Completely unrelated, but I'm wondering whether either this thread should be renamed to something like "Catalyst Discussion Thread" or if a new thread should be created for the kind of discussion that's been happening on this thread, which doesn't seem too related to the original subject of generating hard numerical data on how commonly various catalysts are applicable, or if it's fine to keep using this thread for investigating new catalysts more generally without doing anything like that. Does anyone else have thoughts about that?
I think that the recent work on catalyst replacement guides does count as doing catalyst tests in a sense. For example, something that I noticed about Entity Valkyrie's replacement guides is that the examples sometimes have extra cells, particularly in sparks. Here is an example from Entity Valkyrie's version of the catalyst replacement guide:
Code: Select all
x = 41, y = 69, rule = EV2QuadColor

Here is the corresponding example from my version of the catalyst replacement guide:

Figuring out what cells are necessary is a catalyst test in a sense because it tests whether the replacement catalyst still works if the region is modified so that the cell in question is off instead of on. Another example is that modifying one of the example regions for the tub yesterday is how I figured out that whether a tub should be replaced with a boat and fishhook or a tubified fishhook bridge fishhook depends on the presence of a cell in a position that would make the tub a beehive grandparent if the tub were intact.
On the other hand, I expect that there would be enough posts about replacement catalysts and catalyst replacement guides to merit their own post if moderators deem them to be off-topic here. There already have been at least a dozen posts about that topic, and are several things that I would like to discuss with Entity Valkyrie, such as the extra cells mentioned earlier, that would result in more posts on the matter in the near future.
I am tentatively considering myself back.
