I have now looked through every C1 diehard in Catagolue that lasts 1100+ ticks (currently 90 of them in total). I noticed six of them evolve into the same sequence that lasts 1065 ticks, which is the generation 3 of a diehard I posted in this thread on 11th August 2022. Here are the soups:

This was mentioned on Discord but doesn't seem to have been posted here yet:

A queen bee pair (xp30_ccx8k2s3yacooogzy3103yac7663y133) occurred naturally in a C1 soup found by Charity Engine on December 19, 2022. Advancing one of the queen bees by two generations gives a Gosper glider gun. So close!

I went through List of oscillators with 3 to 16 cells and looked at the Catagolue pages of oscillators that hadn't occurred when it was last checked.

The attribution page is empty (as seems to have been occurring a lot on Catagolue as of late), but xp2_0g4j04g53z32x3 has a C2_2 occurrence, which is unusual because it has C2_1 symmetry. Moreover, it appears in ash far from the centre, enough so that the same hashsoup in C1 also produces it.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

boooobbboooboooo$
obobbobboobboobo$
oobbbbbobbobboob$
bbboobbbobbobooo$
oboobobboobbobob!
Should the fact that there exists a known value that can be hashed to yield a C1 soup be mentioned in the article (ie. in a footnote)? I suppose it is similar to whether G1 occurrences ought to be accepted (being that both this and those are found by non-exhaustive heuristics but would be natural if the hauls containing them were simulated in C1), Rob's p16 is listed as being natural.
The boat tie pentapole has also occurred in C1.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
oboobbobobooboob$
ooboobbooooooobb$
bbobbbooobboobbo$

ooobbobbobooboob$
booooboobbobbooo$
oobboobboobobbbb$
oobooboooobbobbb$
oobbbbbboobbbboo$
bobbobbbbobobboo!
hmm (being that I have made a simulator that I've used for Catagolue analysis already, perhaps I ought to make it check patterns' occurrences in non-conducive symmetries exhaustively)
That concludes my post (I hope you liked it)

There was also another common pattern among the 90 diehard soups in C1 that last 1100+ ticks. Four of them evolve into the following pattern that lasts 1089 ticks:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
3b3o2$7bo$7bo$7bo$2b2o$bobo$o$o2bo$o$bo$2bo3bo$3b3o6b2o$12b2o!
In all four of the soups, the two blinkers and the block evolved later and from different things, so the similarities between the soups might not be immediately obvious. The active object is the result of a honey farm predecessor colliding with another thing. It might have a smaller form.

Here are the soups:

Rob's p16 finally showed up in C1, along with an integral in the same soup:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
7o3b2ob2o$ob3o3b2o2bo$obo4b2o2b2ob2o$2o3b2ob2ob2obo$6o2bobobo2bo$6obo

3bob2o$3b3o5bo$3obobo2b2o2b2o$7obo3b3o$3o2bo3b3o$b2o2bo4bob3o!
It has 6 G1 occurrences and 3 invalid "stdin" C1 occurrences which were backed out of the main census, so that's why it says there's 4 there.

I tried putting something together this morning, and got a 10G recipe. The red patterns are the same three active reactions as above, just eight ticks later:

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 48, rule = LifeHistory
27.A$25.2A$26.2A10.A.A$38.2A$4.A34.A$5.2A$4.2A2$22.2D$20.5D$19.D4.D$

41.A!
There were only five 3G matches for the top object, and all but one had gliders coming from improbable directions, and the last one wasn't edgy enough.

However, after a double-check of the improbable ones, a couple of them turned out to be workable after all. Rob's p16 cost is now down to single digits!

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 48, rule = LifeHistory
27.A$25.2A$26.2A2$4.A$5.2A$4.2A2$22.2D$20.5D$19.D4.D$19.D2.2D$19.D$

6.2A$6.A.A19.3A$8.A19.A$29.A10$40.3A$40.A$41.A!
The central glider can be moved back to the blue-and-white position, and it will still work.

On March 4, 2023, Charity Engine found a C4_4 soup that produces 4 copies of the asymmetric oscillator 14P2.4:

This is the first occurrence of 24P4.2 (Edit: I mean 14P2.4) in a soup of any symmetry. It is one of the last two known 14-cell oscillators for which a C1 soup has not been found (the other being octapole).

Wow! (Don't you mean 14P2.4, rather than 24P4.2?). Unfortunately, the way it forms doesn't seem as if it would provide a useful path to a cheaper synthesis.

I have now finally looked through all C1 diehard soups in Catagolue that last between 1000 and 1099 ticks. There are currently 415 of them. I have already analyzed and written posts about the higher bins. I found four different long lasting diehard patterns that each occured multiple times among those soups. In this post I'm going to show those patterns (two of them are reposts) and tell the indexes of the soups that evolve into them. I'm not going to put the RLEs of the soups here in order to keep this post's length reasonable.

