Isn't it really better classified as a crystal ? That is; a pattern that grows in a regular way toward a spaceship stream. Indeed, a completely new type of crystal, a very scarce category of patterns.

EDIT: WRONG :evil: . Driven by enthusiasm. It's more like a fuse. Crystals keep on being a "rara avis"... :roll:

177925-gen 20-cell "methuselah" that apgsearch classified as yl256_1_-10_c86a11b3c92660a6ca3e0336c9386b7c:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
24bo$24b2o$24bo2bo2$25bobo$26bo5$15b2o2$3o13bo$17b2obobo2$19bobo!
It produces an LWSS. Attached is a population plot (which I thought would look more exciting but I'm attaching it anyway)

EDIT 2022-03-20: I noticed there was a ship in the puffer output at (592, 577) that gets annihilated in the original methuselah. If you restore that ship before it interacts with anything else, the methuselah actually lasts 10x as long, making 2 more LWSSes and stabilizing at generation 2305992 with a cycling population. The last object created is a westward LWSS at (10212, 10305) right near the end.

Does this count as a Methuselah due to the switch engine eventually being stopped from behind, or not a true one due to being based on infinite growth, similar to ark pairs or crystal-based growth that just stops producing novelty?

It's not counted because it is basically cheating. normal methuselahs that aren't based on linear growths don't last that long, while those that is based on linear growths being stopped can take quite some time so if they do count the other ones will just lose completely. So these don't really count.

At what point is it stopped from behind? I've run it to over 800 thousand generations. It appears to be a two-spaceship ark heading northwest shooting slightly irregular but repeating streams of gliders northwest, occasional glider bursts southwest and northeast, and periodic BSEs southeast - making it a quadratically-expanding MMS breeder.

77551enpassant is referring to dani's 177925-generation methuselah, not the RLE in the signature.

Ah, yes. This is one reason I hate RLE patterns in signatures - it's sometimes hard to tell when message content ends and signature begins, and one often ends up running signature patterns as if they were part of the content.

I'd say that it absolutely does count as a methuselah for the reason that it's stopped from behind.

A cool pattern I discovered. :cool: ...
This is the one known fundamental P20 oscillator in B34/S34. These can be daisy-chained diagonally to create tilings that are equivalent to polyominoes. Some of these can be synthesized from gliders, although there is currently no known way to insert one oscillator between two others (e.g. to complete the fourth corner of a block).

Here is some more information about this rule: https://conwaylife.com/ref/mniemiec/rule34.htm

I know; that made it harder to quote. :) But I figured that the information would be useful in any case.
