The block can be replaced by a glider from either direction, although the cleanup is a bit messier. The whole thing can be done completely one-sided from 5 gliders, although there is probably a 1 glider cleanup somewhere that might reduce it to 4.

It turns out the same mechanism is already used by one of the 4-glider integral syntheses - a glider into a B-heptomino makes a pi + debris block that cleans up the back, and the B-heptomino's first block just happens to be in the right place.
