Has anyone sorted out a number of gliders for a complete synthesis? The Glider synthesis entry on the LifeWiki has an awkward question mark in the summary table.

I managed to get rid of the still life on the right. The three marked gliders were found via a script with the goal that they should make the red cells after 18 generations. The other two gliders were found manually. Patient tweaking of these may result in more reduction...

Now if a synthesis for edge-repair spaceship 1 would just appear in the New Year's stocking -- or wherever such things appear -- then I could stop getting confused about which small hard-to-tell-apart c/3 spaceships are synthesizable and which aren't.

I got my initial synthesis of xs15_0j9eg8oz121 direct from Catagolue's shiny new "Obtainable from here" link, and I jumped there directly using biggiemac's second script.

I was so proud of my efficiency and up-to-date-itude for a moment there (sigh)... and now I'm back to my comfortable out-of-date feeling again.

So now chris_c's synthesis-generator data must be in need of an update -- or at least my packaged-up-to-16-bits edition of it, but it looks like the Github site hasn't seen any changes since May.

Yeah, I had just used the SL on the right as a makeshift way to create a certain boat predecessor, so that was the more logical choice to eliminate. (I had found the left half of the synthesis pretty much immediately.)

I got the synthesis of that p3 ship down to 26 gliders and repeat time 201. As far as guns go, 201 is not so appealing but there is a nice Herschel factory at p204 and p210 is also small.

I'll certainly admit that some salvos are more suitable than others -- but these look fairly easy. Only the triangular group of three gliders in the southwest look at all tricky to build into a gun, and even that is just a matter of building the rightmost two gliders from one side, and the remaining three from the other side.

I suppose it's not suitable for a p197 gun, since the eater synthesis can't be moved later without disturbing the two-glider domino spark synthesis on the right. But that's okay. There's fairly general agreement that the cost is more important than the repeat time, so you optimize the number of gliders first and then worry about making the recipe faster if that's possible.

This recipe may be hard to improve, unless there's some other still life or two-glider active reaction that can stand in for that eater at the top...? That search may already have been done, since the eater is in gmc_nxtman's 14-glider synthesis.

It doesn't look as if the five-glider synthesis of the block+beehives constellation can be used with the new recipe, because the yellow glider below would have to pass through the constellation. You can't move the construction back to let the yellow glider go by first, because there's not quite enough room for the two gliders in the NE to pass through the SE salvo:

Aha, nice! As usual, the only thing better than being proven wrong is, um, being proven wrong twice.

The 19-glider recipe also happens to be two gliders closer to a two-salvo recipe. Probably that's not something anybody else cares much about, but I always liked the way these things looked. I guess it's the same 21-glider cost with the new 18-glider recipe, just with one more kickback.

Well, I'm easily impressed by spaceship syntheses. While I'm wishing for horses, I'd also like to expand the block-and-beehives plus maybe eater-at-the-top constellation to make an N-glider seed for a copperhead or fireship. With N as small as possible but I'm not too picky.
