I bet there are edgy-junk factories where the junk can be sparked into a forward-traveling glider by some known passing conduit -- maybe an F116? there are a couple of vaguely possible sparks there.

It's a little awkward that the sparked output glider in this converter has to cross so much active conduit to get to empty space where an output signal could be used. However, if you accept that limitation, this is an unusually nice toggle-switch circuit. A second Herschel cleanly deletes the boat output, and the test glider pass cleanly through if the boat isn't there:

If a compatible generator can be found to make this arrangement, or something equivalent:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 5, rule = LifeHistory
5.2A$5.A.A$5.A.A$2A4.A$2A!
...then we could have a stop-and-double-restart conduit:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 18, rule = LifeHistory
5.3B$4.6B$2.13B7.2B$2.14B5.4B$2.16B3.5B$.26B$29B$.8B2A19B$2.6BA2BA17B
$2.7B2A3BA12B$13BABA4B.5B$13BABA4B.4B$5.9BA3B4.2B$7.11B$8.4B3.2B$21.
3A$21.A$22.A!
This simple conduit leaves such a constellation, but the westbound Herschel ends up destroying the conduit, no matter what orientation the extra blinker is in:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
2.2A$.A.A$.A$2A5$5.3C7.2A$6.C8.A.A$6.3C8.A$17.2A!

In the absence of any project that desperately needs a stop-and-double-restart conduit, I'm thinking I won't spend a lot of time trying to salvage this one. Looks like there are a couple of blocks that would need cleaning up somehow, besides the blinker problem. It doesn't seem too likely that a B-to-X conduit could get hold of either of those initial B-heptomino outputs, because of the reaction envelope of the H-to-two-beehive reaction you're targeting.

We can make a stop-and-double-restart easily enough any time we need one, starting from any number of standard stop-and-restart mechanisms, and adding a syringe, H-to-2G, and two more syringes. The resulting circuit will be kind of big, maybe, but very easy to adjust.

Seems as if adjustability, and maybe Spartan-ness or constructibility, might be more important than bounding box size. If you wanted to do something with the two-beehive stop-and-double-restart, once the problem with extra junk blocks is solved, you'd have to connect each output to appropriate Herschel circuitry, to route the signals around to do... [whatever we need two synchronized signals for]. Extra Herschel circuitry can make a mechanism look much bigger and uglier, very quickly...!

These days, the smallest practical solution is often to convert each Herschel to a glider anyway -- then bounce them around with a few Snarks, and if necessary use syringes to turn the signals back into Herschels at the last possible moment.

A Herschel transmitter-dependent loafmaker.

It's pretty sparky, so one may make something out of it.

Maybe something cheaper could replace the pond-killing eater on the second one.
And the third one is the old-known Herschel receiver that accepts G2, G5, G6 glider pairs.

Scorbie's post in Useless Discoveries reminded me to check out a particular catalysis with Bellman, which led to this:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 23, rule = LifeHistory
15.2A$9.2A5.A$4.A4.A.A.3A$4.3A4.A.A$7.A2.B2A$2A4.2AB.3B$.A4.7B$.A.AB

8B2D$3.11B$A2.A.2A2.5B$4A.A$5.A.A$2.2A2.2A$2.A$3.A$2.2A!
If a further reaction consumes the red beehive and then generates the domino spark, the beehive regenerates. There's no simple G+beehive collision that does so, but I found something in my files that works:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 27, rule = LifeHistory
15.2A$9.2A5.A$4.A4.A.A.3A$4.3A4.A.A$7.A2.B2A$2A4.2AB.3B$.A4.7B$.A.AB

This particular staged-recovery thing would work as a G0->P, but I doubt that the Pi would fit with anything.

Yes, this is the block-laying switch engine.

Huh, pretty impressive if you found this by hand! The rarest object I found by hand was the eater (Astonished when I saw its peculiar shape of that still life.)

