Many of these are approachable with some combination of wildcard init, grid_loop constraint and forbid_grid filter. I'll post them as I complete them...
Thanks for the results and detailed explanations. I also began considering minimal single-phase widths, and I worked through the "easy" speeds with WLS and JLS as reported in this post. However, the c/5 orthogonal searches were taking too long, so I decided to try them using LLSSS. I think I set up the asymmetric search correctly, but please let me know if I made a mistake.

Specifically, There are known period-5 c/5 orthogonal spaceship with a single-phase width of 10, such as this one by Josh Ball which is the shortest known with this property:

Code: Select all

#C Single-phase width-10 (1,0)c/5 spaceship
#C By Josh Ball, 13 Oct 2013
x = 10, y = 38, rule = B3/S23

o$3bo$bo$b5o$4b2o$3bo$4b3o$5b2o!
Therefore I set up my search to look for spaceships with a single-phase width of 9.

I figured that for a front-to-back search I would need five different searches corresponding to which phase was restricted to width 9. For this I used the following constraint files:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5o_w9_1.cstr
| ......WWWWWWWWW...... | .....WWWWWWWWWWW..... | ....WWWWWWWWWWWWW.... | ...WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.. |
$ cat c5o_w9_2.cstr
| ..WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.. | ......WWWWWWWWW...... | .....WWWWWWWWWWW..... | ....WWWWWWWWWWWWW.... | ...WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW... |
$ cat c5o_w9_3.cstr
| ...WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.. | ......WWWWWWWWW...... | .....WWWWWWWWWWW..... | ....WWWWWWWWWWWWW.... |
$ cat c5o_w9_4.cstr
| ....WWWWWWWWWWWWW.... | ...WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.. | ......WWWWWWWWW...... | .....WWWWWWWWWWW..... |
$ cat c5o_w9_5.cstr
| .....WWWWWWWWWWW..... | ....WWWWWWWWWWWWW.... | ...WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.. | ......WWWWWWWWW...... |
I then used the following rlife command for each search:

Code: Select all

./rlife llsss c5-f2b @bg:21 --constraint grid_loop:c5o_w9_N.cstr --filters bcaf
I think a width-21 search is correct in this case, as it's the width of the windows in the constraint files. The longest search was with the second constraint file, which peaked at 10.4GB of RAM usage and took a bit under 5 hours of CPU time (42 minutes wall clock time on the laptop I was using). Here's the longest partial result from that search:

Code: Select all

x = 121, y = 78, rule = LifeHistory

The other searches also completed without finding any ships. Is this sufficient to show that there are no period-5 c/5 orthogonal spaceships with a minimal single-phase width of 9?

Edit: I also ran a set of searches for a single-phase width-16 even symmetric c/5 orthogonal ship (width-18 examples are known). My constraint files were the cyclic permutations of the following constraint file:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5o_w8e_1.cstr
| WWWWWWWWW...... | WWWWWWWWWW..... | WWWWWWWWWWW.... | WWWWWWWWWWWW... | WWWWWWWWWWWWW.. |
I used the following rlife command:

Code: Select all

./rlife llsss c5-f2b @bg:15 --left-edge even --constraint grid_loop:c5o_w8e_N.cstr --filters bcaf
The searches found no spaceships, with this being the longest partial result:

none of the searches took more than 90 seconds. They were probably so much quicker than the asymmetric searches because the overall search width is 12, rather than 17.

I confirm it all for the stated purpose of exhausting single-phase width ships. Specifically I verified:

(*) The principles of the searches. More on this below.
(*) The 5 provided width 9 asymmetric constraints exactly (I wrote mine from scratch, copy/pasted yours, and had the computer verify the text was identical).
(*) The provided width 8 even constraint exactly (ditto).
(*) Both invocations. I again wrote mine from scratch and they were identical except for reordering of arguments and the substitution of wcaf for bcaf. These (wcaf/bcaf) are equivalent here and it's just old habit of mine to use wcaf (which existed first). I confirm that the first asymmetric constraint file, run several W rows past where the filters first start removing state bits, produces identical filter counts and identical col sizes for wcaf versus bcaf.

I did not actually run the searches other than to super duper double check the filter equivalence (I had of course proved the equivalence in my head first, but I consider it generally worth verifying these things empirically as well).

