And that explains why the repeat time of the StateInvestigator bumper is 34, and SI bouncer is 22.

That's a 180-degree reflection reaction, though. And we can't use two copies of the mechanism because that reduces to this:
2(8n+4)=40m+5
One side will always be even and one will always be odd. :(

A two-glider collision can provide the bouncer's spark, reducing the minimum period to 22.

Code: Select all

x = 64, y = 66, rule = B3/S23

For completeness, fake p38 and p41 oscillators can also be found in the jslife collection (osc-supported).

There is also a self-sustained periodic syringe, but here we are entering the realm of obfuscated code:

Is there a sparker that supports the Snark? I was able to hook up a block factory, but I suspect that there is a better oscillator.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Syringe as switch

A gap in the right glider stream will switch it off, and a gap in the left stream (or a suitable additional glider in the right stream, or anything else that deletes the beehive) will switch it back on.

Of course there cannot be consecutive gaps, or gaps in the left stream first.

We don't actually need the syringe, we just need the pi:

The H-to-pi can be flipped (p107).

And you can of course make the pi from 2 gliders, with a repeat time of 78.

Incidentally, here's another way of sparking a bumper (the spark is actually among the examples I posted):

Thanks for the 2glider bouncer spark. This collision works with bumpers too, in various ways:
Is there a sparker that supports the Snark? I was able to hook up a block factory, but I suspect that there is a better oscillator.
I don't know if this is of any use:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 32, rule = LifeHistory

Also, a Herschel can turn a glider from the inside:

There are several glider-turning reactions that involve a Herschel and/or 1 or 2 incoming gliders. I never posted them, I don't think they are important.

A quick answer after a few minutes of searching:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 30, rule = LifeHistory

I supported that with a block factory, but can a spark replace the block?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

The last one almost has a decent repeat time (50). If you have a better way of cleaning up the messy reactions, let me know. There are probably several more dirty solutions like these. I'm not sure there is a clean solution, since the Snark eater is complex, and was found using a search program. The block factory is probably your best bet.

It's possible to stabilise each end of the wick with a single p41 glider stream:

If there's a way to coax gliders out of the p41 wick (e.g. from finding a p46-gun-style head-on interaction between two copies of the wick), then it should be possible to create a closed p41 oscillator (and gun!) by means of the stable 135-degree MWSS-to-G converter (which works at p41).
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

How would one line up the gliders to create MWSSes?

Technically the first one is only a predecessor to an oscillator.

Yes, Pentadecathalon and Octagon 2.

The two different ways to connect these p41 oscillator monomers (without or with beehives) give coprime separations of 32 and 33 cells, respectively. Moreover, the beehive connection allows an adjustable phase to be incorporated. This means that with enough monomers, you can get arbitrary offsets and phases, so there are no annoying restrictions.

In terms of the global structure, I can envisage two long well-separated parallel horizontal wicks, which synthesise four streams of MWSSes (two leftwards; two rightwards) in the space between them, which are then deflected to support the ends.

What remains is to work out exactly how to construct the MWSSes at p41. The standard 3-glider synthesis is too slow, but maybe there's a usable alternative synthesis?

First of all, we should figure out how to get gliders out in the first place! :P

well, I guess no other 3-glider synthesis exist, but there is several 4-glider synthesis, but 1 glider is always colliding with the produced mwss at p41; that being said, the following alternative does actually work:

Code: Select all

x = 183, y = 185, rule = B3/S23

175b2o$177bo!

I also do not see anything that produces more glider than it consumes... There might be way to get a 3glider to mwss via the following, but these p41 "sparks" are very picky, feel like one would need to consisder all combination of p41 position pair, and insert a miracle glider that fix the wicks and produce something of use, that's a significant search space but still...
