So, it's not considered as a new oscillator ? Atleast edit the washing machine page to include this variant. I don't have editing powers yet :(

Well, these are casing variants which are quite trivial, as opposed to bushing variants which are more interesting and might be notable enough for the wiki.

A variant might be particularly notable (compared to other variants) because it is small, or because it has a cheap synthesis, or because it has an interesting synthesis, or because it illustrates some relevant idea that is not illustrated by other variants, or for whatever other specific reason. But obviously one cannot list all stator variants, since there are infinitely many.

Either you ignored my point or I didn't phrase it clearly. Potato posted a bushing variant, but you posted casing variants (of Potato's variant).

Snakepit is the same as Fore_and_back and yet has an entirely different page for it.
Yeah, I'm not sure why that is. Same with eater plug and great on-off, but at least those have things like commonness info.

In several recent posts you've said things like this -- essentially, that you think it's a good idea to make a new LifeWiki page for a newly created p2 oscillator.

This is a actually big part of the reason why you haven't yet been "trusted" on the LifeWiki. We can't safely do that until it's clear that you understand that newly created p2 oscillators should not have their own LifeWiki pages, something like 99.99% of the time. If you started creating new pages along these lines, then very likely they'd only have to be deleted later -- because most p2 oscillators are definitely not notable.

Please have a careful look through the LifeWiki:Notability page.

The general idea is that any time it is possible to very easily generate a million different examples of a category of pattern (such as "p2 oscillator") then the individual million examples are not going to be notable. In practice we can't add a million new articles to the LifeWiki -- something would probably break, and even if it didn't things would quickly start looking very cluttered and it would be hard to find the interesting stuff.

To avoid that, we use the notability guidelines to help decide what makes sense to add to the LifeWiki, and what doesn't.

... Again, welcome to the forums! At this point we're trying to get you past the very common "overenthusiastic edits" stage mentioned in LifeWiki:Notability, that new forum users quite often go through.

There are exactly 6596 21-bit period 2 oscillators, determined by exhaustive computer search. (That's as high as anyone has actually counted so far). The reason that there are so many is that in periods 2 patterns, every cell can only be influenced by cells no more than 2 cells further away. This means that all period 2 oscillators are formed from a series of overlapping 5x5 tiles. There are a total of 2^25 such tiles possible, but only a tiny fraction of them are actually viable parts of period 2 oscillators.

With still-lifes, it's even worse. I.e. there are 273188 21-bit still-lifes, and 35422864104 34-bit ones. Since each cell is only influenced by immediately adjacent cells, all still-lifes are formed from overlapping 3x3 tiles, of which there are only 512 (and only a small fraction of those are viable). E.g. ignoring rotations and reflections, I believe that this set of 51 (hand-generated) tiles can yield all still-lifes.

Code: Select all

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
... ... ... ... ... ..o ..o ..o .o. .o. .o. .oo .oo .oo .oo .oo o.o
... ..o .o. .oo o.o .o. o.. ooo .oo o.o ooo .o. .oo o.. o.o oo. ...

... ... ... ... ... ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o ..o

o.o o.o o.o o.o o.o oo. oo. o.o o.o o.o o.. o.. o.o ... ... ..o o.o
.o. .oo o.. o.o oo. ..o .o. .o. .oo o.o o.o ooo oo. o.o ooo ooo o.o
Because of this, there's "nothing new under the sun" with regards to still-lifes, unless some particular still-life exhibits some unusual property (e.g. it occurs naturally from soup, or can be easily synthesized from gliders, or it can be proven that it CAN'T be synthesized from gliders, or it can be used as some kind of eater/rock/reflector, etc.)

Even though the possible tile set for period 2 oscillators is much larger, the number of actual viable ones is much smaller. I.e. note the much smaller number of period 2 oscillators compared to still-lifes of any given size. So the same notability criteria apply here; i.e. the vast majority of larger period-2 oscillators are basically uninteresting, as they are all necessarily made of the same well-known pieces.

It's like building objects out of Lego - there are infinitely many things you can build, but only a very small number of pieces to build them with.

Easily a million, but really unless you pick a particular bounding box size, there isn't an upper bound.

As mniemec says, there are 6596 p2 oscillators just with a cell count of 21. Keep adding cells and you'll keep getting more oscillators -- some with the same rotors of course, but new ones with bigger and bigger rotors as you have more cells to work with. Have a look at Phoenix_1#Extensions to get the general idea -- but that's just the small subset of p2s where the cells all die in every generation.

Are you saying there are 2^25 possible period 2 oscillators and period 2 rotor configurations ? I haven't found this on wiki yet and you say you add higher period oscillators like period 17 or period 23, they must have 2^10000 possible rotor configurations. Why add them ?
No. There are 2^25 (including rotations and reflections) possible 5x5 tiles of Life cells, period. Only a tiny fraction of those have the required property that the central square oscillates at a period 2, including stability, based on the its 2 surrounding layers of neighbors, which are all that can possibly influence it - and of those, only a smaller fraction would permit similar period 2 oscillation in all of their immediate neighbor cells, when overlapping with other similar adjacent tiles.

For period 3 oscillators, you would need to have 3 layers of contributing neighbors, giving 7x7 tiles, of which there would be 2^49 possible ones. Using this method becomes wildly impractical as periods increase, but it's quite reasonable for still-lifes and period-2 oscillators - and you can see similar behavior with period-3 oscillators, even though enumerating those tiles would be pretty impractical.
