By the way, when you found the transparent fishhook reaction with the two-glider octomino, why were you searching for O-accepting conduits in the first place? If it's because you have conduits that make clean two-glider octominoes, then dvgrn, I, and probably others would be interested in seeing them.

I haven't commented on that discussion because I have thoroughly forgotten what the CatForce search on the octomino was for--I do not even recognize that transparent eater. I think it might have had to do with catalyzing two-glider collisions in general to see if anything rare and useful happened?

I think that we should investigate the two-glider octomino because it seems to have a lot of uninvestigated potential. For example, here is a mostly-complete way to turn it into a century (with a demonstration of connectability attached):

B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

Wow, that's not just a new record -- I think it kind of blows all previous records along these lines out of the water. Even the "kaleidoscope" symmetric-soup variants of this kind of crystal growth/decay behavior (of which we had a lot of examples even a year ago, haven't checked recently) tend to survive only 5 million to 25 million ticks. I think the outlier was 64,935,262 ticks. But that was a symmetric soup, where this kind of thing happens much much more frequently.

There's a particularly big sudden jump in the crystal's active location due to something that happens at (620170, -619980) @ T=50892900, though the new active site ends up being 500-ish cells northeast of there.

I've wondered for a while now - were such a soup to produce a glider that goes back up to the switch engines in question (assuming that's possible in the first place), and prevent them from growing the population further at all, would this constitute a proper mesuthelah or just another one of these cases here?

A: Only sockpuppets ever agree (with their controllers) about the precise definition of "methuselah".

My personal opinion would be that if one of apgsearch's random soups managed to shoot down its switch engines after a long delay and stabilize its population, that would constitute a bona fide methuselah (which would probably break the longevity method by quite a large margin).

It's pretty certainly possible for a soup to naturally spit out a pair of switch engines that produces backward gliders, and the switch engines can be destroyed by one or more forward gliders with exactly the right timing. Some mechanisms along those lines exist and are required for RCT cleanup, among other things.

It's just really really I-don't-know-how-unlikely for the two switch engines and the gliders to both be generated by the same soup, and for the backward glider stream to just happen to not drill through the soup's debris before anything interesting happens, and for a spontaneous eater not to show up on the glider stream, either.

I don't agree. Crystal-based weirdness is just a totally separate category from the settling time for regular random ash, which seems to follow a nice predictable probability distribution.

Both that and the previous xs15 had at least one stretch of diagonally connected cells. Is this a characteristic of most of the remaining xs15s? Those regions do seem relatively unlikely to form naturally.

Yeah, those are difficult to form naturally. A good way of coming up with one of the rarest n-bit still lives is saying "n-bit snake", at least for suitably small n (read: this will hold for all n up to about a few million or so).