It seems likely you understand the principles entirely and correctly, but I thought it might be worth writing out my reasoning about the five constraint files. Due to WCAF/BCAF, any ship that exists will be findable exactly with its first nonzero W row aligned on the first real W row of the search. For normal searches this is fine and all ships are findable, but for single-phase constraints there are five different alignments between the thin phase and the first W row and so these constraints check each of those separately. An analogous situation occured with the min pop work where the min pop phase could be aligned in multiple places.

An alternative (which would almost certainly perform worse) would be to switch to c5-f2b/W=Y and not enable --wao-tile-error-mask MAX. Then each ship is findable in five different alignments (according to where its first "W row" from W=T got aligned in the first "W row" with W=Y) and you'd only need to run with one specific thinnest-phase-width constraint as any ship's thinnest phase would match it in one of those five alignments.

I gave c/7 min height 1 TB as well and no surprises it did not work out. Height 6 4/7 completed in ~10h and ~740 GB and height 6 5/7 did not complete w/in 1 TB. Longest partial for 6 4/7:

Can the minimum single-phase width c/5 diagonal search (c5d-down) be done with the same setup as the c/5 orthogonal search, or does it require shifting the box of wildcards in some phases to account for the horizontal movement?

Edit: in any case, I don't think I'll have sufficient memory to complete a single-phase width-11 search. There is a known c/5 diagonal ship with a single-phase width of 12:

Code: Select all

#C Single-phase width-12 (1,1)c/5 spaceship
#C By Tim Coe, Dec 2015
x = 12, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
2b3o$bo$o5bo$o5bo$b2obo$3o2bob2o$bo5bo$8bo$b2o$3o$o3b2o$3o$2o7b2o$bo5b
o3bo$b2obob2o2bo$bo4bo$2bo4bo2bo$7bobo$6bob2o$6bobo$7b2o$8bo$8bo$7bo$
8b2o!
Edit 2: the width-9 search using the following constraint file required 17GB of RAM:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5o_w9_1.cstr
| ......WWWWWWWWW...... | .....WWWWWWWWWWW..... | ....WWWWWWWWWWWWW.... | ...WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.. |
The corresponding width-10 search filled 60GB and died. Even if the constraint files should be slightly different, it appears there's no way I can complete the necessary searches to find or prove the minimal width. Keith, if it's not too much trouble can you add this to your queue?

I've started it (EDIT: this was about c/5 orthogonal) and the first phase (of five, as I sketched it) has completed w/in 43.86 GB. I assume one of the later ones will take more.

EDIT: I have misunderstood. The filename "c5o" convinced me you were asking about c/5 orthogonal, but that has a known width 10 result above. I have since decided this must have been about c/5d and it's just coincidence that that file's structure is right for one c5d-down phase as well. This also explains the "even if ... slightly different" which I wasn't sure what to make of. I have killed the c/5 orthogonal searches, sketched the various shifted inputs for c5d-down, and started working on that (I'm going to exhaust thinner widths first I think, hopefully quickly).

Can the minimum single-phase width c/5 diagonal search (c5d-down) be done with the same setup as the c/5 orthogonal search, or does it require shifting the box of wildcards in some phases to account for the horizontal movement?
Assuming you mean what I think you do, namely that some phase has its XY bounding box at whatever width and the rest of the four phases can do as they like, then the setup is similar, but what needs to be done in some phases probably could be called shifting the box of wildcards. My reasoning would be as follows: considering trying to restrict the third generation to width 10, you might write a constraint like (made comically big to make patterns clear):

This would work, but it would be more efficient to enforce the light cone expanding from gen 3 statically. Rather than try to reason about the shift in the wrap from the last generation's future wrapping back to the first generation, I might choose to do this by prepending three pipes and feeding through `pd-fold c5d-down 1` which are, respectively, shifting T coordinates up 3 and effectively normalizing the view so everything is based at T=0 (this isn't what pd-fold is really for, but it can do it and a division of "1" means no change in contents, maybe I should write a separate and explicit normalization tool):

Similar things would have to be done for 3 more phases (the one can be done w/o wrapping issues).

