Really interesting! Not sure what practical use it might have that differs from a more typical sparker — the spark isn't really robust enough to be likely to withstand multiple interactions. I would imagine this to be the first of its class, at least at low-to-medium period — hopefully not the last!

As a side note, the rightmost segment of the rotor can be stabilized on its own, making a fairly small billiard table which may or may not be known:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

RLE
That's present in jslife's o0007-bil.lif, and I actually selected that completion manually after a certain point in the search.

Here's a slightly more robust p5 hw emulator:

Code: Select all

Edit: And here's a p5 MW volcano, smaller one in progress.

Period 8 oscilliator:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 18, rule = b3s23
3b2ob2o$3b2ob2o2$b9o$o9bo$b3obob3o$3b5o5$3b5o$b3obob3o$o9bo$b9o2$3b2ob

It seems that the oscilliator must be known, but I'm unable to find it in previous collections.
Still drifting.

I found an almost oscillator that looked like this

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
2b2o3b2o$3o5b3o$o9bo$b9o2$b9o$o9bo$3o5b3o$2b2o3b2o!
but I lost it

For some strange reason it doesn't seem to be in jslife or the jslife-osc-supplement, but it is in DRH-oscillators (Golly Patterns/Life/Oscillators/DRH-oscillators.rle)
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

In the future, edit your posts, by the way.

Also don’t blank your posts unless they are offensive or deserve blanking for some other reasons. You don’t have to blank a post like the one above since it could be used for future reference, however slim the odds are.

EDIT: I believe you meant to have this pattern in your G loop post:

Please post this in a relevant thread, for example Thread for basic questions. If you can't get the Python script posted above to work, there's actually a Lua script that comes with Golly which you can find at Scripts/Lua/giffer.lua, which should work assuming your version of Golly is up-to-date.

EDIT: Please also read the forum rules; if you need to follow up on your previous post in a topic it's generally better to edit your original post rather than making a new one.

My vague recollection is that somebody found a stationary fencepost for ... something-or-other interesting ... in the past few years, but I can't find the reference, and based on my searches so far I don't think it was this wick. P12 searches are still very difficult. Or can you get away with just p6? I'm definitely not one of the experts on this topic.

All I remember offhand is Sokwe's c/5 stabilization from 2013
That post only shows Hartmut Holzwart's stabilization (mine are two posts above). A more complete survey of those c/5 wickstretchers is given here.
dvgrn wrote:P12 searches are still very difficult. Or can you get away with just p6?
Indeed, finding a p12 "source" for this ant-like wick is probably out of reach with current technology. I am not currently aware of a p6 source, but I suspect one could be found with some effort.

Maybe the stationary fencepost in this wickstretcher:

Code: Select all

#C Stretcher for a p6 wick, Paul Tooke, Sep 2004.
#C Stationary fencepost by Jason Summers and
#C Matthias Merzenich, Jan 2013.

Bullet51 found a stationary fencepost for the other side of this wick in 2016 (see here). I know that Josh Ball (velcrorex) has found some interesting fenceposts to various wicks over the last decade, but I don't have immediate references.

Cross-posting from here, a Rich's p16 on tumbler is a 50p112 (note gen 46):

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 13, rule = B3/S23

Similarly, Rich's p16 interacts with twin bees shuttle forming a 62p368 (note gen 30~37):

Period 3 oscillators are extremely plentiful and are very easy to find. They are rarely worth noting unless they have some particularly useful or notable characteristics (e.g. easily accessible sparks, cheap synthesis, occur commonly in soups, etc.)

Al Jolson's two-block hasseling mechanism can adapt to Merzenich's p31:

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 39, rule = B3/S23
7b2obo2bob2o$2o4bo2bo4bo2bo4b2o$2o5bobo4bobo5b2o$8bo6bo6$8bo6bo$2o5bob

o6bo6b2o$2b2o5b2o6b2o5b2o$8b2o2b4o2b2o$10bobo2bobo!
Why do we need to mention "but p14 (by hitting the sides of the pentadecathlons with 34P14 shuttles) is not possible" in Al Jolson's wiki page?
EDIT: Oh I understand. That sentence needs some new wording.

This mechanism can work with any period 9 or higher oscillator with a sufficiently remote domino spark. It works for pentadecathlons, and also snackers. Oddly, it does NOT work for tetradecathlons, because the phase-shifting process intrudes on the reaction.

This should also work with any period 5 or higher oscillator with a sufficiently remote domino spark. It works for pentadecathlons, snackers, and tetradecathlons, but not fumaroles or heavyweight volcanoes. Some of the large P5 or higher domino sparkers might work.
