c/3, I think, or rather 5c/15. So the answer is ... maybe?

It could become a tagalong, if a 5c/15 spaceship is ever found that provides the right dying sparks in the back -- there are lots of options that would support that as a back end:

Offhand I'm not seeing how it would be likely to be a spaceship engine on its own though.

We're a long way from being able to hunt effectively for 5c/15 spaceships with our current search tools. The period is way too high. And the support doesn't look like it would work with a lower-period spark.

I would suspect that such behavior is the result of other applications' behavior with reduced available RAM, rather than zfind's behavior at high widths.

Could big a possibly support a tagalong? I think it might be possible because I found a glider collision with its back end that uses its sparks

There certainly are such things. My JLS-fu isn't very good, and asking JLS for symmetrical tagalongs with ON cells on or near the axis and two rows behind the base of the A ... immediately returned with "0 solutions".

But ON cells farther from the axis quickly turned up solutions like this:

The second one from the right is the shortest that JLS could find at that width; below that it returned zero solutions fairly quickly again. The rightmost tagalong was found by widening the search area by two cells while shortening it by one cell.

No luck connecting them to a back corner yet, although I only tried a very little and only for the best looking one. 4c/8 is really quite painful.

I also have some ideas about trying to find a level back with a very thin connection to itself (and thus better hope of connecting to a back corner). Searches in progress, TBD.

Agreed! There must be some solution more amenable to 2c/4 connection. I had something similar with the chicken wire agar, if you remember.

Ordinarily the way to find out whether something is known or not is to check the jslife collection for those periods. So first you have to find the periods. The three smoky ships above are p12, p24, and p48 respectively.

Sokwe maintains a Github repo with sometimes-updated jslife-moving stamp collections. Here are the ones for p12, p24, and p48.

It looks like smoky spaceships aren't really being collected at the moment, for any of the three periods. For example there's a Schick engine in the p12 stamp collection but no modifications of it. There are a lot of p24 rakes and puffers shown, but no p24 spaceships based on Schick engines. I think that's deliberate, because there would be so many of them, with sizes very similar to what you could get by modifying one of the existing rakes or puffers.

Similarly, there are ways to get p48 without adding a second Schick engine. For example, you could add just one *WSS to suppress the output of one of the p48 rakes in the stamp collection.

The "Forward Rake" is a lot larger than p48 forerakes already in the p48 collection. It should be possible to find thousands of other examples at similar sizes.

The p24 backrake is similar. There doesn't seem to be a reason to prefer the new rake to the south, below, to the known rake to the north:

The p12 backrake might be worth adding to jslife-moving, though I'm just guessing here -- Sokwe will know better what the current standards are for adding to those stamp collections. Before posting more rakes along these lines, it's probably a good idea to do these kinds of comparisons with existing rakes. If there's no size or population improvement over what's in jslife-moving, then there are probably lots of other candidates with the same size and same period.
