The U is almost entirely surrounded by the catalysts you've placed. With that block immediately to the north, it just doesn't seem like there's any plausible way for a U signal to sneak in from anywhere else.

So it seems to me that this amounts to a "Garden of Eden" type converter, where it doesn't really matter what the starting signal is because there's no hope of really using it as a conduit.

Not to be a wet blanket, but it seems like it would be good to reserve this thread for conduits that have some hope of connecting to other conduits.

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly sure that known X-to-LOM and LOM-to-X technology is mostly all documented in this thread -- and there isn't very much of it at all, high-clearance or not. It's generally not. There seems to be a group of LOM-related converters starting in this post and several below it.

You can engineer a LOM injector that's as high-clearance as you want (depending on where exactly the clearance has to be) -- starting from either the 2-glider collision if that works, or something more complicated with three or four gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 37, y = 34, rule = LifeHistory

Looks like that makes a new Rx113 conduit, easily inside the arbitrary limits for these things -- travel time no more than 300, size no more than 100x100, repeat time no more than 500. Oddly enough, I think this might now be the fastest Rx Herschel conduit that we know about -- Rx is an unusual output orientation for some reason.

You can't really shrink it _quite_ as far as the third pattern, because then you can't get the input Herschel in. In practice the repeat time seems to be 198 or above, though I haven't tried all the weird input Herschel delivery methods, just a standard Fx77:

EDIT: Actually the minimum is 170 ticks, as AlbertArmstain and Entity Valkyrie point out below.

HL224H, with glider outputs. This is basically a crosspost from the H-to-G thread after I noticed that an eater was suppressing a perfectly good no-strings-attached H output:

Wow, there are still old-style Spartan Herschel conduits out there to be found with just four catalysts?

This one looks like it ought to make a nice delay component, since the signal stays in a fairly compact area for a couple hundred ticks. Maybe not quite compact enough to improve any higher-period guns, since it doesn't connect directly to a syringe -- but that's really just the gun collection's fault for being so optimized already.

you can get another glider, but it passes right through the output herschel area

Nice find! Did you have any particular connectors in mind, for that "high-clearance" description, that weren't workable with existing variants of RF48H? I was hoping that it could connect to a Herschel receiver, but that's obviously not what it's supposed to be for.

It can certainly connect to HLx111R, with two advantages: the repeat time goes down by 33 ticks, and the output Herschel's glider can escape. That will have to come in handy somewhere sometime:

How are conduits named? Specifically the numbers and variants. I know about the letters that go at the front, but what about the numbers, and which would be the "first" variant? For example, what would these R to H conduits be?

The bottom R-to-H is a combination of two standard elementary conduits. If it were an elementary conduit it would be "RFx87H", I believe. The number is just the number of ticks it takes for an X-to-Y conduit to convert its input X into its output Y. Section 7.7 of the Life textbook has some more detail.

Code: Select all

x = 84, y = 32, rule = LifeHistory

The top R-to-H differs only in the first RF28B conduit. There are nine or ten variants of that catalogued in the Elementary Conduits Collection, so if this new one turns out to fit somewhere where existing variants don't, such that it's worth adding to the ECC, then it would end up being RF28Bj or RF28Bk (I think).

There's no official ratifying vote or anything; whoever decides to do the next round of maintenance on the ECC will give it a lowercase letter postfix identifier if they decide to add it to the collection. It will be a lot more likely to be added if it can be shown to make a useful connection in a way that the other variants don't. The block at the bottom looks like it will prevent connections to a lot of standard H-to-R conduits -- not to the incredible HLx111R, but the clearance is so good for that output R that the standard RF28B usually works fine anyway.

I was hoping that it could connect to a Herschel receiver, but that's obviously not what it's supposed to be for.

P to G...
edit: a variation...
If I keep complaining about this kind of thing, I will eventually be proved spectacularly wrong, and that will be very entertaining -- but this looks to be in the same category as the "Garden of Eden" converter at the top of the page:

The U is almost entirely surrounded by the catalysts you've placed... Not to be a wet blanket, but it seems like it would be good to reserve this thread for conduits that have some hope of connecting to other conduits.
I'm sure it's not impossible to sneak a pi-heptomino in past that guardian loaf, but I'm also pretty sure that it's not a trick that can be accomplished by any known X-to-pi conduit, or by anything that's easy to engineer in under say 100x100.

It seems to me that when you're looking for new converters with pi inputs, it would be a really good idea for you to always start your searches from some known small X-to-pi conduit. You won't find as many "new" things that way, but what you do find will be a lot more likely to be useful for the Elementary Conduits Collection.
