Isn't life itself useless? Universal constructors can't construct everything. They can only construct everything made from a certain subset of objects, selected so that the objects in that subset are sufficient to make a universal constructor (e.g. gliders, eaters, reflectors, duplicators) With these, they can make copies of themselves. There are still many things (e.g. spaceships, oscillators, still-lifes) for which no glider syntheses are known, so there is no known way to make those from universal constructors either.Kiran wrote:When you think of it that way, what are universal constructors useful for? Theoretically, yes. However. what is interesting about them is not everything that they can construct, but what they can construct that is useful, and what they can PROVABLY construct that is useful. (While "useful" can be a sbjective criterion, it certainly includes at least all components needed to make the universal constructor itself).NoLongerBreathedIn wrote:Universal constructors can construct anything that gliders can.