I gave 2c/7 unstaggered min height 1 TB with nothing even close to luck. I believe 8 has been exhausted already but I cannot even replicate that. 7 took ~8h and about 750 GB. 8 did not get anywhere before hitting the 1 TB limit. Longest partial for 7:

I gave 3c/7 unstaggered min height 1 TB without any real luck either. I believe 7 has been exhausted already and that's all I can reach. 7 took ~1h and about 280 GB. 8 did not get very far before hitting the 1 TB limit. Longest partial for 7:

Rather than try to reason about the shift in the wrap from the last generation's future wrapping back to the first generation, I might choose to do this by prepending three pipes and feeding through `pd-fold c5d-down 1` which are, respectively, shifting T coordinates up 3 and effectively normalizing the view so everything is based at T=0 (this isn't what pd-fold is really for, but it can do it and a division of "1" means no change in contents, maybe I should write a separate and explicit normalization tool)
Let me see if I have the process right. Suppose I want to search for a c/5 diagonal ship that stays within a single width-11 bounding box through all of its phases. I presume that I would need 5 different constraint files based on which phase is the "starting phase" such that evolving that phase four ticks keeps the pattern withing the width-11 bounding box.

Suppose I want phase 2 to be the starting phase (with the initial phase being 0). Then I would start by creating the following file, which just has width-11 blocks of wildcards centered within each window, and prepended with 5 - 2 = 3 pipes:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5d_w11_2_cstr1.in
|||| ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |
|||| ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |
|||| ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |
|||| ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |
|||| ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |
|||| ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |
|||| ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |
Then I run `./rlife grid-tool pd-fold c5d-down 1 < c5d_w11_2_cstr1.in > c5d_w11_2_cstr2.in` to get the following file:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5d_w11_2_cstr2.in
|                  |                  |                  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ..WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW.. |                  |                  |
Now I think I need to realign the wildcard blocks so that they are in the same relative position in each window. This can be done by adding a column of periods on the right in the first three windows and on the left in the last two windows. I also prepend with 2 pipes and save this as `c5d_w11_2_cstr3.in`:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5d_w11_2_cstr3.in
|                   |                   |                   | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  | ...WWWWWWWWWWW..  |
|  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |  ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |                   |                   |
Then I run `./rlife grid-tool pd-fold c5d-down 1 < c5d_w11_2_cstr3.in > c5d_w11_2_cstr4.in` to get the following file:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5d_w11_2_cstr4.in
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
I take just one row from this file to make my constraint file:

Code: Select all

$ cat c5d_w11_2.cstr
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
I then run the search with this constraint file as before.

As a test, I ran the five searches after following this process and they seemed to give me what I want. They all ended at w_pos 50 with a VmPeak around 18GB. There were three longest partial results:

Code: Select all

The right-most partial result occurred in three of the searches, with the phase shown above occurring each time as the "starting phase".

I wanted to double-check that 63P5H1V1 is indeed the thinnest ship by this measure, but it has a width of 13, and the first of the width-12 searches that I tried quickly filled 64GB and died. I'm hoping that when you release the bit tree version of LLSSS I will be able to complete the width-12 search.

Yeah, I agree and that is the exact constraint file I produce.

Ah, but I think there is a trick missing here. Just running with WCAF allows a given finite ship to be found in five different phases (a difference between a geometry like c5-f2b and a geometry like c5d-down), and so each constraint file can still find any ship. You could either just run any one constraint file (especially say the unshifted one) or you could do something analogous to --wao-tile-error-mask to force the only nonzero bits in the first W=Y row to be in the fifth generation, splitting up the search and saving memory.

My setup for this would be...

Code: Select all

$ cat W11.in
| ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ |
| ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ |
$ cat W11.cstr0
| ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ |
| ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ |
| ................ | ................ | ................ | ................ | WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW |
$ cat W11-PH02.cstr
| ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ...WWWWWWWWWWW.. | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... | ..WWWWWWWWWWW... |
$ rlife llsss c5d-down W11.in --constraint grid:W11.cstr0:none,grid_loop:W11-PH02.cstr --filters wcaf
...
W11.cstr0 forces only nonzero cells in the first row in the fifth generation, wcaf forces that row in that generation to be nonzero in total, and W11-PH02.cstr forces the width 11 bounding box in five generations starting at the "2"nd (file names were zero indexed so this is what a human might call the third).

Running this way I got VmPeaks more like 6 GB (although this is sort of variable due to binary size, thread count, etc.).

