Attached is a list of the numbered still life remaining in the stamp collection with their canonical representation using the notation from apgsearch. I'd appreciate if someone did a spot check, but I believe I got the correspondence right. I've assumed that all except #767 fit in a 15x10 bounding box. I'd like to include the sof representation too, but I've been doing those manually up until now. Is there a script for that somewhere?

Nicely done! Yes, I checked every fiftieth still life (line number 1+50N, N=0..6 in the text file) and they were all correct. So... are you plotting now to make a script to look through all the search*.txt files in an apgsearch progress folder to see if any of these objects are in there -- or shall I do that?

Unfortunately until apgsearch is updated to save soup IDs for rare still lifes in progress/search*.txt, we'll have to re-run the search with the @ROOT and @NUM_SOUPS information to find the actual soup. I suppose that's a hint that I should be doing lots of million-soup runs instead of a few 50M soup runs...!

I've only ever written a script to go in the other direction, from SOF to RLE. Koenig's code wouldn't be very Golly-compatible, so it's probably simpler just to start with the SOF spec and write a quick RLE-to-SOF or cell-list-to-SOF converter.

Probably it's worth running a good sample of HK's Object Database through a double conversion, SOF-to-RLE-to-SOF, just to make sure there are no tricky little details getting missed. There are a few subtle points, like the proper way to code multiline gaps in SOF and how to find the SOF canonical format (is it just lexicographical sort order? I forget).

My memory is now very vague, but I think there's at least one detail of the spec that is not in fact implemented in whatever code produced the Object Database. Maybe it was the multiline-gap encoding...? I can go back and check later this week if anyone is interested. Why the interest in representing things in SOF, exactly? Just to be able to do a quick lookup on pentadecathlon.com?

EDIT: P.S. This discussion doesn't belong under the now-14-page "Synthesising Oscillators" thread any more than the 17-bit still life discussion did. I hereby nominate Extrementhusiast to start another new thread (yes, I'm trying again to avoid getting stuck updating the stamp collection in the first post...!)

Thanks for checking. It's unlikely I'll get to this soon, but if you haven't I'll probably give it a go next week. My knowledge of Python is sufficient to know that there's an elegant, simple way to process the text files, but not what that way is!

I also added an @RULE line to the header in my derivatives of apgsearch to identify the rule used for the search.

Indeed, I have been manually determining SOF to be able to lookup objects on pentadecathlon.com
Most useful references I found were:

I think there are a few typos on that page, but it's clear enough
The multiline-gap encoding is indeed not implemented in the database on pentadecathlon.com
Probably not an issue for decoding and encoding, only an issue for the equivalence check you suggest.
BTW, sorting is only lexicographical for specific cases. Bounding box, cell count and spaceship direction are also used as explained on linked page.

Hmm. Elegance isn't really my strong suit either, but I should be able to manage something simple and ugly, anyway. I'll be happy to tackle that if you can re-run your existing conversion script against the new index pattern that Extrementhusiast has just posted.

A very good idea -- I didn't think of that (because of my obsessive focus on B3/S23). Might be worth posting the actual code in the apgsearch thread by way of feature request, since it's still officially in beta status.

EDIT: Something like this should do the trick -- v1.1 is now patched up to report the search parameters needed to re-run the search.

P.S. Not too surprisingly, no useful 18-bitters were found among the search reports on this computer -- I had just done a few small searches here. I've been doing multi-million-soup searches on a quad-core system at the University, though, so we'll see if anything turns up tomorrow...!

I'll locate the actual soups for these objects again over the weekend. I'm running my hacked version of apgsearch that saves soup numbers for all rare still lifes -- otherwise I'd have to make custom changes to the dictionary to assign a high point value to these objects. [EDIT: Well, no, I guess I wouldn't -- the unhacked script will still list the first occurrence in the census HTML, and there's probably only one soup for each of these anyway.

Come to think of it, I'll adjust my hacked script so that it writes all those soup numbers to the progress files; at the moment they're only in the census HTML, which is overwritten by the next run of apgsearch.

This is the only remaining one of the objects from Achim Flammenkamp's paper "Natural oscillators in Game of Life" that required more than 1 glider/bit to synthesize. From a predecessor in one of the above soups, this can be reduced from 29 to 12 gliders. (I am sure that the cleanup can be done with only one glider rather than two; I only explored 10 lanes, and found several that leave only one or two nearby still-lifes. There are likely others that leave nothing, which would make this 11 gliders rather than 12.)

Excellent! I was already starting to get burned out looking at synthesizing soup results yesterday (mostly with tantalizing but frustrating non-results), and seeing that there were over 20 soups for that one object alone, I stopped after the first 3, settling for the low-hanging fruit.

I had believed my list to be complete, except possibly for exotic oscillators that have never been seen before, which are probably out there (e.g. there were around ten new 20-bit ones that were found by computer search that I had missed when I had made that list in the '90s). Where did you first see this oscillator? I didn't see it on pentadecathlon.com's lists (which I have been using to list the few exotic oscillators from 21-25 bits, beyond the myriads of trivial obvious ones).

The second last step in the bottom synthesis destroys the still life instead of converting it. I assume this is a typo?
