Glider-spaceship interactions

Post by codeholic » September 29th, 2013, 3:08 pm

Is there a known reaction to turn a spaceship salvo into a spaceship moving in an orthogonal direction, triggered by a glider?

Code: Select all

         / glider
        /
ss     L
<-----*
      ^
      |
      |
      | ss salvo

I'm not sure, if it helps, but here are couple of ways of getting r-pentomino, herschel and pi from colliding a glider and a spaceship salvo. All reactions leave the spaceship lane quite quickly, which allows quite a dense salvo.

Code: Select all

I've got another challenge: turn a forward glider salvo into a forward glider salvo flying in the opposite direction by a spaceship salvo.

Code: Select all

     7
    /
   /
  *
  ^Г
  | \
  |  \

The best I've got so far is this G+4SS->G. Unfortunately, because of the damn glider, released by a herschel, one cannot use it with low-period salvos. Can anyone do better?

Code: Select all

x = 157, y = 199, rule = B3/S23

Here is a salvo found by oblique, that does the work:

Unfortunately, it has 2 HWSS that are a little bit harder to synthesise than lighter spaceships. I wonder, if there are similar 3-spaceship salvos made only of light- or medium-weight spaceships.

Yes, something like that. Besides the reaction rate there is also another important parameter, namely glider salvo shift, and it affects how tight the glider salvo can be, if the velocity of the object emitting gliders increases. E. g. your reaction can bounce only every 4th glider in the salvo with as fast glider source as in my last post:

Code: Select all

x = 147, y = 23, rule = B3/S23
14b2o$8bo5bobo$7b3o4bo$7bob2o$8b3o$8b2o4$79b2o$79bobo$79bo16bo$6b3o86b

I'm currently doing a gencols search for G+3SS and I'm looking forward to some interesting results. It looked promising in some preliminary searches I did.

I see what you mean, the glider salvo can't be any tighter even though it looks like there is some space.
The reformed glider needs to advance forward more while being formed.

EDIT:
This reaction is interesting because the glider reflects a different way if advanced 3 tics.

Code: Select all

Forward, or to the direction opposite to where gliders come from, see oblique's reaction. I didn't actually realize it before I saw it :oops:, that's why I tried B-heptomino-based reactions (see my own attempt).