That's going to be some combination of pretty tricky or a long way off. The new bittree storage engine (called "MDSE V2" in code) is reasonably close to shipping (more results from further benchmarking soon), but just as a stripped-down "llsss-mdse-v2" main that doesn't have much in the way of features, e.g. no WCAF. I sketched some more code changes to get a direct inclusion of WCAF compiling, but having anything resembling those nice, big, dynamic many-feature commands is still a distant future and is going to take a ton more work. I pushed a cut of this hack to codeberg as 20251216-mdse-v2-wcaf-demo-01 if you want to do some pre-pre-incredibly-pre-alpha testing. On that branch the "llsss-mdse-v2" subcommand is set up to run very basic searches but hard-coded to include what for the "llsss" subcommand would be "--filters wcaf". If you do anything with this I would make sure to run any searches alongside their old-school "llsss" equivalents and verify the numbers all match as far as the old code can be made to go.

Okay, let me see if I understand you correctly. Are you saying that there are the following two options for the c5d-down geometry?
  1. Run a single search just as I did above (no need to run a separate search for each phase).
  2. Run a separate search for each phase, but include the `grid:W11.cstr0:none` constraint in each case (thus saving memory)
I was a bit suspicious when each search seemed to terminate at basically the exact same depth, and three of the searches had identical partial results out of phase with each other. But then the fact that I got two substantially distinct longest partial results made me wonder if it was mere coincidence.

Could this memory-saving trick (or something like it) be applied to the c/5 diagonal single-phase width searches as well?

Yeah, exactly. Maybe I should be thinking about growing something for WCAF like --wao-tile-error-mask rather than writing these hacky constraint files by error-prone hand.

Yes and in my cut of c/5d single-phase searches I did this. I haven't gotten around to posting it because there's just been so much writing already these last few days and I've been putting it off. The very shortest version is width 11 exhausted at ~71 GB VmPeak.

If you try anything with the MDSE V2 WCAF stuff definitely update after I have posted this as the first version I pushed definitely had some bugs. The version I just pushed is verified to get identical answers for e.g. c3-f2b @bg:10.

I ran c5d-down searches for single-phase width 11, as follows:

Code: Select all

$ cat W11.cstr0

| ....................... | ....................... | ....................... | ....................... | ....................... |

...
$ rlife llsss c5d-down '@bg:23' --constraint grid:W11.cstr0:none,grid_loop:W11-P05.cstr --filters wcaf &> W11-P05.log
...
W11.cstr0 plus wcaf forces the pattern to be nonzero in the first W row but only in the last of five generations. This forces each finite ship to be findable in exactly one phase. Then the five W11-PNN.cstr files each force one of the five generations to be width 11 and hint to LLSSS that the pattern will stay within the resulting light cone.

That's going to be some combination of pretty tricky or a long way off.
It's a moot point in this case, because your alternative setup allows the search to finish with a max VmPeak of about 19GB. Here's the longest width-12 c/5 diagonal partial result (w_pos 57):

Code: Select all

x = 101, y = 58, rule = LifeHistory

The final unknown up to period 5 in this new table is the potential existence of a (2,0)c/5 single-phase height-9 even-symmetric spaceship (your new 2c/5 ship quoted above is height-10).
I got this done, although it was a mess. I did the same sort of trick with a wildcard start...

Code: Select all

|  .....YYYYYYYYY....... |  ....YYYYYYYYYYY...... |  ...YYYYYYYYYYYYY..... | ...YYYYYYYYYYYYYYY...  | ..YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY..  |
|  .....YYYYYYYYY....... |  ....YYYYYYYYYYY...... |  ...YYYYYYYYYYYYY..... | ...YYYYYYYYYYYYYYY...  | ..YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY..  |
...and splitting files on first wildcard repeatedly to remove all-zeros and until they were small enough to finish in 60 GB. Even so 6 files split all the way (fully hard-coded first two rows) required more than 60 GB to get through at the end. I verified very carefully that all the saved logs completed (contain "Done") and that they cover the complete tree of 2^65-1 nonzero first rows. Total of successful logs (didn't save failures) was ~60h and the biggest maxed at 118.68 GB VmPeak. The longest partial in any of these was:

Code: Select all
