This is probably better for the Elementary Conduits thread, but here's a simple C-to-G that isn't present elsewhere. It won't be particularly useful until there's a conduit that this actually attaches to, though.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

So, I'll have a little comparison here.

Perhaps it's boring.
Edit: It only reduce the repeat time by 2.

Fixed! bandersnatchy G8-to-H...
Works with this 2x h-to-H! (only one works flipped too)...
Awesome! Definitely a frumious discovery. It's great to finally have some kind of use for those random output G8 glider pairs. Might make an Fx119 into a handy Herschel signal splitter, for some kind of slow self-constructing circuitry where repeat time isn't an issue.

As an additional celebration, here's a welded form of the second G8 output that almost doesn't work in about three different ways, but then there turn out to be welds available to solve all the problems:

Code: Select all

x = 116, y = 163, rule = LifeHistory

Kazyan found this, which reflects a glider at the cost of a block:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 22, rule = B3/S23

dvgrn was able to hook up a block factory to it:

Code: Select all

However, if there's no block, the glider would blow up the conduit (eater is on wrong lane), and an eater 2 wouldn't fit.

I think it's useful enough to go here, because compared to this old pattern, this has a smaller bounding box and accepts a glider directly instead of having to convert it to a Herschel first, and I think this is the right thread for this kind of stuff too:

Yeah, I don't entirely disagree, though it's a bit more marginal than it looks. Probably a better comparison would to a demultiplexer plus an eater, which produces either nothing or a glider, just like this new mechanism... but if you get a glider output, it's a much easier to use 90-degree glider.

I just wrote some more about this back on the Useless Discoveries thread:

Nice! I actually think this is better than that old other thing, the bounding box is much smaller, and it accepts a direct glider input instead of a Herschel!
I guess it depends on what it ends up being used for. The new SET+TEST mechanism has an output lane that overlaps the input lane, so for most applications you have to spend a Herschel-based edge shooter to get the TEST glider in. Even a Bandersnatch/rectifier combination won't quite work:

Probably for most purposes, a simple demultiplexer with an eater behind it is easily going to win the SET+TEST elegance competition. I shouldn't even have mentioned that other old eater5-based mechanism. It was just the similarity of the presence of a block causing an output glider that made it seem vaguely relevant.

Somewhere sometime this new thing will probably come in handy for a staged-recovery cleanup, though. Maybe there's something in the Spaceship Eaters thread where you have an extra glider coming out, and you just want it to bounce the signal back as fast as possible and kill off some piece of junk so that the next spaceship can come in. A direct glider bounce like this is much faster than anything you can do with Snarks, let alone Herschel-based stuff.

It looks promising because the boat is placed beyond the reaction envelope before it's placed, making it accessible to something to turn it back into a beehive, and because one of the intermediates is an R-pentomino, which the Life community has experience dealing with.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

I've taken a look at this using CatForce. For up to two common catalysts, I was not able to find a restoration for that bait beehive. There is also not much room for Bellman to operate on the residual boat if you don't add any catalysts otherwise.

A three-catalyst search with simple catalysts, such as a block and an integral or irroed dock (symmetrical variants of the eater 1), may find something--but it doesn't seem super likely to me.

Thank you for trying. Also, I might work more on finding conduits and converters soon. Do you have any recommendations for where I would be the most useful?

That's a good point. Here's what I think would be useful that I haven't seen so far:
Why aren't there any conduits or convertors that directly create the bottleneck that occurs after a Herschel has created the first natural glider? That way, people could use Herschel conduits without having to worry about the first natural glider hitting something. The bottleneck looks like a cross between a B-heptomino and a century, so it shouldn't be too hard to make, even though paths besides a first natural glider leaving a Herschel.

Re: The Hunting of the New Herschel Conduits

I recall some discussion about that bottleneck a while back--we were calling it H' at the time, but the discussion never got anywhere.

As for how to find conduits, the Herschel mines are pretty well-explored, but there are ways to break into new veins. The first thing to do is to pick out some common ways the Herschels are perturbed, and then you can try some of the following:

1) Do catalyst searches on that perturbation with 3 or more catalysts. Wait a long time for the search to finish, then sift through the results for situations where the Herschel is doing something you've never seen before. We have a few programs to try catalyst searches like this: CatForce, catgl.py (golly script), and ptbsearch come to mind. I prefer CatForce, but CatForce really struggles when you put in a lot of complex catalysts that cannot be transparent, because it doesn't have any a priori knowledge of how a catalyst is 'supposed' to work. (this is a feature, not a bug, and is intended mostly for Spartan objects that can become unexpectedly transparent.) The list I feed into CatForce is attached to this message.

