Not necessarily useless; it might be possible to use it as part of a P5n mechanism (e.g. like some kind of pre-pulsar shuttle or traffic jam) to remove one side of a forming traffic light. I know there are already some mechanisms that will do that, but it's possible that this might fill a niche somewhere.

Ordinarily, that would be useful, but it's outclassed by the fumarole because the fumarole fits in a slightly smaller bounding box and is not destroyed if the traffic light does not form with perfect timing.

That's a nice R→R+H conduit, (The R→R version is known, but I don't think that any version was previously known that also allowed extracting the Herschel.) although there's not much room to add the initial R except by hitting a still life with a glider. I know that a loaf can serve as a one-glider seed for an R-pentomino, but deleting one loaf cleanly without affecting the other one looks challenging. I suppose that someone will eventually find a version that works, though.

Has anyone looked for a syringe replacement that takes advantage of the fact that a beehive can serve as a one-glider seed for an R-pentomino? I think that this might be worthwhile for three main reasons:

• An R-pentomino can be converted to a B-heptomino or Herschel relatively quickly and easily compared to a ∏-heptomino because it spawns them naturally.
• Beehives are common, so transparent beehive reactions are feasible, such as in the boojum, the rectifier, and the original century eater in the bistable switch.
• An R-pentomino naturally splits into two active regions early on that don't interact with each other until about 80 generations later, so it should be easy to use one to export a signal and use the other to restore the beehive.

That is the latest that I have even seen something enter the Herschel sequence. This could be great if we figured out a way to clean it up: We wouldn't need to worry about that pesky block in conduits like Bx222 and Bx125. Unfortunately, this is the best that I've found.

Also unfortunately, the blocks are necessary because a permanent fishhook would interfere with a future iteration of the conduit. This region does seem worth investigating more, though.
