there be *any* standard (within LifeWiki) for bounding boxes of spaceships?
Currently, infoboxes for spaceships (e.g. loafer, Sir Robin, waterbear) include the line "bounding box". Is that line considered useful? Or maybe it would be better to hide that line whenever the pattern is a spaceship?
  2. What are existing possibilities for a clear definition of "the bounding box of a spaceship" that would remove any ambiguity?
There are several possible definitions. Some possibilities were previously mentioned.
Any other thoughts/questions on measuring bounding boxes of patterns within LifeWiki are also welcome.
Just like many other discussion topics, this topic is persistent, so people can chime in at any time in the future if they wish.