2) Use Bellman to find a custom catalyst specifically for a reaction site, and hope that new avenue moves the Herschel in ways that you can then whack with a typical catalyst searcher. Bellman takes a while, though. It's the dynamite of Herschel mining.

3) Add a fancy Bellman result to a catalyst search of your choice, and hope it's cross-applicable to some other place in a reaction. I've tried this a bunch, but successful transplants are rare.

4) Look in collections of already-known conduits for avenues that do not appear to have been thoroughly explored. For example, I'm currently checking out this one, which only has a single (EDIT: three) H-to-G as far as I'm aware, even though it looks like there's potential for more:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
17b2o$17bo$14bo4bo2b2o$14b5obo2bo$2o18b2obob2o$bo10b4ob3o3bo2bo$bobo8b
o2bobo3b2obo$2b2o18bob2o$22bo$21b2o5$2bo$2bobo$2b3o$4bo!
5) Learn how to manually add highly versatile catalysts like blocks, eaters, ship+eater combos, the R49 catalyst, and tubs, etc. to promising reactions that you find.

6) Throw out all of my advice and do something your way, because we need new ideas if we're going to hit new jackpots.

EDIT 2: Here we go. Known lane and different timing, I think:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 35, rule = B3/S23

I'm pretty sure that Gustavo made a cheat sheet for some catalysts, but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone have a copy, or did I just remember wrong?

I'm somewhat surprised that no direct conduits showed up. Maybe it's time to try again if enough years of Moore's law have passed.

6) Throw out all of my advice and do something your way, because we need new ideas if we're going to hit new jackpots.
One of my strengths seems to be thinking of creative ideas. I'm probably going to try creating conduits for objects that seem useful (so I can contribute useful conduits) but probably haven't been explored much (so I find conduits that aren't already known). For example, I found some convertors for R−B.
MathAndCode wrote:

In the meantime, I'm going to look for converters accepting R−B. Here's one that almost produces a queen bee (although the block would have to be restored later or replaced with another catalyst.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 7, rule = LifeHistory
4.D$4.D.A$2.ACAD$.A2CA2D$AC5.D$2A2.D.2A$.2C3.2C!
#C [[ T 4 PAUSE 1 ]]
This makes a B and a ∏—although chances are that only the ∏ will be useful.

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 13, rule = LifeHistory
2.2A$.A.A12.A$.A9.DC2A5.3D$2A8.DC3A7.D$10.ACD7.3D$10.2AD$11.2A2$19.2A$8.2A9.A$9.A10.3A$6.3A13.A$6.A!
#C [[ T 78 PAUSE 0.7 T 86 PAUSE 0.7 ]]
These outputs definitely aren't useful all at once (although each could be useful separately).

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 28, rule = LifeHistory
13.D$12.3D$12.D.2D5$12.D$12.3D$13.D2$16.D.2D$16.3D$17.D2$2.2A$.A.A13.A$.A11.3A$2A10.4A$11.2A$11.2A$12.2A3$9.2A$10.A$7.3A$7.A!
#C [[ T 130 PAUSE 0.5 T 134 PAUSE 0.5 T 136 PAUSE 0.5 ]]
Luckily, it can be modified, but the block is put back in the wrong place.

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 28, rule = LifeHistory
13.D$12.3D$12.D.2D8$23.2C$23.2C4$2.2A$.A.A13.A$.A11.3A$2A10.4A$11.2A5.D$11.2A4.3D$12.2A3.D3$9.2A$10.A$7.3A$7.A!
Here's another modification with an extra blinker.

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 28, rule = LifeHistory
13.D$12.3D$12.D.2D5$26.2A$26.A$24.A.A$24.2A5$2.2A$.A.A13.A$.A11.3A$2A10.4A$11.2A$11.2A7.2D$12.2A5.2D$20.D2$9.2A$10.A$7.3A$7.A!
And this one creates an extra beehive.

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 29, rule = LifeHistory
15.A$13.3A$3.2A7.A$4.A7.2A$4.A.A$5.2A2$13.2D$14.2D$14.D7$2.2A$.A.A13.A$.A11.3A$2A10.4A$11.2A$11.2A$12.2A3$9.2A$10.A$7.3A$7.A!
#C [[ T 106 PAUSE 1 ]]
Here's another partial R−B to queen bee catalyst.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 19, rule = LifeHistory
6.2D$2A3.D.D$2A2.D$4.D2.D$4.D$5.D.D$6.2D$15.A$11.3A$10.4A$9.2A$9.2A$10.2A3$7.2A$8.A$5.3A$5.A!
#C [[ T 64 PAUSE 1 ]]
(I also found some conduits for what I thought was a syringe intermediate, but it turns out that a spark interacted with it after the seven-cell bottleneck, so I deleted the post.)

