Each glider needs 2 xWSS to get duplicated, so that leads to 48 xWSS, not 24, and x5 helix would save at least 8 xWSS, not 4. However, you're right that spaceships on the other side are built simultaneously, so they don't affect the length of the caterpillar that much.
