Not necessarily useless; it might be possible to use it as part of a P5n mechanism (e.g. like some kind of pre-pulsar shuttle or traffic jam) to remove one side of a forming traffic light. I know there are already some mechanisms that will do that, but it's possible that this might fill a niche somewhere.
Ordinarily, that would be useful, but it's outclassed by the fumarole because the fumarole fits in a slightly smaller bounding box and is not destroyed if the traffic light does not form with perfect timing.

useless partial:
That's a nice R→R+H conduit, (The R→R version is known, but I don't think that any version was previously known that also allowed extracting the Herschel.) although there's not much room to add the initial R except by hitting a still life with a glider. I know that a loaf can serve as a one-glider seed for an R-pentomino, but deleting one loaf cleanly without affecting the other one looks challenging. I suppose that someone will eventually find a version that works, though.

Has anyone looked for a syringe replacement that takes advantage of the fact that a beehive can serve as a one-glider seed for an R-pentomino? I think that this might be worthwhile for three main reasons:
  • An R-pentomino can be converted to a B-heptomino or Herschel relatively quickly and easily compared to a ∏-heptomino because it spawns them naturally.
  • Beehives are common, so transparent beehive reactions are feasible, such as in the boojum, the rectifier, and the original century eater in the bistable switch.
  • An R-pentomino naturally splits into two active regions early on that don't interact with each other until about 80 generations later, so it should be easy to use one to export a signal and use the other to restore the beehive.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Look at the boat (or rather, what becomes of the boat) starting at generation 128.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
14b2o$14bo$bo10bobo$obo9b2o$2o5$14b2o$8bo5b2o$7b3o$7bo!

Edit: I just realized that it's not just some random collision of a glider with a boat and block but rather a wing plus block reaction, so it doesn't seem so useless now.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

This discovery is off-topic here! Congrats!

Edit: I have a vague memory of seeing something similar posted on the forums. Is this pattern known?

Too unfamiliar to count really. There is also a more common triple-boat one. (I wonder if that can be converted. <s>M&C do your thing.</s>)

Here it is.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
bo$2o$o2bo$b3o$2bo!
I've seen it at least a couple of times, so it might be worth looking for conduits for.
bubblegum wrote:

I wonder if that can be converted. <s>M&C do your thing.</s>
And apparently, I'm becoming predictable.
I wasn't able to extract the obvious ∏-sequence, but I did find this.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 6, rule = B3/S23
6bo$5b2o$5bo2bo$6b3o$2o5bo$2o!
That is the latest that I have even seen something enter the Herschel sequence. This could be great if we figured out a way to clean it up: We wouldn't need to worry about that pesky block in conduits like Bx222 and Bx125. Unfortunately, this is the best that I've found.

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
bo11bo$b3o7b3o$4bo5bo$3b2o5b2o7$6bo$5b2o$5bo2bo$6b3o$2o5bo7b2o$2o13bobo$17bo$17b2o!
Here's another way to get a Herschel sequence from something besides a B-sequence.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
bo$2o$o2bo$b3o$2bo!
[[ PASTET 25 PASTE o! -3 7 ]]
A slight modification results in a century sequence.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
bo$2o$o2bo$b3o$2bo!
[[ PASTET 25 PASTE o! -2 8 ]]
This makes lumps of muck.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
6bo$4b3o$3bo$3b2o3$bo$2o$o2bo$b3o$2bo!
This makes another of the same methuselah.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 26, rule = B3/S23
o$3o$3bo$2b2o6$5bo$4b2o$4bo2bo$5b3o$6bo9$3b2o$4bo$b3o$bo!
This makes a B-heptomino.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 28, rule = B3/S23
o$3o$3bo$2b2o6$5bo$4b2o$4bo2bo$5b3o$6bo13$6b2o$6b2o!
Further conduits accepting or forming this region should likely go here.

Edit: The object actually enters the Herschel sequence earlier, but its first block is suppressed.

Also unfortunately, the blocks are necessary because a permanent fishhook would interfere with a future iteration of the conduit. This region does seem worth investigating more, though. If you see any way to make it from an active region already used in conduits, please post it here. I've seen it at least twice in the past, but I wasn't keeping track of it then.

Here is a weird block reaction that (I think) is technically not transparent.