Yes; I currently only understand how three catalysts (fishhook, Eater 2, and Eater 3) work, so my conduit-building abilities are currently very limited.

Edit: I'm sure that a converter that makes the top R is known, but what about the bottom R?

Code: Select all

Another edit: Here are some partial convertors for another pattern that seems potentially useful but not extensively researched.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 18, rule = LifeHistory

There is also R conversion potential.

[Catalyst file attachment]
Thank you for providing your catalyst files for CatForce. (Should save a nontrivial amount of work when I get back in)

You can spare a separate eater2 in this catalyst if used:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
9bob2o$7b3ob2o$6bo$6bob2ob2o$5b2ob2obo$11bo$5b2ob3o$5b2obo2$2bo$bobo$o
2bo2b2o$b2o3b2o!
This variant also catches table-on-table catalyses, but I see you put your tables on the next catalyst.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
o2bo$4o$6bo$7o$o$3b4o$3bo2bo!
Speaking of which, how does this catalyst work?

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
3bob2o$b3ob2o$o$ob2ob4o$bobobo2bo!
( Edit: Just for the sake of symmetry:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 9, rule = B3/S23
o2bobo2bo$4ob4o$4bo$4o2b3o$o3b2o3bo$b3o2b4o$5bo$b4ob4o$bo2bobo2bo!
)

See yujh's post. I think it's a 'rock eater 2'. I think the curly side is supposed to do something like this, separately from the eater2ish part:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
2o6b2o$bo7bo$bob2ob3o$2bobobo3$b3o$3bo$b2o$bo!
...but I never see the 'rock eater 2' do anything interesting, so it may be worth swapping out for the regenerative loop at the bottom of yujh's suggestions.

It doesn't seem to be completely functional as an eater 2, e.g. it can't eat gliders.

By the way, what do you think of my converters and partial converters? Am I finding good active regions to serve as inputs, or do you have better suggestions?

I've never seen those before, but I believe that there is potential.

Unrelated, but about those 17hd glider conduits, just use a highway robber, you only need a 1hd separation to pry apart gliders with a highway robber, instead of the 18hd separation needed for a Snark.

I think that the R−B shows more potential than the temporarily isolated patch that pops up in a Herschel that I used (in usefulness, number of converters and partials, and quality of converters/partials). Do you think that you can complete any of the partials?
Also, I might work on the bottom part of a loafer next.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

It indeed only looks like an eater2, but isn't. It does something else, which almost never comes up.

Your converters from unstudied objects to known ones are interesting, but the real question in conduit design is whether you can get those input objects form anywhere. This is why the investigation on H' sort of fizzled--it's nice to know about, but its real test of mettle is whether it will show up on outputs frequently. If you can find common-looking outputs from R, B, or H inputs, and had multiple ways of turning such a common output into other signals, we'd be getting somewhere indeed. So that's the target.

The object you're referring to as "R−B" automatically drops out of an R pentomino, so I do really like the idea of using it--particularly because I've seen a bunch of R-pentominos in searches that ended up pointing the wrong way to be useful conventionally. "R−B" may be useful to explore.

Regarding the 'bait' reactions that consume blocks but create useful outputs away from the bait, keep doing those. Bait restoration is difficult, but not impossible. Ideally, when consumed, the bait will create a smallish active region around it, won't be crowded out by other catalysts nearby, and will do its jobs as bait relatively quickly. Under those conditions, engineering a block restoration has the highest chance of success.

Thank you for the advice. I'm not sure what other active regions would likely be useful but have not been studied much. Do you have any suggestions?

The R−B to queen bee catalyst originally used a fishhook instead of a block.

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 20, rule = LifeHistory
2A$.A6.2D$.A.A3.D.D$2.2A2.D$6.D2.D$6.D$7.D.D$8.2D$17.A$13.3A$12.4A$11.2A$11.2A$12.2A3$9.2A$10.A$7.3A$7.A!
#C [[ T 64 PAUSE 1 ]]
However, I replaced the fishhook with a block because I figured that the queen bee would be practically useless if it crashed into the fishhook right away. Was this the correct decision?
I am tentatively considering myself back.
