A glider is generated as well.
By adding a beehive the remaining mess turns cleanly into a second glider.
The incoming spaceship can be any LWSS/MWSS/HWSS thus converting to LWSS at 90 degrees:

Has anyone made a stable reflector for LWSS?
Nice! The two output gliders make it easy (well, relatively easy) to rebuild the still lifes. There are some known converters that work for either LWSS and MWSS, but handling *any* of the standard spaceship types is unusual... I have a vague memory of some "prior art" in this area, but I can't find it right now. More later, maybe --
Existing stable technology for reflecting an LWSS would involve pairing up an LWSS-to-glider converter with a glider-to-LWSS converter, something like this:
Code: Select all
#C small LWSS-to-G plus Calcyman's minimum-area G-to-LWSS
x = 209, y = 234, rule = B3/S23

No doubt something a good bit smaller could be designed, using a Herschel as the intermediate stage instead of a glider. But these are all going to be fairly slow and sprawling designs, and which design you pick depends a lot on what exactly you're using it for.
For example, the above takes a very long time to produce the output LWSS, so if you needed a quick reflection, your rebuildable "one-time" reflection reaction might be just the thing. But I suspect it would come out about the same as the above in terms of the total bounding box or recovery time.
For cases where you can get an extra signal from somewhere else to pre-build or rebuild the sacrificial still lifes, here are a few other known LWSS reflectors. The cheapest one is two blocks plus an eater catalyst:
Code: Select all
#C One-time LWSS turners: Brice Due, 8 October 2007
#C The eater can be replaced by a block
x = 70, y = 83, rule = B3/S23