Five of the soups evolved into the following pattern that lasts 1065 ticks. It has also occured six times so far in the 11h bin. Soup indexes: 95, 106, 158, 227, 270.

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
8b2o$8b2o$17bo$4bo11bobo$4obo11bo$3o3bo$3bobo!
Four of the soups evolved into the following pattern that lasts 995 ticks. You can flip the left hand side upside down and it will still work. I found and posted a 3x14 grandparent to this in February. Soup indexes: 69, 195, 232, 319.

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
o9bo$4o5b3o$o3bo6bo$2b3o2b3o$8b2o!
Three of the soups evolved into the following pattern that lasts 708 ticks. The thing in the lower right is generation two of the wing. Soup indexes: 97, 145, 311.

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
21b2o$20bo2bo$21b2o3$18b3o$18bo2bo$18b2o2bo$20b2o2$3o!
At least two of the soups evolved into the following pattern that lasts 825 ticks. Soup indexes: 63, 130. This one also seems to be decently common in the 9h bin. It's in seven of the first one hundred soups there.

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
11b2o$11b2o3$6b2o$6b2o6$2b3o$13b3o$o5bo5bo3bo$o5bo4bo5bo$o5bo4bo5bo$
11bo5bo$2b3o7bo3bo$13b3o!
And also a quick disclaimer: the soups didn't always evolve to the exact forms that I showed above. There can be dying sparks, small extra objects that get deleted by sparks etc. However these didn't affect the patterns' evolution in an important way.

I was running my Catagolue census-sorting program on the textcensuses of oscillators of specific periods in b3s23/all-soups for the respective Category:Highly volatile oscillators pages (which are very nice, if you haven't read them :-), and came upon xp8_y3g0111gg0gg1110gzgx4apgje034303430ejgpa4xgz3xcaa4y94aacx3zsx35ligy7gil53xszy0259gc70cis0sic07cg952zy5888y1888 (found by Charity engine on 2023-05-18 at 21:54:30 UTC), a gutter-symmetric one which would be perhaps a useful sparker if not for the low clearance from the blinkers (which can be replaced with tubs, as in xp8_y1252zcc0f94kg45r4czy43omgow252zy566), and just barely makes the cut on account of its volatility of 248/304≈0.815. Its minimal monomerisation by bounding box and population is xp8_y27zcc0f94kg45r4czy43omgow222zy566.

Code: Select all

x = 47, y = 29, rule = B3/S23
9b3o5b3o15b3o4$7bo4b2ob2o4bo11b2o4bo$6bobo2bobobobo2bobo10bobo2bobo$5bo2b2obobobobob2o2bo6b2obobob2o2bo$4bo4bo2bo3bo2bo4bo5b2ob2o2bo4bo$5b2o2bo9bo2b2o13bo2b2o$o5b3o11b3o5bo9b3o5bo$o27bo17bo$o4b2o15b2o4bo11b2o4bo$4bo2bo13bo2bo14bo2bo$4b3o15b3o14b4o2$4b3o15b3o14b2o$4bo2bo13bo2bo14b2o$o4b2o15b2o4bo$o27bo$o5b3o11b3o5bo$5b2o2bo9bo2b2o$4bo4bo2bo3bo2bo4bo$5bo2b2obobobobob2o2bo$6bobo2bobobobo2bobo$7bo4b2ob2o4bo4$9b3o5b3o!
Sorry if they are trivial (being that one octant, assuming gutter preservation, would require a triangular search space of only 55 cells), but such highly-volatile things have been increasingly hard to come by as of late so my expectations have diminished somewhat.

Really the lower bound would be much higher than that, because if one soup exists then there are probably gajillions of variants of it. Here's a 20x18 sample that can probably be packed into 16x16 with some effort:

I believe the general opinion is that we would start calling the 2-engine Cordership "natural" -- using the specific artificial definition of "natural" that we've got on the LifeWiki. Seems like it would maybe still be an engineered spaceship, though.

"Naturalistic" is something else again -- a category of rules that only shows up as a channel on Discord. And "natualistic" has a surprising number of hits on Google, but they all seem to mean "naturalistic".

I find it strange how a smaller spaceship like a 2-engine Cordership or Pufferfish spaceship is in the same category as an enormous ship like the Caterpillar or Centipede; I feel like these should be two different categories, like “Engine-based spaceships” and “Crawler-ships”… What is the consensus on that?

EDIT: in OCA, there are also replicator-based ships, or “rep-ships”. Though I feel like that might be a special case of “Engine-based spaceships”, since a replicator is kinda like a puffer whose output is itself.

I'm not tempted to claim that there is any consensus on this, or any likelihood of producing one -- but personally I think it's totally true that

- a Centipede is a crawler-based engineered ship;
- a two-engine Cordership is an engine-based engineered ship;
- a two-engine Cordership has a lot less engineering in it than a Centipede.

The Spaceship article talks a little bit about those two major subclasses of engineered spaceships -- based on crawlers vs. based on "stabilised puffer engines".