I did actually find a naturally occurring block-laying switch engine in a large QuadLife soup once, and an unstabilized SE in the exhaust from a puffer in an exotic 30-state rule similar to Life. However, the next-rarest object I have found accidentally is probably the pulsar, which probably has been "rediscovered" more times than any other pattern in the history of Life (judging from the abundance of topics on this forum with titles such as "Natural p3 oscillator -- is it known?"). This does not, of course, count symmetrical patterns such as this p2:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
4b2o$3bo2bo$3bob2o$b2o2bob2o$o5b2obo$ob2o5bo$b2obo2b2o$3b2obo$3bo2bo$
4b2o!
It's probably about the second-most rediscovered pattern, because it forms from inserting two live cells into a bakery:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
4b2o$3bo2bo$3bobo$b2obo3bo$o2b2o2bobo$obo2b2o2bo$bo3bob2o$4bobo$3bo2bo
$4b2o!
There's also a way to "fudge" it from a fleet, but it's harder to explain.
In all, finding a switch engine accidentally is by no means easy, but also by no means unheard of.

I can't figure out how to extract a signal, but there's a variety of glider-activated factories that can come of variants on this:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 37, rule = B3/S23
10b2o$5b2o2bobo$5bo3bo$6b3ob4o$8bobo2bo$4b3obobo$3bo2bob2o$3b2o2$3b2o$

9bo$8bobo$8bobo$9bo14b3o$24bo$25bo6$7b2o3b2o$8bo3bo$5b3o5b3o$5bo9bo!
This is one of few situations where the catalyst on the left cannot be replaced with a pair of fishhook eaters.

With a minimum repeat time of 46, this may yield a smaller color-changing SGR with a bounding box under 50x50 and repeat time under 50. (I think MikeP's prize still doesn't have a winner, right?)
Edit: And it would be the thinnest SGR...
@Kazyan You may have noticed this, but that was close...

New nonspartan G->block, though I'm not sure if it's redundant:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
5bo7b2o$5b3o5bobob2o$8bo6bobo2bo$7b2o5b2obob2o$14bo2bo$15bobo$16bo2$

The larger still life is usually just a substitute for an eater, but occasionally it works where a fishhook can't, such as here.

EDIT: Variant:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
5bo7b2o$5b3o5bobob2o$8bo6bobo2bo$7b2o5b2obob2o$14bo2bo$15bobo$16bo2$

It works when a thumb spark interacts with the catalyst directly after the fishhook-like action occurs.

This one is just an edgy H->boat, but its novelty amuses me, so it's getting posted:

X-to-blinker hasn't been mentioned before here, has it? Vaguely related, then: the H-to-blinker I know of with the best clearance for the blinker seems to be this one --

16.BDB$3.A17.D$3A$A!
-- which is really just an Fx77 with an eater missing, so it can also be a blinker-factory-in-passing. Comes in handy every now and then.

Maybe this is a good place to throw in the H-to-blinker "blinker-keeper" from 2005, which also has fairly decent clearance. An even-period signal puts a blinker back if it's not there, but doesn't care if it is there:

Code: Select all

#C p496 "blinker keeper" oscillator maintains an accessible blinker
#C toward its right edge, deleting and recreating if necessary

Then David Bell found a way to combine two copies, in a way that doesn't actually use the "keeper" function, to make medium-to-high-period guns. I doubt Snarks and bumpers can cut the speed down enough to get a gun below p1000, though:

The G-to-blinker can also convert a boat to a toad, but I'm trying hard to resist the impulse to post a pattern. Like the block and the longboat, it doesn't look like it could ever be used for anything, as far as this "factory" thread goes -- too many catalysts surrounding the output. EDIT: Thanks to Extrementhusiast's unwarranted optimism below, here's the boat->toad reaction, which probably really belongs in some synthesis thread or other, except it looks too expensive to be worth anything:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 28, rule = LifeHistory
11.2A$5.A.2A.A.A$5.2A.A.A9.A$9.2A8.A.A$19.2A3$24.2A$23.A2.A$24.2A2$

$10.2C4$14.2A$10.2A2.2A$9.A.A$9.A$8.2A!
Anyway, the G-to-blinker is another really nice near-miss. It's kind of surprising that it's been so hard to find a way to get another clean simple signal out from a glider-input conduit, since the Snark and the syringe. I'm still really hoping for a nice color-changing and/or Spartan G-to-G, G-to-H, or (especially?) G-to-2G.

That doesn't seem to mean I'm spending much time running these kinds of searches again myself, though. Maybe one of these years.
