There's a mistake in the synthesis: the snakes change their orientation between these two steps:

14G xp5_69arahrrharaic (EDIT on Feb 21: originally 16G, but two gliders are unnecessary)

Going back to school, I'm caught in LWTDS. For my 900th post I'll write about my horrible attempts in synthesizing Metamorphosis II.
It's a compact p60, and injecting the two LWSSes/gliders is problematic for a synthesis apprentice. Anyway the first half is easy:

Code: Select all

x = 122, y = 160, rule = B3/S23

Doing the other half while putting in the LWSS pair is difficult, due to the timing:

For completeness, I decided to check out the various non-trivial (but boring) interactions between the new P16 and some other small period oscillators. There appear to be three ways of sparking it with a figure 8. The last two could easily be synthesized by standard techniques, but the first needs a way to edge-shoot the figure 8. From the catagolue soups, it seems like most natural figure 8s arise from a LOM+house collision, which leads to the similar LOM+honeyfarm mechanism in the middle synthesis, reducing it by one glider. (The right synthesis is already optimal).

Unfortunately, this mechanism doesn't work for the left form. The first C1 soup uses a different mechanism, which does work, and can be injected in either of two phases. It's based on a pi+herschel+junk collision; unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out how to get those pieces (or anything similar) to come together. Any ideas?

Seven gliders via the fourth Boring P24 C1 soup: ...
Thanks! In addition to making this one form possible, this converter also reduces by one
about half a dozen other boring-but-nontrivial figure-8+plus+other oscillator syntheses
that required an 8-glider figure-8. It also allows synthesis of the trans form of the
Tumbling T-tetson (from 18 gliders). I'm sure this can be reduced; there has to be a
way to make the traffic light from less than 7 gliders!

Which means a) synthesise_patt_v1.2.py needs updating, it should include more 3G collisions cosisting of 2G constellation + G, and b) catagolue needs updating, preventing attempts to reinvent the wheel. Currently I am combing the Soup search results thread, and I was astonished by this severely overlooked 18G unicycle recipe:

I like this one, because it suggests a neat 6-glider synthesis:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

o!
There is a remote possibility that the LoM + beehive combination could be synthesized with 3 gliders, but I won't hold my breath.

It manages to reduce the synthesis of unicycle to 18 gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 60, y = 56, rule = B3/S23

By the way, can we synthesize this?

I really hope this is not true, but no synthesis is stored in lifewiki, catagolue, or Mark D. Niemiec's page, and searchng in the forums returns no results. So after much fiddling about, here's a suboptimal 19G candelabra recipe:

Here are three. I synthesized the first on 2015-09-13, based on a reaction found by Bullet51, the second on 2016-10-07, based on a predecessor found by BlinkerSpawn, and Extrementhusiast synthesized the two-rotor one on 2015-12-04.

Is there a <6G way to convert a tub to bun in the second row?
Also, the glider that converts a blinker to a block in the third row is invalid - it would have crashed into another blinker.

Very nice! The only error I noticed was that there are 85 gliders rather than 95. Even better!

Can someone figure out how to get Catagolue to accept this RLE?

There's a glider that interacts with the remaining soup at generation 229, probably making its submission to catagolue problematic.

Actually submitted just fine, just had to separate the steps further:
