All matter of useless Life patterns go here. For example, the following is a methuselah that takes 946 generations to stabilise:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 3, rule = B3/S23

Have fun.
Nothing in this universe is useless.

Nope. I don't agree with you, Boka.
Yes, everything can be useful if you know how.

So why do they throw methuselahs (<20000gens) into the rules?

At one time, methuselahs that ran for 20000 generations were the state of the art. As time progressed, and apgsearch was set up to recognize methuselahs, and new methuselahs with longer periods started being found, ones with lower periods became less and less interesting. However "interesting" is typically a very subjective quality that is best left to human filtering, rather letting machines do it.

Yep. Dean Hickerson stated that this pattern is an interesting methuselah:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 23, rule = B3/S23
10bo$9bobo5bo$9b2o6b2o3$bo$3o16bo$7b2o6bo2bo$8bo6b3o8$5b2o3b3o$4b2o4bo
2bo$4bo5bo3bo$14bo$10bo3bo$10bo2bo$10b3o!
but it is obviously not.

1. You are contradicting yourself. You said, for example, that the B34c/S23 c/7 is completely useless and we should not synthesis it etc.
2. At some point of view, everything in the CGoL universe is useless.
3. I still don't see how "everything can be useful if you know how". That sounds like "there is actually a p19 oscillator/a c/18 spaceship, the empty space".

Happy Birthday @ Hunting !

Post by otismo » May 29th, 2020, 3:45 am

@ Hunting

I was "hunting" your last post

so I could wish you

Happy Birthday !

this is an interesting thread

one may never know when something might come in handy

that which was useless yesterday

may become indispensable tomorrow

in CGoL many are "expert" in the ASH ( still-life, oscillators, space-ships and higher-ordered constructs made-up of these )

but I have always felt that the "real show" is the FIRE and so spend much of my time in CGoL watching the fires burning...

re-visiting this pattern from your post above :

EDIT ( persists 18,692gens and emits 43 Gliders )

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 23, rule = B3/S23
10bo$9bobo5bo$9b2o6b2o3$bo$3o16bo$7b2o6bo2bo$8bo6b3o8$5b2o3b3o$4b2o4bo
2bo$4bo5bo3bo$14bo$10bo3bo$10bo2bo$10b3o!

I do not know why Dean Hickerson thought that it was interesting - but DH had a lot of collections of interesting stuff -

I find that pattern interesting because of the way the firecloud "reburns"; that is to say, re-kindling its own debris/ash;

indeed, the fire extinguishes only after it definitively leaves the main debris field. This fire, like so many others, seems

to contain the seed of a periodic pattern that is begging to be isolated and stabilized - and we will never know it until

someone does - and I used to collect interesting fires like these but ran out of time - "One man's trash is another man's

TREASURE" !

Happy Birthday !

Nice edgy LWSS! It's not formed with the usual G+preblock method.

Incidentally, I think that large eater on the top is the first method of cleanly deleting the TL predecessor (or block, depending on an extra eater placement) that would otherwise form from this factory. I think that part goes in a different thread.

Well, you did not get the latest collection (which just got updated because... bandersnatching reasons), and it is in there at last.

Just a minor idea to extract Herschels from switch-engine based puffers.

I don't know of one, unless you count things like this:

A custom Corderpuffer releasing Herschels on one side could certainly be engineered, but without a lot of search time they'd probably be fairly big and awkward. Might not happen unless someone comes up with an actual good use for those output Herschels.

Welcome! Just a tip, if you put the RLE inside code tags, it'll produce a "show in viewer" button that allows people to view the pattern without having to copy it into an external program:
