In Life, patterns cannot maintained a sustained expansion faster than c/2 orthogonally, or c/4 diagonally. To move (2,1)c, a pattern must move two spaces forward and one sideways (2+2+2=6 generations minimum), or one forward and one diagonally (2+4=6 generations minimum). Many other Life-like CAs permit diagonal movement of up to c/3 (which would permit (2,1)c/5), but Life does not.

By the way, excellent work on the 3c/7 almost-spaceships! I don't recall seeing anything remotely close at this velocity before. The fact that such reactions can come so close to working strongly suggest that successful complete spaceships of this velocity, and likely also of comparable sizes, are highly likely to exist.

There may certainly be longer partial patterns for this width.

Paul Tooke may have some better partial patterns and has likely put some serious search time in on this problem.

My only idea is to take a partial pattern with a small width, like the partial I posted near the front where the blinkers are, and try to extend the pattern in different directions. I have not had any success with this.
It may also be useful to learn more about how the c/7 diagonal ship was discovered.
